Appearance: Pours a pale, mostly clear gold into a goblet. One-finger head doesn't linger long. After re-reading my review, I suppose the pale color and quickly disappearing head are part of the theme.

Smell: Sweet flavors are immediately apparent as soon as the cork comes out. Dried fruit leads, with a bit of bubblegum.

Taste: The fruit in the nose comes through very strong in the mouth. There's also pepper and a smallish hop backbone that tries to keep things balanced, but it's mostly in vain. It's ok, although there's nothing particularly innovative going on here, and I've had better examples of the style.

Mouthfeel: About right - not terribly zippy. More carbonation might improve it, but might not.

Drinkability: Decent, but it wouldn't be my first choice for this style if I had other choices. On the bright side, the ABV is pretty well hidden. You wouldn't want to drink these all night, I think, but there's certainly no problem in carefully sipping a few.

Malty, enjoyable bottle at Coles rare beer fest. Some thickness, character although not as spicey as I would exect for the style as a triple, as a pale blond yes. Nice yeasty head.Drying finish. Some aroma, sugar and yeast, clove.I am OK with this brewery, hard to find thes bottles.

A - A large fluffy pillow like pure white head... Foam clings to the sides of the glass as the head fades... Stellar retention that leads to a full creamy lacing... A pale orange honey color... Slightly hazy... Cyclone of rapid carbonation rises in the center... Faint traces of dark sediment fall to the bottom of the glass...

S - White raisins... Lemon zest... Pear... Apple... Yeast... A faint spiciness, namely in the form of coriander...

T - Sweet maltiness takes the form of butterscotch and light caramel... Hints of honey... Bosc pear... Banana... Apricot... Candied dried fruits...

M - Medium bodied... Creamy and rich... Smooth and lush... Highly refreshing...

D - A wonderful Belgian experience... Whether a Tripel or a Strong Pale Ale, it's a worthy brew... Hides the 9% ABV rather well... In my opinion, this is criminally underrated based on the reviewed I've read...

A: Cork opens with a pop and soon starts overflowing. Pours golden brown with a huge frothy white head.

S: Nice aromas of spice, banana, honey. A very classic smelling Belgian strong ale.

T/M: Disappointing. Lacks the depth and intensity you'd expect from the style (and alcohol). Fairly thin tasting of spice and and honey.

D: Drinkable in the sense that there's not a whole lot of complexity and it goes down smoothly. But that said, it's not a beer I'd reach for right away

750 ml bottle purchased at LaBodega (along with the Brune, for later tasting) in Riverside, CA. for $8.99 in Spetember 2006.

Pours a clear, fairly light golden color with moderate carbonation and a very nice head of tiny white bubbles that sticks aroound through the pour.

Aroma is decent- sweet malt and slightly spicy. No alcohol or hops noted.

Flavor is nice, predominantly sweet honey, orange blosssoms and just a tinge of white pepper. Alcohol is totally hidden (is this really 9%?).

This is an easy drinker, but I have a couple of questions- 1) is it really 9%? Seems too high. and 2) is this really a tripel? Seems more like a good Belgian Strong Pale Ale than a tripel. IMHO, it's a good Blonde or an average Tripel- take your pick.
Mouthfeel is a little thin for the style.

Gold opaque. Nose smelling the hops and alcohol. Mouth easily, without great folly, in the style tripel of medium quality. That is to say, strong alcohol in the mouth, a little bitterness in the aftertaste and we revert to the fruit flavors and floral hops usually present in this type of beer.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter. Cork reads #144302 (best before 3/10/07 stamped on bottle).
A: Very nice orangish yellow color with slight cloud. Excellent 2 inch thick billowy white head that lasts forever. Excellent lacing.
S: Pear, lemon, and lighter citrus notes. Mostly pear though.
T: A bit weak here. Honestly very minimal taste...did this beer suffer going past the Oct. 3, 2007 date? I would be surprised if it did, so perhaps this is it. Light pear and citrus notes. Not as much as you would like from a belgian beer.
M: Light body, doesn't linger much.
D: A nice looking beer, but the taste is only average. I would not drink this one alone...pair it with some stronger food. It's a decent thirst quencher and the ABV is well hidden.

