A - I don't know if this beer was agitated much before purchasing but it poured with a massive head. I'm thinking two to three fingers. Very slow dissipation. My suspicions were confirmed with a flashlight; its color is totally opaque. For me, that's a little out of the ordinary for a porter as I'm used to a little bit of tan see through. Interesting.

S - Big chocolate, big roast. Smelled of a well-known imperial that I pretty much adore. Not exactly like it but very close. I'm liking this so far.

T - I was thinking much, much thicker. I was expecting imperial or at least stoutish. No buddy. This tastes of porter all the way. Kinda strange because my expectations went from porter, to stout, then back to porter. This is a confusing beer. Towards the back I'm saying milk stout. A bit. For sure.

M - Totally porter. Totally. No oil slick here. No syrup or lingering malt. For a beer this dark, it's kinda magical actually.

D - One and done. It may be a porter but I couldn't sesh this here beer. It's kinda like a little treat for me. It may be light but I'm thinking dessert beer all the way.

Let's look at a local brew today. Interesting looking label artwork on this bottle. It tastes like a porter with adjuncts, but surprisingly it does not have any. I have a fresh 1 month & 1 week old bottle by the way. I am getting slight cocoa, slight coffee, burnt malts. This is one of the best porters I ever had. The first time I had this beer it was better than 2nd time which tells me this brewery has a problem with consistency. They are going to lose a few points for that. This beer has the potential to be even better than what it already is. Cheers! B

12 oz bottle into a snifter.
Pours very dark red-brown with a minimal head that somehow manages to have good retention.

Aroma: dark roasted malts with hints of toffee, burnt sugar, and dak dried fruits.

Flavor: Lingering flavor of dark roasted grains with hints of dark chocolate and coffee.

Feel: medium-light body; smooth; medium-light carbonation.

O: a well-crafted, mainstream porter.

Black as coal with brown tiny bubbles. I smell a rich toffee aroma. I detect hints of coffee, chocolate, and caramel with a bitter aftertaste. The mouth feel seems a little lighter than I expected with no alcohol warmth. Overall a very pleasant beer.

Coppertail Brewing "Night Swim" Porter
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More #901, Tampa, FL

It must have been a cloud-covered moon-less night for swimming, because Coppertail's "Night Swim" is about as dark as you can get, remaining a completely opaque black-brown even when held to direct light. Its creamy dark tan head drops readily but maintains a solid surface covering, initially leaving behind beautiful sheets of solid lace marked by a thin ring with each sip taken.

Dark chocolate, red fruit, and gently roasty notes greet you in the nose.

In the mouth it's fairly light in body, not ever reaching "medium" in girth; but it's creamy and smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation that accentuates the maltiness and helps to avoid the dark malt acidity and carbonic acid bite that some porters have.

The fruitiness found in the aroma returns in the flavor and remains as a fairly prominent component, harkening back to its English origins (regardless of whether it's coming from yeast or hops); and in combination with the lighter body it certainly remains on that side of the pond as opposed to being "American" in nature. Dark chocolate, caramel, toast, and a bit of nuttiness and mild roastiness round it out with only minimal hops remaining in the background (again following in the English style). It's gently bitter, allowing what acidity the dark malts bring to the table to bring it to a gently drying finish.

Apart from being remarkably drinkable, it's also an interesting beer. The strength (if it is indeed 6.2%) suggests a robust porter, but the color and body suggest an Irish-style stout; and flavor-wise it falls somewhere in between.

Pours a thick dark brown with a nice khaki malted milk head. Nose is creamed coffee and milk chocolate. Mouth feel i is medium bodies with nice carbonation and a good balance.

Flavor profile is a nice chocolate roasted grain character that is over shadowed with a pine hoppy bitter. This is one time when the hop character really detracts from a beer that would otherwise be real nice.

Finish continues with a long bitter hop character that is just not a great juxtaposition with the otherwise nice porter tones.

Draft. More of an English porter and quite drinkable.
