A brown triple....I ain't scared.

A: Didn't seem over the top carbonated when I popped the cork, but once the beer hit the glass it was a totally different story. A ginormous, rich, oatmeal colored head congured up out of no where showing absolutely no signs of dropping any time soon. I'm an impatient man and want my beer! The body is very clean, an ambery chestnut hue with with a very still presence to it.

S: Much more triple on the nose than brown. Subtle smells, I had to really get my nose in there to hit the spicy yeast, slight soap suds, cherry highs and fresh cut grass.

T: Interesting, this tastes much more like a brown than a triple. What the hell is going on here! Stay focused, we'll get through this. Begins with complex over ripe prunes and lots of sugar. Malty moments make me think of an Eastern European porter, perhaps even some molassesy doppelbock. Little bit of clever bittering hops sprinkled in to and fro to add a nice dynamic. Mingling of apricots, copper coin, golden raisins and chewy cookie dough really round this beer out and coast it to the finish line. Started out a little sweet but any cloying thoughts I had are now long go. Aftertaste is gingerbread cookie, light on the ginger and heavy on the molasses.

M: Medium to full and very smooth. Carbonation doesn't create any prickly or fluffiness.

D: This is a very nice, and somewhat unique, Belgian beer. Personally, I don't like triples so I was skeptical. This is a fun beer for any Belgian beer enthusiast. Definately recommended.

Brownish with off white yeasty head. Malty, and some spiciness. Very smooth, rich. Dark friuit, chocolate malt. Caramel malt made it drinkable. Corriander and cinammon, some oil which lent even more taste a bit like cola.Lesser known brewery with good stuff.

Pours a clear brown and ruby in the light. A half inch of light tan head sticks for a bit, eventually giving up to the powers that be.

Quite malty on the nose with a cherry medicinal value and a notable alcohol scent. Notes of prunes, figs and dried cherry. Taste follows with a lingering caramel doppelbock sweetness. Feel and drink follow suit as for the style. Carbonation is decent and tries it's best to support this beer.

In the end, this beer is what it is. But what it isn't is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. It is strong, yes. And it is dark, indeed. Yet there is zero sense of a Belgian yeast here and zero love in that regard. Check please...

750 ml bottle for $9.99 at La Bodega in Riverside, Ca, 10/06. Consumed in November 2006.

This is an odd duck beer. A tripel? A tripel Brune? More like a strong Dark Ale than anything. But not quite.

Pours a very nice pretty brown, with ruby highlights and a nice tan head that makes a nice cover (and provides nice creaminess) throughout the drinking session. Quite nice looking beer.

Aroma is really unexciting. Definitely the caramel and roasty toasty of dark malts, pleasant enough but plain and weak. What's there is fine, but there's not much to it.

Flavor is very nice. Much like many BSDA beers, with nice warm rich malts, with nice spicy overtones, quite good. And a bit of a tripel like sweetness/compelxity too. I almost gave it higher scores, but I just felt there are better.

Mouth is a little thin- the alcohol (9%) is not to be found. It seemed weak while eating it with a salad with chicken atop, but is quite nice on its own.

Overall a nice brew.

Medicinal floral flavor... Hop pier than other styles

Well carbonated and medium mouthfeel

Nice and approachable perfect for the Belgian nube. Great with food.

33cl bottle. A brown triple. I've read that the style doesn't have to be pale in color, but usually is as an homage to Westmalle. Love Westmalle but I'm ready to try an offering from someone who's not afraid to be different. Very dark reddish brown with a creamy tan head. No lacing so far. The smell is malt and lighter fruits, more like a triple than the brown its appearance promises. Some spice and a light bubblegum note. The taste is REALLY refreshing! Sharp, peppery notes up front, then the malt kicks in just enough to right the ship. Warm caramel and then a roasted, slightly acidic finish. Nice. The mouthfeel is very carbonated, but then I'm a fan of that. There is some creaminess behind that but not really what I'd expect of a triple. Drinkability is good. The refreshing factor goes a long way. Bon voyage!

