An American red ale that is aggressively-hopped, but balanced out with big caramel malt backbone. The hops linger for a minute, but do not destroy your palate.

On-tap at The Galley, St. Petersburg, FL

A: The beer is relatively clear amber in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a thin light beige head that left a thin layer of bubbles on the surface and streaks of bubbles running down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of caramel malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has light flavors of caramel malts and herbal hops with a light to moderate amount of bitterness. The herbal hops linger in to the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a rather hoppy amber ale. It's not too malty and there is a nice amount of "bite" from the hops.

from a 12 oz can from Total Wine. no "canned on" date on the can but TW says they put on shelf on 4/22.

Smell - caramelly sweet, toasted bread, fruity (maybe guava?) hop aroma and subtle yeast esters.
Look - a nice deep amber color, no reddish tint though, with a thick tan head about 1/2" high with very decent retention. the beer is mostly clear. some lacing was observed.
Taste - this is a malt forward brew, all caramel and toast that is well balanced by moderate bitterness that mostly manifests itself in the back of the palate.
Feel - pronounced astringency in this medium bodied, oily textured ale. the carbonation is lively. finishes short on the sweetness (drops off quick) but long on the tinkering odd astringency at the palate.
Overall - IMHO not really a red IPA but more of an American red ale. not a great example of either style though. not my favorite or something I'd drink a lot of.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. can into an Upland Brewing pint glass.

A: Burnished bronze, moderately hazy, with a dense off-white head that has good retention. Visible carbonation on the low side.

S: Bready malts, resinous oily hops, and light toffee. Not overall a big aroma though.

T: Sticky resin hops, bready malts that have a touch of toffee sweetness, and bitter grapefruit rind. Naked alpha bitterness and more citrus rind in the hang. The malt sweetness is dominated by the hops and alpha/flavorless bitterness.

M: Medium body for style, carbonation sensation on the low side again. The alcohol presence seems a little more prominent than it should.

O: A hop forward red ale for sure – less balanced than most. Drinkable, and I'll certainly go through the five more cans in the fridge, but I don't know that I'll seek out another six pack. It doesn't come close to Tocobaga for something that's on the shelves. But this is one of the better offerings from this brewery that I've had so far.

Pours a clear dark amber reddish color with plenty of white head. Pine, caramel malts, little citrus, and cereal on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with more caramel and light pine.

They accomplished what they were after, a hoppy Red Ale. I personally do not like this combo's taste. It looks great and feels ok it just tastes strange. 3.00
