A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a hazy pinkish color with a 2 inch head. Smell is funky, earthy. Taste is unusual. Beets, yeast, some champagne like notes. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, it ain't bad, and it's certainly a one of a kind beer.

I recently paid a visit to Hunger-n-Thirst & while I was there, I scoured their bottle shop, as is my wont. I was intrigued by this one & since today is my birthday (55th), I think that this might make for a pleasant celebration that includes The CANQuest (tm)!

From the CAN: "local beet saison"; "Designed By Wooly Press".

I beCAN by Crack!ing open the vent to start a slow, gentle C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass. I watched in rapt fascination as it foamed up to form two-plus fingers of foamy, soapy, rocky, eggshell-white head with moderate retention, slowly falling away to wisps. Color was a solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had the usual farmhouse funk, but this time, it was acCANponied by a subtle earthiness, like something from the garden, not the barnyard. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste, while retaining the usual funkiness of the style, also tasted of beets! How do I know? Red beet eggs (hard boiled eggs immersed in a heavily-diluted vinegar solution with sliced onions & beets) are a local PA Dutch treat. I used to make them with my grandmothers & then on my own in California. Once you taste beets for the first time, you will never forget that earthy flavor. CANother trick is to bake beets in the oven, caramelizing their sugar, before slicing them & eating with some pepper. Mmm. This was a really great acCANpaniment to the flavor profile inherent in a Saison & bravo to the brewer(s) for CANming up with the CANcept! I am not a huge Saison fan, but this was one that I would reCANmend to others. Finish was dry, earthy, funky & a real treat! Yum. YMMV.

5th Review. Beets in fall beer work well. See also Carton Vild Bits.
a) slight beet ping tinge, in hazed golden/amber/beety body, with surprising lasting white head for a field beer.
s) bright field aromas, of earth, beets, dirt, but no real dankness. Garden wild, saison wild yeast notes.
t) Follow all the aromas and builds. Very dry and white wine like, champagne like. Invites you back for sip after minerally, dirt-dry sip.
f) Champagne like, effervescent, drinkable, mineral.
o) Along with Carton Vild Beets - best use of beets in beer which is a more natural complement than say your tired old pumpkin.

It’s not the color I expected, but maybe wrong of me to assume a beer brewed with beets would be “beet” red. Smell is earth, anise, and mold (in a good way). Taste is of flowers and cloves. Over all, a very good, satisfying beer.

an extremely interesting beer, one of the first i have had from these guys on draft. the color is absolutely insane, beet pink, not purple, sun drenched stained glass and neon radiance, uniform light haze, and most curiously a purely white head, hardly any pink to it at all, an inch high and as thick as shaving cream, lasting and giving this a real alive look, as sexy as a beer can get in the glass as far as i am concerned! the aroma is oddly vacuous, which i kind of dig, its basically just the beets, earthy and familiar, raw, like my garden, like the dirt is still on them, but very little grain and even weirder, especially for these guys, is that there is very little yeast here too, i expected a more wild or saison complexion, not much of either. the flavor is the same, but i find myself loving it, like, its insanely dry, maybe a little raw wheat and a champagne type yeast but close to flavorless, any funk at all seems to be from the beets themselves, which are delicate and natural not heavy or cooked or wintery like beets can be as food, they are mild but retain their raw identity here, so interesting! i cant believe how this just disappears on the swallow, like totally gone no residuals at all. effervescent too, drinkable to high heaven. i sort of want more wild yeast to this, but i also like the minimalist and agricultural nature of the beer without it. its all in service of the beers. one of a kind, which i have come to expect from fonta floral. these guys have my full attention right now!

Avoid if possible. Zero beer color like I would have expected. The smell is dirty like legitimately smelling dirt. The taste isn't much better and leaves a ton to be desired.
