500 ml bottle, Aldi, Bristol - Pours dark brown with a medium tanned head. Nice lacing. Medium carbonation. Aroma - roasted malts, light bread. Taste - light roasted malts, light caramel/biscuit, light bitter finish. Okay German black beer.

Dark black in color and barely penetrable to light. Light Brussels lacing. A fingernail of khaki head covers less than a third of the top of the beer. I smell plenty of dark and sweet mat. There's a hint of smoke in the aroma. The taste is comprised of sweet, dark malt. The mouth is slightly sticky for a lager, but it is due to all of that dark, sweet malt.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of July 2017. Purchased from Aldi a little while back. The label calls it a dark pilsner-style beer.

A: Poured into a tulip pint glass. A very deep reddish-brown hue that appears almost black in the glass. Good carbonation. Yields a large head of frothy cream-coloured foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer.

S: Aroma of grainy malt with hints of caramel, husks, stewed hops, mild barley sugar and a twinge of roastiness. Average.

T: Tastes of subtle caramel malt with hints of husky grain, stewed hops and faint roasted notes. Mildly sweet, with a slight noble hop character in the background. A crisp, balanced bitterness upon swallowing.

M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly but rather light. Spritzy carbonation over a thinner than expected body. Aftertaste of caramel malt and stewed hops.

O: Decent but unexciting. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour lack expressiveness. I also thought the malt character very subdued. So-so body; quite thin. Goes down OK but doesn't leave much of an impression. Worth trying once.

Dark, with a thick head that lasted for a long time.

Smooth taste that is surprisingly light against the dark, pleasant color. Almost refreshing for a dark brew. One of the best Dunkels I have had in the bottle.

Flip top bottle lets out a nice steamy breath of dark goodness when it is opened. . .almost like a bit of beer steam is escaping!

Loved it.

Poured from a .5L swing top to a beer glass the liquid id close to black with a 2 finger light mocha head.

The smell is mildly roasty with a fresh hopes aroma.

The taste is good mild roasty flavor gives way to a mild hopy finish. Light notes of chocolate and light roast coffee as well as a nutty after taste.

The mouthfeel is good a classic black lager medium body and good carbonation.

The drinkability is good not the best Schwartz brew I know but good in a pinch. As I sit here in Heidelberg sampling what I could find this first week of a good long stay bier wise it can only get better.

Pours a near black color with nice thick tan head.

The smell consists mainly of caramel malts with just hint of smoke.

Sweet malts dominate the flavor with a hint of smoke. Not really much to it. Mouthfeel is kinda watery with prickly carbonation.

I was expecting a little more from this, the appearance was great but thats where it ended.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a dark chestnut amber with a one finger light tan head that dissipated fairly quickly to a ring around the glass with wispy lacing. Aroma of sweet toasted malt, molasses, light nuts and a hint of hops. Flavor follows with toasted malt, a slight nuttiness, rye bread, finishes slightly dry with light grassy hops, faintly metallic. Light bodied with nice carbonation. The flavor is subdued, but very nicely balanced. Flavors are good enough that they make me want a slightly more intense version. Still nice schwarzbier that popped up in our market and is apparently a one time only arrival. I'll have it again if it shows up.

Lager pours black with redish brown hues in the pilsner glass, off white head that subsides down to a thin film, shy lacing that eventually drops back into the beer.

Aroma of german pils : delicate malt, fresh noble hops. Incredibly soft aroma considering its color. Flavor is of rich delicate malt, a firm bitter hop balance and a smoky, almost a hint of molasses like finsh.

Very interesting style, I'll look out for more "blackbeers" in the future.

A: The beer is clear but very dark red in color (black when viewed from afar) and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down, leaving a large patch of bubbles in the center of the glass and a thick collar around the edge.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose along with some faint hints of chocolate and bitterness.
T: The taste has faint bits of sweetness with flavors of dark malts and hints
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied, clean and a little watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but the taste lacks complexity.

It's sweet with moderate hop bitterness which lingers from the carbonation. The malt is well integrated with the hops for a unified flavor profile which ends in.... water with smaller sips and a robust flavor with larger swigs. Colour is dark with a generous head disappearing leaving little lacing. Very good overall, and for the abv it's excellent.

Recommended!

Flip-top half-litre bottle from a local Aldi store: best before 22 June 2013, poured into a Wolnzacher Brauhaus tall glass tankard on 8 Dec 2012 (@ home).

Looked great: huge tan coloured head of foam sat on top of a deep, dark ruby red body. The brew was clear and clean when held up to a good light source.

The aroma given off was minimal: some German rye bread and maltiness with a touch of grain in the background.

Taste wise it came to life a little: malty, semi-sweet and lively in the mouth feel. I've struggled with this style before: having trouble finding any strong flavours and any depth, this was better than most. Far from robust and flavoursome it did however have something about it. There are chocolate and coffee notes in the taste and it does feel a little richer than most German Black Lagers I've encounted. Considering the price (less than two pounds): this was a good deal.

Moderate to high carbonation. Watery texture. Black grain hints, smoky touch, & clean bitterness in the middle. Bitter cocoa & dried nuts notes in a long bitter finish. Licorice candy on the aftertaste.
