12 oz draft pour at Great Raft Brewery

Appearance: Poured very dark burgundy/black with a very nice white tan head that held up throughout the glass.

Smell: Smelled of molasses and roasted malts. Maybe a little chocolate and raisins as well. Not a lot of smoke like most Baltic porters have, but thats good with me.

Taste: Semi sweet chocolate with a very mild bitterness. Has a dark bready taste from the roasted malts that is balanced with the minimal use of hops. One of the better tasting Baltic porters I've had

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly velvety mouthfeel. Most porters tend to be on the thin watery side, but not this one. Almost on the American stout side of mouthfeel.

Overall: This is probably one of my top 3 beers from this great little brewery. I never know what to expect when they release something, but they knock it out of the park every time. This porter was very well made, beautiful, and tasty. This is one of those beers that will age well in a barrel.

Pours dark with minimal head. Good lace. Smell is bitter chocolate, stone fruit such as plum, figs. Taste follows nose. Alcohol is hidden very well. Feel is heavy-medium and lightly carbonated. Overall, this is really a great beer.

Pours an effervescent & turbid mahogany/ebony with 2 fingers of caramel colored head. Alright lacing & head retention

S: Maple syrup, bourbon, boozey once warm

T: Follows the nose, dryness, a touch of charred grain & some booze burn up front, filtered through Bourbon, vanilla, raisin & plum. Some dark chocolate & vanilla, plus maple syrup dryness/sweetness as this warms, some rougher barrel notes & boozey warmth as well. Finishes with nice Bourbon & Maple notes, pretty dry with some plum & raisin & just a hint of smokeyness

MF: Medium body, creamy carbonation at first

Well worth picking up, I believe this will get even better with age

Old Mad Joy has almost no head, a very dark brown appearance, and an oily sheen, on the top. No glass lacing. Aroma isn't too pleasant, with strong prune juice, raisins, and booze detected. Taste is very much of fudge brownies, walnuts, some coconut, nut oil, and some cream. The body is medium, and Old Mad Joy finishes rich and luxuriant. Weird- bad smell & awesome flavor.

Beautiful dark color. Big thick head. Smells very delicious. Taste is good. A unique combination. Maybe needs a touch of sweet. Kind of thin but almost creamy. A very good beer.
On draft at Ron's Corner Tavern.

Black wax top that was very difficult to open. 2/17/17 bottle date.

Pours a very dark chestnut brown that borders on black in color in the glass. A fat two fingers of lasting tan head that leave sheets of lacing.

Spicy bourbon aroma, with vanilla, quality chocolate ganache and the slightest hint of cherry behind. Absolutely delicious smelling. World class.

You get the same barrel flashes up front in the taste, with the vanilla notes most prevalent. There's a nice addition of anise, too.

The base beer doesn't seem quite robust enough though. The chocolate's gone, replaced by a lingering flavor of soggy toasted brown bread, perhaps with a mild roasted peanut character. It's not as bad as that sounds, but still leaves me wanting more.

It's medium bodied, slightly creamy, with appropriate carbonation, while still coming across pretty thin.

This is a great beer, but the base doesn't quite hold up the barrel. With darker malts, a touch more bittering hops and a heavier body, this could have been one of the best beers ever. Such is life! Still very enjoyable.