Appears a semi-transparent light gold with a small white head that fades into a mild cap. Spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of tropical fruit salad, caramel, citrus, spice, and lightly grassy.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a light bubble gum flavor coming through in the flavors.
Mouthfeel is fizzy, semi-sweet, and spicy with bubble gum lasting to the semi-dry finish.

Purchased from a discount grocery store for 3.99. The beer pours a golden straw topped with a pillowy white head. Smells sweet, and bubblegum-yeasty.
Fairly high level of carbonation. Tastes, by and large, of a typical Triple. A little bit too sweet, which I think overpowers other potential flavors. Not a bad beer all told.

It pours a honeyish color with a fizzy white head that leaves no lacing.

The smell is nice, lots of orange and citrus.

The flavor is a bit weaker. It is a dry tripel with some orange notes and light malt. It is a bit water flavored.

A decent tripel.

Thanks to Greg for sharing a bottle of this beer.

A: The pour is a nice golden color with perhaps a touch of haze to it and a fluffy white head.

S: This one starts off with a sweet bready malt nose and some candi sugar. Lots of yeast esters give this a sweet citrus, tropical fruits, lemon zest, and pears. Some mild spice notes are present as well.

T: A nice mix of yeast flavors along with a strong citrus component. Lemon zest, sweet oranges, and perhaps even tangerine. Pretty nice bread and malt character, with just a touch of bitterness to it. Again, a touch of spice ester flavor.

M: The body is medium with a nice lively carbonation that is typical of Belgian beers.

D: You never quite know what you're going to get with these "random" Belgian beers, but I really quite liked this one.

BB 14-06-06. Good presentation with opalizing but quiet clear beer and nice and lasting white head. Nose is heavy malted and alcohollic with a light strange and soapy note. Sharp overal but after getting used to it( or is it evaporated) more flowery; jasmin like. Taste is full and good having good malty body, strong taste overal, litle candy and good and clean bitterness. Yes this is enjoyable and with good carbonisation giving a good and harmonic mouthfeel. Yes this is a good beer IMO well worth a try IMO.

750ML corked and caged. Best before march of '07, 9%abv. High level of clarity and a very light yellow hue. Carbonation is hearty and sticks to the sides of the glass slowly rolling up the edges. Loose white head that leaves crispy leftovers.

Cooked veggie's are up front in the smell and flavor. Slightly metallic. Light fruitiness enters the program and very subtle all things considered. Wet cardboard makes an appearance before being outdone by the spicy finish.

Notes: Dissapointing. I saw this for the first time and they had all three of their offerings for around $8-9 a bottle. I bought one of each so I hope this is a blip on the radar.

Presentation: 750ml brown glass bottle sealed, corked with a black single strapped wire cage. The thumbed cork has a No. 144302 on it. Main and neck labels are gold edged with a dark orange background; the main obverse label has a picture of the partially ruined Abbaye d’Aulne which sits next to the newly installed Brewery. Described as “Abbaye d’Aulne Triple Blonde”, a 'Special Blonde Ale'. Listed at 9% Alc./Vol. and recommended to be served slowly at 46° – 50° F. Best Before End 03/10/07 D 08:57.

Appearance: The cork was firmly removed and allowed a gentle gun smoke to fill the air as I slowly poured this one into a Chimay Goblet. A bleached white head forms quickly but is firm and controlled and never takes over, resting with some aplomb in the top ½” of the glass. Soft golden body is filled with feisty streamers. Gentle peach and grapefruit flashes when backlit add a soft tone to the appearance. The looks are traditionally rewarding but sadly the head tends to fight for its existence, though it never rescinds completely and always puts up a covering of fine bubbles that keep the cap at ⅛” thick. Lacing is low-key but very nice.

