Sampling a 2014 release cellar temp bottle poured into a snifter. The bottle was picked up for me at the brewery by my friend Ellie. Thank you!
The beer looks great, pours a deep mahogany color with some rich ruby highlights and some fluffy offwhite head foams up about 1 cm before fading to a sturdy edge layer and one large wispy island.
Aroma is all malt, with biscuit notes and some caramel mixing with plum and a bit of red grape. There is also maybe a bit of brown sugar sweetness.
First sip reveals a fairly thick body and gentle rolling carbonation. Texture is a little sticky and coats my palate.
Flavor is again all malt just like the nose with toffee and biscuit mixing with some brown sugar and some fruity qualities of red grape and plum. Again no real hop character on this beer.
The 9% is also very well hidden and I dont get any heat or peppery flavors. A solid english style barleywine that seems to be sneaky on the booze and absent of hops. As a malty, I approve.
Glad I have a 2nd bottle!

A somewhat hazy copper colored brew with a decent off-white head that dissipates pretty quickly to a uniform pencil thin ring. Lacing is fair as it cascades into spotty pieces. The aroma most immediately delivers a pervasive pear and brown bread blend. Flowery, sweet, pleasant and fairly unique as barleywines go. The flavor brings more pear with an alcohol edge and some grassy notes. Perhaps there's also some hint of cherry and raspberry. Quite sweet and a bit sweeter than I typically like in a barleywine but overall it's a solid offering. The body is pretty close to full with a very fine veil of carbonation and a slick feel. I like it but don't want to over indulge here.
