Very Good
Notes: Helles (HELL-us) or “light”, the classic beer of Munich has traditionally been one of the most popular beer styles in Bavaria. Prepared under the guidelines of the Reinheitsgebot (the German Beer Purity Law of 1516) with German malt and hops, South End Lager is a gentle, delicate malt-accentuated blond lager, with a refreshing crispness and a pleasing noble hop finish. a solid and refreshing classically styled glass of helles lager, clear yellow and bright, upbeat carbonation, and authentic german flavors from all three elements, but with the light honey note in the malt and the old worldy german lager yeast character jumping out well in front of the noble hop profile this finishes with. there is a little sweetness to this, not as dry as some, but i really dont mind that, it lets me taste the fresh malt a little longer than i usually do in the style, and its so clean in other respects that the little bit of leftover sugar doesnt matter. light spice and grass to the hops, low bitterness though, even for a low bitterness style. lager yeast is biscuity to me, flakey and rustic, yet clean in its fermentation. overall a really drinkable pale beer that i have to imagine has enormously wide appeal, even for macro lager drinkers. refreshing for summer time but flavorful enough for all year. i thought the beers in here were really solid from a technical standpoint too. not the best helles in the world, but a fine example of the style!

22 oz. Bomber

A clear, pale yellow-gold color, plenty of life with an opening foam cap of pure white, drops pretty fast with only a trace of white lace left over.

A very nice aroma of light, bready malt, funky sour yeast, very herbal/spicy hop, dry wheat and cream of corn.

A very well balanced helles, big bready malt, a very nice malt flavor for sure. The balance comes from the very herbacious hops and excellent earthy - sour lager yeast. Light, crisp, jazzy and full of classic lager flavor's. This one feels very authentic. I always think corn and wheat for subtle but effective flavors on the side. This is a brew you can spend all day with.

The beer halls of Munich right here in VT.

On draught, excellent Helles lager: nice pour with decent, not overwhelming white head. Decent sticky lace but not syrupy. Nice slight hoppy nose but not too hoppy in taste: toasty grain malt flavor and decent bright crispy smack to it. Addictive

It really makes me want pretzels when i drink this beer; it makes my mouth water, well, like the salt from a pretzel...hell, these make me want pretzels. It's a paradox of taste and feel: sweet malt richness, but crisp and light. And to a fault, rivals a pils in color (pale straw) and body (bubbling lightness). Regardless it's a great bridge between the straight-laced, spice accentuated crispness of a pils and the more contemplative malt foundation of a Vienna lager.

I had this on tap at Parish II in Boston.

Served in a standard pint, the beer is gold with a slight chill haze. It has a clingy white head and lace.

It has a nose of crackers and a hint of floral hops.

The taste is balanced between the semi-sweet malts and light hoping. It is a touch grainy with a bit of spice and more floral notes.

The mouth is medium and soft. I wouldn't mind if they dialed up the carbonation a notch.

This is an easy one to pair with food.

On-tap 3/16/2016 at Flynn’s in Mansfield, MA, served in a tapered pint glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains light caramelized malts, lager yeast and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a malt sweetness followed quickly by bready flavors of lager yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is strong for the style and provides a good balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, light-to-medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while.

Tap at tavern on the square Northboro.

Nice foamy head, clear golden pale color.

Nose light, little straw pilsner, cracked grains, hint lager crisp fruity, faint grassy hop.

Taste starts more toasty grainy malts, little straw hay doughy, toasty lager malts, mild fruity lager hint minerality, very mild grassy hops. Finish little more grassy hop bitterness, little sticky, not very crisp.

Mouth is med to lighter bod, decent carb, not very crisp.

I tried this beer at the brewery. It poured a clear golden with thin white head that left some lace. The scent had faint grain notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with subtle grain and earth presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall its a good beer.