Found it on the bottom shelf of the cooler in a random assed liquor store. 750ml corked and caged botle. "Best before" 03/10/07.

It pours a hazy brown with a foamy off-white head that dissipates with no lacing.

The smell is tutti-fruity like some Belgina dark ales, along with some caramel.

The flavor is big and sweet. Tons of caramel. The yeast is pretty prevalent as well. There is some earthiness.

Not bad for being past its best by date.

Poured from a 750ml corked 'n caged bottle into my Gulden Draak tulip. Body is a surprisingly clear and quite dark reddish brown. The color of weak coffee or strong black tea. No fog or flakes. Muddy white head was slow but steady, probably because this bottle was cellared a little cooler. Came to life as it warmed.

Smell was overpowering caramel malts and strong cherry at first - almost sickeningly sweet. In only minutes of rest it dried up into a spicier aroma that was only mildly bready and full of prune, pine, and booze. Possibilities of fresh leather or older oak.

Taste is very brown and almost quad-sweet. Light on the tongue but heavy on the throat with syrupy qualities. Much of the same from the smell but with additions of coffee, dark german bread, solid saison yeasts, and eventually more mexican coffee.

Around the last third of the bottle when things have warmed considerably, the smell becomes much more boozy and with fruits more forward - white raisins and even strawberries. This isn't to say that the massive malts have gone down at all, the others have simply caught up.

The wamer half of the taste becomes more dusty and funky. The yeast becomes more pronounced, but it tastes more like beer yeast and less like bread yeast. Flavours get spicier with more cola and corriander to hold down the sweetness.

All in all, an interesting strong-brown. Sweet yet alcoholic, never tart, with many different phases. The mouthfeel is a bit much by the end of a full bottle, but that is to be expected at this proof, I suppose. Also somewhat discouraging is that the beer almost seems better a bit cold. All of that said, this is a taste treat, like drinking warm spiced brownies. Have one for desert.

New arrival at a local store, and with what I think should be a very fair price of $5 and change.

Pours a dark and clear amber color, with a big chunky off white head.

Taste is clean, with a little apple cider flavor, some light vinegar, and bread, nutmeg, and other spices. Finish is crisp, fairly dry, and with a bready and earthy hop finish.

Mouthfeel is good, nice carbonation, and a good full feeling.

Nice solid drinkable beer, I am not sure that this fits with the Beligian Stong Dark Ale, it's seems a touch light for that, but it's a nice tasty and drinkable beer that is well worth trying, especially if you can find it for the less than sub $6 price tag that I found it for.

I am a big fan of belgian blondes, and so I was very excited to try this one. The summary of my review is that I believe this beer was a slightly above average blonde. It had some good things and some average things, but nothing really bad.

The Good: Fine texture, smells fine, and has some nice subtle flavors. Drinks well, and definitely hides the ABV well, as other reviewers have mentioned.

The Average: The tastes did not blend as well as I would have liked a flavorful blonde to do. But it still managed to do the job above average while not being offensive in the least.

I would have liked this beer to blend a bit better but overall a fine beer.

Presentation: 750ml brown glass bottle sealed, corked with a black single strapped wire cage. The thumbed cork has a No. 144302 on it. Main and neck labels are dark brown edged with a dark metallic blue; the main obverse label has a picture of the partially ruined Abbaye d’Aulne which sits next to the newly installed Brewery. Described as “Abbaye d’Aulne Triple Brune”, a ‘Special Brown Ale’. Listed at 9% Alc./Vol. and recommended to be served slowly at 52° – 54° F. Best Before End 03/10/07 E 10:08.

Appearance: Dark brown body on the desk exhibits a clear deep mahogany body when backlit, ruby flashes refract the light and add a gem-like nature to the looks. The tanned head pours with a thick consistency thanks to its composition from thousands of tiny nucleated bubbles; the surface is perfectly formed and has no blemishes. Minimal lacing slowly falls back into the glass. Carbonation is refreshing and zingy.

