Still one month to the Winter solstice, but it's time for a winter beer.
Winterkoninkske pours a nice dark brown with full head, great look.
Smell is a standard for the style, but mouthfeel is great, so smooth and silky, round and warming.
Taste is sweet up front, sugary, not too hoppy neither too bitter in the aftertaste, just good.
A great beer, even without that bit that make it a masterpiece.
I don't understand the rate under 4 here at BA, because it's so pleasant and very enjoyable.
Tonight I made a contest of Belgian strong dark ale with Chimay blue, both 2015, and Winterkoninkske is truly the winner.

Curious that I first found this brewery only 12 months ago when I started in earnest to check-off the brews in MJ's "Great Beers of Belgium." Hard to find these beers, but this one was worth the experience (and the calories.)
For it is sweet, even for the style. But delicious on a winter night.

MJ said "Winterkoninkske offers rich, dark flavours like treacle-toffee flavoured with mint." I missed the mint, but will look for it next time.

On tap at Engine 15 (JAX).
Very dark reddish-brown body that is topped by a weak head.

Nice aroma that says "Belgian yeast".

Flavor: too sweet up front and. less so, overall. Dark fruits, faint chocolate and spices.

The body is slick, smooth, medium-full but seems a bit under-carbonated.

On-tap at Mugs Alehouse, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is black when viewed from afar and very dark brown when held up and inspected closely. It poured with a thin beige head that died down, leaving a collar of bubbles on the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark fruits are present in the nose—plums seem to stand out in particular—along with hints of candi sugar.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste has flavors of plums, clumpy yeast, and malty sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and slightly smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has bold flavors of dark fruits and last clumps. The taste also doesn't seem to be that alcoholic.

Look: Pitch black/brown with zero foam. Appears very flat.

Smell: Faint smell of juniper, coffee, and molasses.

Taste/Feel: Clean mouthfeel that flattens quickly. I don't get a whole lot of juniper but definitely some coffee. Bitter up front.

Overall: A bit disappointed.

Dark brown with an amber tinge. Slightly transparent but too cloudy to see through. A head of 4 fingers, beige and somewhat rusty, fades fast.

I got a caramel sort of butterscotch sent on the first sniff, but more cherry and dark fruits afterward. Vanilla, plums, figs, enjoyment.

Cherry, vanilla and figs initially, some tar like qualities, a hint of metallic, candy apple. Toast on the end.

Thick, lightly syrupy body, little carbonation.

Not a bad brew indeed. Perhaps my first by “Bink.” Found and drank in Kunming, May 4th, 2015. The style starts to taste the same after a while in my opinion, but this one holds up as RC cola to Coke- RC being this brew and Coke Chimay Blue.

Poured a deep, translucent dark brown with red highlights when held to light and a thin ring of tan bubbles at the edge of the glass. Overall impression of appearance is of a good looking Strong Dark body, but a bit lacking in the head. Scents of dark fruit, with notes of raisin, dried cherry, fig and light banana mingling with rich malty aromas of caramel, lightly toasted bread and bready malt, light chocolate sits in the background and there is a moderate warming alcohol presence. Overall impression of aroma is of a true to style, well done Belgian Strong Dark. Not the most standout example of the style, but quite appealing. Flavor begins sweet with strong notes of dark fruit, with notes of raisin, black cherry and prune, balanced by a lovely malt presence with notes of caramel, sweet bready malt and light esters of a banana character. Middle opens up further bready malt and caramel with a light warming alcohol present, some vinous flavors, a touch of chocolate and light toast and dark fruit, mostly raisin. Finish is sweet with notes of bready malt, light toast, hints of roast malt, dark fruit, again mostly raisin but with some dried cherry, medium-light chocolate notes and moderate warming alcohol. Aftertaste begins with lightly warming alcohol and sweet malt and shifts into lightly roasted malt and dark chocolate. Overall impression of flavor is of a very nice Belgian Strong Dark that is balanced between fruity esters and malt quite nicely. A good take on the style. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with high carbonation but not "bite" and a smooth, warming feel and finish. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a classic Belgian Strong Dark, no complaints. Overall this is a fine Belgian Strong Dark. It has the classic aroma and flavor of the style, aided by a wonderful mouthfeel. It's not the finest example of the style, but it is a good rendition. My only complaint is the juniper berries used in brewing are not present at all, at any level. The result is that it is a good, but not great, Belgian Strong Dark.

Yeasty fruit nose with traces of dark sugar and chocolate. Pours deep dark brown under a 1” tan tinted lacy head. The palate isbrown sugar and dark dried fruit . It is very creamy, full bodied with above average carbonation. It is a very pleasant drink but it needs a little something extra to stand out.