Nose: So-so in its cross-section but disappointing in it projection. It failed to match the looks. Sweet malts, light biscuit, hay and some earthy spices but they are average at best. Takes a little digging and some deep inhalation to get to the best of this one.

Taste: Light spices, earthy hints, hay and straw foibles with a middling malt feel. Blindfolded this one could well be one of the many, many middle of the road ubiquitous Belgian Blondes that fill the Bars. It manages to stick is head above the parapet and differentiates itself from the other Blondes with its clean profile but it isn’t all that great.

Mouthfeel: “Where is the 9%?” my first thought, and my last. In between that dilemma, I found this to be a very easy going strong Blonde Ale that is clean but rather inoffensive throughout. The carbonation is carpet soft and produces a nice velvet texture which is backed by a gentle metallic aspect. Still doesn’t seem like a 9% offering though.

Drinkability: The lower aromas, flavors and Mouthfeel can sometimes have an unexpected side effect. Good Drinkability but seemingly for all the wrong reasons. Long term it has a Jupiler Pils feel to it, gassy and metallic the attrition of the blandness is pervasive.

Overall: The Abbaye d’Aulne beers were once brewed by Affligem, but since 2001 they have been utilizing their own Brewery and they do not contain any chemical additives (least so they say). I still wonder if the bottled brews that head overseas are even still brewed and bottled by Affligem, I would not be surprised, this Abbaye d’Aulne Tripel Blonde holds many parallels to the De Smedt portfolio. The final pour into the Goblet produced no detritus whatsoever, this sample does not appear to be bottle-conditioned as previous examples that I have tried in Belgium were. Whilst this is a nice offering from Wallonia, it tends to feel laid back, doesn’t project the 9% ABV and it lacks the punchy bitterness that the better Triples have. There is nothing detracting here, it is just that for a $9 750ml it misses the bar by a fair way and tends to drop low on aroma, flavors and Mouthfeel. More of a “Strong Blonde” than a Triple, and I am not sure it is really worth the money. OK, but given the cost and the cold light of day, the harsher critique gives this one a thumbs down overall.

Been hanging onto this for a fey years. Picked it up in a trade from buckeyesox. After his passing I found I didnt have the heart to drink it.
After having it for years, I just now noticed somone went over the best before ate with a marker. I managed to remove the marker ink and see it says best before 3/10/07. Properly cellared, should be just fine.

Poured from the corked and caged 750 producing a clear pale straw color. Last pour brought some haze, but first pour was great.
Producing a bit over an inch of creamy white froth. Receding to leave asolid creamy cap of retention. Resembling a nitro pour head. Lace is thick leaving full coverage, also resembling a nitro pour.
Aroma is dry with hay, cereal grains, pils malt, lemon zest, touch of bready funk.

Taste is a bit strange, very juice like, bordering unfermented apple juice, sweet, but still tasty. Breadyness, tart, but overly wet and too much unfermented fruit flavors.
Mouthfeel provides terrific smooth velvety texture.

Wife brought this home from a discount wine/beer grocery shop, where she picked it up for $3.99. They had a two others bottles from Abbaye D'Aulne at the same price, she went with the highest alcohol option. surprise!

750 ml bottle poured into large Duvel tulip glass.

a - pale golden color, slightly cloudy with thick two finger head, dissipating after a minute or two, leaving some light lacing

s - inviting, slightly yeasty nose with lemony/citrus notes

t - the taste matches right up with the expectations from the nose - nice yeasty, slightly piquant taste, initial lemony notes really jump out in mid palate. pleasant lingering finish, a little doughy, the citrus still dancing a bit on the edges of my tongue

m - fair mouth feel, not too thin, a little lighter than what I would expect from a triple

d - very drinkable, the higher alcohol doesn't seem to show up at all. I let the wife have a few sips before I was forced to finish the bottle across a few more glasses. And that's when I found the alcohol...

