Had on tap at Lynnwood Grill. Good example of the class. It compares favorably with Firestone Walker's Wookey Jack, which is my Gold Standard for the Black IPA. Smooth drinking at 7%, it has a nice hop presence and the toasted malt character that gives it a really nice flavor, one that you really hope for in this type of ale. Give me a growler of this and I'm a happy guy.

On tap at State of Beer. Lots of citrus and pine resin nose, almost all hop and no malt smell. Perfect. Smooth and clean bitterness, again all hop and very small taste of roasted malts and residual sweet. Good and dry. Very good Black IPA

Nice dark beer with a light tan head that left only a random speck of lacing. The aroma is piney and floral with a smell of roasted malt and hints of chocolate. The taste is nice and sweet with chocolate notes and a really nice pine flavor and lots of citrus. There is a really nice bitter finish that has a little sweetness to it. This is a really great black IPA.

This self-described Black IPA pours brown and effervescent with ruby highlights, topped by a brief-lived medium pebbly tan head that leaves good lacing in the form of rotten sheets and spiky bands. The nose is medium in intensity: bright grapefruit and cannabis-like florals with more subtle pine and hints of perfume, all topped by moderate alcohol overtones; nary an allusion to dark malt is to be found. Up front, the palate is medium-bitter, slightly grassy pine; mid-palate the grassiness increases and the hops broaden to include some grapefruit character, a bit of IPA soap and hints of cannabis. The malt shows as a moderate bittersweet nutty character and a darkish bready foundation with hints of toffee. The finish is a modest hit of citrus and chocolate; the linger is a slightly grassy, slightly perfumed, considerably bitter pine flavor that lasts for a good while. Mouthfeel is quite astringent, and is thinnish for the medium-full body; the texture is modestly creamy and medium-peppery from the well-expressed carbonation. (16 oz can, 30 days after pkg)

Appearance - Pours deep dark mahogany with light fluffy caramel colored head lasts quite awhile leaving lines of lacing all around the glass.

Aroma - The aroma on this is amazing, light floral notes combined with a definite hoppiness. I also seem to detect roasted malts and some sweet chocolate as well.

Taste - The first thing I notice are the hops, they are well balanced with the roasted malts again the sweetness from what seems to be chocolate. Lots of pine and grapefruit and there also seems to be a little vanilla crazy good flavors.

Feel - Medium body just the right amount of bitterness pretty dry finish.

Overall - I continue to be impressed with what these guys are putting out. Great flavors wonderful aroma might be the best black IPA I have tried.
