Pours an effervescent & scarlet hued brown with 2+ fingers of rocky tan head. Nice lacing & better than average head retention

S: Brown bread, a little cherry & fig as this warms

T: Brown bread, sour cherry, ginger & a little tangerine up front. Ginger, brown bread & dark cherry all mix as this warms, a touch of brown sugar & dryness as well, along with orange peel & a little juicy-fruit gum. Finishes with cocoa, candi sugar, cherry, dryness & a little green banana

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation. Carbonation picks up a bit once warm

This was drinkable enough, but nothing to get too excited about, ABV is well hidden

A: poured into a snifter to a clear reddish brown with a two finger dense off white head that retains well and leaves minimal lacing
S: smells of spices, cherries, some malt sweetness
T: taste is ginger, light cherry flavors, slight cinnamon, and a little sweetness throughout. swallow is more ginger and cinnamon with some slight toasted malt flavor
M: this beer is fairly full in the mouth with soft carbonation and a drying finish
O: Overall the amount of spices in the nose and taste is strange and overpowers the rest of the beer. When I think of a Belgian Strong Dark I think of Trois Pistoles and this beer falls well short. Belgian beers should have a lot of flavors provided by the yeast and malts while this beer relies on spice and fruit additions. The mouthfeel is great and there is some complexity but the nose and taste bring this beer down a few notches.

Picked this up at the brewery. Slightly hazy mahogany-brown pour with a one finger beige head that fades quickly with decent lacing. The nose is malty and spicy with tons of cinnamon and ginger along with hints of nutmeg, caramel, brown sugar, and subtle clove and black cherries. The taste follows suit with the cinnamon and ginger prominent once again, with the cherries emerging as it warmed. Hints of caramel, clove, nutmeg, brown sugar, and subtle orange peel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with fizzy carbonation and a dry, bitter sweet finish. Overall, I preferred this on tap, but still a really nice, flavorful Xmas beer.

22 oz. bottle. Great label, like all Great Raft beers.

Nice, dark Belgian-style Christmas beer. I found it to have a nice balance between the Belgian yeast characteristics and the added cherries. The cinnamon and ginger had a very delicate presence, which I'm not complaining about since I find the spice to be overwhelming in a lot of Christmas beers. Carbonation and mouthfeel were appropriate for the style. Another solid effort from these guys.

Got in a BIF from jdell15. 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/17/2016. Pours lightly hazy dark ruby red, light orange/copper color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, red apple, red grape, orange peel, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted brown bread; with lighter notes of nutmeg, peppercorn, clove, ginger, cinnamon, banana, bubblegum, cocoa, toffee, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity yeast, dark/bready malts, and light spice notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, red apple, red grape, orange peel, caramel, brown sugar, and toasted brown bread; with lighter notes of nutmeg, peppercorn, clove, ginger, cinnamon, banana, bubblegum, cocoa, toffee, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal bitterness and yeast tang/spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, cherry, apricot, red apple, red grape, orange peel, caramel, brown sugar, toasted brown bread, nutmeg, light pepper/clove, toffee, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malts, and light spice notes; with a nice malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky/tangy mouthfeel that is nice, Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is a very good Belgian strong dark ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malts, and light spice notes; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. I expected way more spices from the description. Super stone fruity and sweet, not as peppery on the yeast as I would have preferred. Well balanced malt and yeast flavors, with nice all around complexity. A very enjoyable offering.

Another strong showing from Great Raft with this sting ale. Label is incredible, the beer very good and true to form. Eat your heart out Abita.