Great beer for the price. I'd be disappointed if I paid $10-15 for the bottle.

The aroma has a touch of grassy, light struck character as I pour this brew into my tulip glass. It is topped by a frothy, predominantly large bubbled, yet lacy patterned, initially three-finger thick, off white colored head. The beer itself is a brilliantly clear, rich gold color. Aromatic notes of bergamot, toffee, brown sugar, and even a slight butterscotch note join the already notices grassy character. The aroma is actually quite intriguing so far, perhaps some of the notes are a bit off putting (I don't quite know what to make of the grassy light struck notes and the butterscotch), but it is interesting none-the-less.

Soft, with a chewy palate coating character that feels like the flavor of vanilla cream, yet without the actual flavor. Yet there is a soft vanilla note here that seems to be malt derived; it is wrapped up in a hint of butterscotch flavor, both of which are just perceptible. The overall theme of the flavors here are pale malt notes that lean towards grainy grass notes that are only accentuated by a hay-like, lightly herbal hop character. The finish is purely fermentation derived with spicy notes of ginger, clove, earthy almost vegetal spice notes of American coriander, epazote (with even that characteristically hint of epazote licorice character). A touch of chemical-evoking saccharine sweetness finishes this brew off, though it is still wrapped up in the toasty malt / grassy grain character that lingers on for quite some time after the beer has left ones mouth.

This is an interesting brew, while it does not capture the ideal that I have for a Triple, it is quite tasty, and even quite dangerous given its well hidden alcohol content. Still there is something here that makes me think of this as a Soda Pop of Tripels, a giant of a Pop, but still a somewhat simplistic (despite a lot of the complexity that makes up the individual flavor components here) Tripel. Still I am certainly enjoying this, and would have it again. Well wait a minute, ultimately, as this beer sits in my glass, I am tending to like this less and less. It never approaches the point where I dislike it, but the flavors seem to work less and less together.

Slightly hazy orange color with a one finger head with medium retention and leaving some laces.
Aroma of Belgian yeast, oranges, mint, candied sugar and bread.
Spicy flavor with notes of mint, herbal hops, oranges, hay, green apples, pears and finishing with dry white wine. Dry, bitter and spicy aftertaste.
Medium body with effervescent carbonation. Alcohol of 8% abv is harmonic with the overall beer.
Average Tripel. It leans towards the Belgian Strong Pale Ale side. Their best qualities are the spicy notes and how well it hides the high abv content.

A - The cork is packed pretty tight into the 750ml bottle. Upon opening, it was a little bit of a gusher - a lazy geyser of foam would have overtopped the bottle had I not poured it into my Chimay chalice. Bottle #144302, per cork. It does indeed pour with a good deal of foam. Standard tripel body - gold with active carbonation. Very good thin lace - pretty beer.

S - As soon as I popped the cork, it hit me - this is one fruity tripel. Pear, especially - holy crap, what a pear bomb in the aroma. You might as well mash up some Bartlett pears and bury your nose in. That's what this smells like...strong, strong pear. Some other fruits, but mostly pear and some vanilla wafers.

T/F - I definitely get the pear that was in the aroma, but not a whole lot else. Hops seem to be somewhat lacking, and there's only a light spicy/peppery character. A little sweet in the finish, with soft carbonation. Aftertaste of pear nectar. Feel-wise, I like my triples to be a little more flinty in feel. After the incredibly promising start, I have to deduct points.

D - A mixed bag. Certainly a good beer, but when you call yourself a Tripel, you have to bring it, when you have titans like Westmalle, St. Bernardus, Allagash, La Fin Du Monde, and Chimay Cinq Cents in your style category. The intense pear can get wearisome after a while....though with the right pairing (pun intended) or cheese, this could be pretty special.
