12 oz. bottle poured into a stemmed Libbey glass.

Appearance: Pours a very dark brown with a two-finger chestnut head. Nice looking beer.

Aroma: Caramel, citrus, hops, toast.

Taste: Follows the nose, along with some extra brown bread type flavor. Tasty. Nice combo of flavors. Sort of like a flavorful brown ale, a porter and an IPA.

Mouthfeel: Sturdy. Easy on the palate for a high IBU beer.

Overall: Really good fall weather beer. Not cheap at $15 a six pack, but I'd say worth it. Reminiscent of Dogfish Head's Indian Brown.

A little disappointing. Not really a brown ale because there is just too much hop, not enough brown maltiness and the dextrose that makes a brown ale, well a brown ale. I just can't get beyond the hoppy forward character. I was hoping for more of a balance of a traditional brown ale. Not bad, certainly drinkable, just didn't meet expectations.

Bottle from the Drinkery Derry
Rich chocolate and caramel maltiness with plenty of earthy citrus hops to cut through it. Decent enough, but still a brown ale.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on January 24, 2016.

Brown color through and through with a tremendous tan head that lingers and laces.

Nice multi-faceted aroma of mild roasted chocolate malts, citrus, earth, floral, and spice hops. All subtle but mingling together nicely.

Smooth medium body.

Roasted malt character at first and the citrus and herbal bitterness rolls in at the finish. Not nutty like some other Browns but it had a nice character to it.

A- 12oz bottle cascades into a tulip glass revealing a very dark brown brew that could be mistaken for black in a dim setting. Light tan, thick foamy head rises up several fingers high with great retention never truly dying fully. Large pillow/ring leaves thick sheets of lace at the end of each sip.

S- Very much a Brown Ale as the malts shine through with a variety of notes from toast, toffee and nuttiness to chocolate and caramel. The hops are immediately apparent with moderate floral and citrus hints.

T- The hops are still plenty noticeable but they seem to lose some steam here as the malts bring out more sweetness and caramelized sugar tones at this juncture. Toffee, toasted nuts, chocolate, slight roast barley, breadiness and a touch of raisin dark fruit hints. The finish brings earthy and a touch of orange citrus from the hops.

MF- Fluffy and mostly foamy texturally with a tiny bit of creaminess. Seems a bit thin for the flavors presented and some chewiness would go a long way. High end carbonation and a slight hint of bitterness in the ending.

A solid brown ale base that allows for a smooth meeting between hops and rich malts to come together. The body comes off a bit thin for me but overall this one is worth trying.

Hidden Cove has been one of my favorite newer NE breweries since I first had Manhattan on tap a year and a half (or so) ago. Their approach to barrel-aging and their focus on wild ales and Brett beer in general have held my interest since I had first heard of them. This is their newest six-pack offering, however (their third after Castoff, a session IPA and Patroon, a great flagship IPA), and it's a normal-strength hoppy brown.

Bucko's tumbles out of the bottle a very deep brown with a light-mocha head that rises intensely to the top of my glass with even the slightest pour. Lots of fancy lace show as it dissipates and quite a bit as it drinks as well. Nose is dry, bready malts and pine-y hops with a helping of earthiness as well. On the tongue it pops with every sip; huge toasted brown bread and bright, pungent hoppiness. Slightly prickly carbonation that turns a bit more rounded as the beer warms. Getting a bit of chocolate fudge and caramel as well. Grapefruit and pine notes from the hops are the most evident flavors on the palate aside from the dark, roasty maltiness, though the finish is a bit dirty/"crunchy" and earthy, as noted in the nose before. This is quite good stuff. Excited to sip on the rest of the six pack!

Poured into a 13 oz Weyerbacher tulip glass not sure when it was bottled. Pours a beautiful mahogany with a two inch sticky white head that leaves behind plenty of life.

Smell is caramel, toffee, pine, biscuit, brown sugar, and a little grapefruit rind.

Taste follows some pine upfront, toffee, caramel, biscuit, brown sugar, and a little grapefruit lingers on the tongue awhile after each sip.

Mouthfeel is medium, plenty of carbonation, maybe a smidgen dry, and very drinkable.

Overall this is very nice, not as good as Smuttynose Durty but very nice.

Looks like a porter. Tastes fruity and almost charred. Different, not sure I'd buy it again tho.
