25 April 2016
Brew By Numbers – 08|01 Foreign Extra Stout
Poured into snifter from 12oz bottle
Bottled: 27 January 2015; Best By: 27 January 2017

Appearance – Dark, but just shy of pitch black. Very faint brown tinge. Pours a moderate half-finger bubbly head that dissipates quickly.

Smell – Very tame smell. A little milky sweet, almost a hint of marshmallow (although not so sugary). A mild nutty presence, but far from aggressive

Taste + Moutfeel – The taste is very enjoyable. The most noticeable aspect is that very dark, aggressive roast. Stays on the tongue after the sip, reminiscent of a coffee (although I don’t think there is any in here). Some light tobacco quality too. A hint of alcohol I think takes away from this beer, although that’s nitpicking. A very clear, understated body. Even at 8%, its still not a thick, molasses/syrupy body, but instead drinks almost like glass of 2% milk. Has some bubbly carbonation that lightly breaks on your tongue. Maybe the slightest hint of vanilla to mellow out the roast. Marginal licorice too (and not so much as to turn off a licorice-hater, either).

Overall – Very impressed with 08|01. I think its complex enough to enjoy, and not so heavy as to demand a lot of attention. Drinks easily. I’d be very happy to have this again. This beer has aged for a bit more than a year (although I only bought it two weeks ago), and I think its perfect drinking right now.

Score – 9.2/10

Bottled and bottle conditioned
Just seems one peg down on expectations on all fronts
From the quickly disappearing head
To the muted aromas and flavours
I think the honey is a mistake as well

8.0% version.

The colour is black (100 EBC), the liquid is clear. The two finger head is brown and compact. It sinks very slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is malty. Fresh roasted notes, hints of smoke, mint and bitter herbs. Milk chocolate bars and sweet cream.

The taste is bitter and dry with roasted malts: Coffee, toffee, cocoa. Growing sweetness, hints of earth, wood, mint and bitter herbs. Medium body. The aftertaste got slowly growing notes of smoked delicatessen, coffee and bitter orange peels. The sticky finish is sweet with chocolate toffee.

The carbonation is strong, the many short-lived bubbles are fresh. The liquid is smooth.

Coming in a 330ml brown bottle, bottle-conditioned; bottled on 11/12/2013, BB 11/12/2014, served lightly-chilled in a long-stemmed, broad-rimmed goblet.

A: pours an almost pitch black colour, coming with very fine carbonation and a thin khaki foamy head to last.
S: good composition of roast malts, coffee candy, black dates, nutty praline; given a swirl, the nutty malts deliver a really deep and delicious gristy aroma, along with earthy and floral hints of hops.
T: the rich, but not heavy, swallow of coffee-ish and burned-caramely maltiness is backed by a nicely lingering charred-wood aroma, a tangy feel of herbal bitterness and a sound acidity from roast malts with faint resemblance of black prunes; the chewy mouthfeel keeps the palate lively, and adds a bit more depth to the flavour at the end of each long sip. The roast-walnutty (on skins) undertones seem to linger nicely at the back of the palate, otherwise finishing dry and pretty clean, without any undesirable cloying/sugary mouthfeel.
M&O: healthily carbonated, this medium-plus bodied strong stout shows a very decent integrity and balance on the flavour profile, as well as keeping a relatively dry mouthfeel at the end of each sip. To a dark ale lover, this product can be added to the book of “Beers To Drink Again”, for sure.
