A hidden small brewery well worth a trip. Beers are good and varied. BBQ truck out front. Expansion plans on tap (so to speak). IPA is best in area. Brown ale excellent. Lots of sour and wild ales to try.

Had a great experience here recently, after having mediocre experiences elsewhere that day, this was exactly the type of relaxing and unpretentious place we needed. It's hard to find, and completely hidden from the street. Once you cross the tracks, it's around back on the right. The building is a former army medical supply depot, with original wood roof beams that are impressive. The bar area is small but comfortable, seating for 12 plus tables all around.

Selection was very good, several saisons, wild ales, and even an imperial stout. Life of Don was a highlight, a wild ale dry hopped with Citra, Galaxy, and Cascade. The assistant brewer was bartending, she was very personable, offering tastes and chatting with everyone at length, answering all our nerdy beer questions.

Overall, Freehouse is a cool quirky brewery off the beaten path, making some solid beers. Worth a visit for sure.

My score may be a bit high because I came in on a Tuesday at 2pm and my wife and I were the only ones there. We got individual attention, obviously, but the beer tender was so nice and answered all our questions without hesitation. The view is fabulous and probably the best I've seen at a small brewery. The beers were very well done and suited my particular tastes.

A tiny, very basic taproom, adjacent to a good sized, but somewhat cobbled together looking brewhouse stuffed into a grungy hot warehouse. The saving grace of the place is a great, riverfront view that would have been more of a selling point at a more tolerable time of year (it is hard to sit outside and enjoy the view in the depths of a shitty, humid southern summer). The beer selection was limited to six taps, but what they had was pretty decent. Nothing that would make waves outside of the local scene, but some were pretty nice and suggested that there is potential here. Worth stopping in, but probably better to do so in the fall or spring.

A visit to Freehouse Brewing Co.’s production brewery and tasting room had all the trappings of what one has come to expect from a fledgling brewery:
Off the beaten path address? Check.
Industrial surroundings? Check.
Crossing paved over train tracks replete with weeds and rusty bits? Check.
Lengthy pause as GPS says I’ve reached my destination when I know I haven’t but that it can’t be too far off? Check.
But best of all, good beer served by friendly and enthusiastic staff? You betcha.
And unexpectedly, a serene unobstructed view of the distant Ashley river that gives a very pleasant ambiance to an otherwise gritty industrial setting.
Tasting room/bar opens up to an uncovered deck. At parking lot level there is a pavilion with picnic tables and a food truck depending on the day.
Beer was served in both cool little tasters which are miniature versions of the full size short-stemmed goblets, their other serving size.
Bottles and growlers were available.
Selection was good, ranging from sessionable summer ales to dark imperial BA stouts. I did not sample their higher ABV offerings but most outstanding was the Hibiscus Lemongrass Saison.
And while this is a review of the brewery/tasting room I must give praise to Dashi Food Truck. Their adventurous and innovative cuisine is worth searching out.
Holy City is nearly walkable, just a mile away in similar industrial settings, minus the river view.