Nose: Reticent aromas, dark malts, earthy ops, toffee, dark berries. Yeast and spices bolster the nasal delight but sadly the strength is a little too toned down for my liking.

Taste: Spicy malts have a yeast infused background. Toffee malts, rum and raisin with a spiced feel, tangy fruits and a sweetness that does not feel sickly, moreover it seems balanced by the spice malts. Candi sugar and molasses with some fig and prune juice tendency. Warming character does not seem to betray the alcohol. Dark rich fruits have an over ripeness which blends perfectly with the carbonation and a hint of dark cooking chocolate to lend smoothness. Liquorice and anise sneaks into the foray once in a while too, especially as it warms. Doesn’t quite all come together as it should but it damn tasty nonetheless.

Mouthfeel: Thick body, chewy almost, toffee like with a warm breaded rising dough body. Satisfying and heavier as it warms. Like the Triple Blonde it hides the 9% rather well.

Drinkability: Not much effort required to take down the 750ml. The latter part of the bottle went well with some sharp aged Irish Cheddar.

Overall: Like the Triple Blonde, there was no sign of any yeasty bits in the last glass or bottle, so I wouldn’t even bother sticking this one in the cellar, which makes the Best Before Date even more important to check before purchasing. Much better than the Triple Blonde, the Triple Brune is a deeper more characterful brew with lots of twists and turns. A clean living Brune which has some impressive traits but it has does have one or too niggles and it does not seem able to work up to its potential like it should, and for the money there are better efforts out there.

Poured into a chalice a nice brown/amber color, nice carbonation, nice one-finger plus light tan head, with some nice sticky lacing to follow. The nose is malty, with some yeast, raisins, figs, plums. The taste is malty, sweet, some yeast notes, very nice touch of figs/raisins/plums. Medium body. Drinkable, this is a nice BSDA, recommended.

Aromatically this starts off strong with that triple aroma of malts, fruits and alcohol. There is a lot of carbonation upon my sip, just the way I like it. Granted the carbonation overshadows the touches of plums, grapes, wood (almost like the cork swam in the beer), and dark cherries. Maybe I have a sweet tooth but I can’t say I don’t enjoy this beer. Its too bad the aroma is so much better than the flavor. I acquired this at the NEPA case split club last Friday.

Abbaye D'Aulne Triple Brune pours a dark brown with a tan head from a brown corked and caged 750 ml bottle. A little bit of raison and some caramel are present in the aroma. This is a very nice tasting beer, some caramel and some fruit are present and the alcohol is virtually undetectable. Pretty good.

Now it is being made with 8%ABV.
Nice mahogany ruby color. Poured a thick head with good retention.
Predominant aroma of red wines and dry fruits.
Flavor of grapes, prunes, fig and caramel. Hints of condiments and liquorice. Got also some floral and earthy hops. Alcohol is very present but cosy. Aftertaste is mildly dry and fruity.
Full body with low carbonation with an effervescent sensation.
Good beer, though a bit too heavy on the sugar. Nevertheless, I liked the fact that was hoppier than average Belgian beers.

This pours from 750ML corked and single strap caged bottle(best by Oct 3 2007) a clear dark brown with a good head of foam that shrinks fairly quickly leaving just a few islands and there is some lacing.

The smell has some sweet and roasted malt with a touch of chocolate.

The taste is good. I'm getting some chocolate with roasted malt, some dark fruit, plum and fig, and a bit of tartness and alcohol. It's quite warming and relaxing. After a few more sips, I notice a nutinness and a yeasty flavour in the background; this is a pretty complex brew and I'm enjoying sipping on it. It's going to take me a while to finish the bottle....

Bottom line: A Triple Brune? That's a firsy for me but I have tosay, for this brew, it works quite well. I recommend it.
