8oz pour at the taproom. Thick black pour, finger of frothy looking dark tan head. Retains pretty well.

Aroma, roast malt, molasses, cocoa.

Taste, roast malt, dark chocolate, some dark red fruit or black cherry. Finishes with raw cocoa, lighter coffee and anise.

Full body, near creamy mouthfeel, coats well. Hides that large 13.2 extremely well. Would almost question it's accuracy.

A real nice big offering from these guys. Their small batches have been outstanding. One of the better non barrel aged imperials I've had in a long time.

I'm trying this at the house my Bestie rented on Hilton head island. It poured an opaque dark with ercu head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had hints of oak. The taste was slight red winey....as it warms the bourbon becomes apparent. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall it's a decent stout.

22oz bottle given to me by a friend. 2015 vintage, no bottling date. Served in a goblet.

Pours dark brown but rests in the glass solid black with a two and a half finger cap of fluffy, pale tan froth. The head shrinks slowly, leaving a partial haze cover and a fuzzy belt that imparts a few scattered clouds of lace.

Aromas of cherry-tinged dark fruit, cocoa, wet wood, earth and some burnt sugars.

Tastes rich and roasty. Bitter dark fruit skins, dark chocolate, oak, cherries, piney bitterness, char, caramel, faint vanilla and a bit of booze. The bourbon oak is not as presnt as I'd prefer but along with the cherries adds some nice sweet layers of flavor to the roast-heavy base.

Creamy, smooth, full body with a subtle tickle of carbonation. Aftertaste of burnt brownies, cherry pits and faint notes of charred wood.

Dirty Commie Heathen is on the big, bitter, roasty end of the stout spectrum. Aging on bourbon oak and cherries was a good idea because those flavors, while not particularly strong, serve to mitigate the bitterness and keep it from becoming too much. The nose and taste are quite good but the mouthfeel is where this truly excells. My first taste from The Unknown Brewing Co shows that they have some respectable skills.

Poured from a bomber into a snifter, the beer is jet black and thick on the pour, with a tall, foamy, dense, tan colored head. Good cling to the glass as the head recedes. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, woody highlights, roasted caramel, subtle cherry tartness, and roasted coffee. Pretty well balanced nose. Flavors are very bitter and heavily roasted forward, with a solid blast of cocoa nib and roasted coffee hitting the forward tongue first. Vanilla and bourbon notes lighten things up a bit, and there is a very subtle cherry tartness that really comes out as the beer travels over the palate towards the back of the tongue. Subtle building warmth reminds you of the increased ABV, but the smooth, velvety body keeps it extremely drinkable. The aftertaste is more char and coffee, with some of the bittersweet chocolate still kicking around. Smooth, heavily lingering finish, with a decent coating left on the taste buds to allow you to enjoy for a while between each sip, and this is a sipper. Very solid beer!
