Not retired by any means...bottled on 5/18/16.Pours into an impy nonic a clear brass color with a sticky half finger white head that settles slowly into a frothy mass.Dank and earthy hops with the earth really sticking out, sweet sugary caramel malts are quite hefty as well.Earthiness is the main flavor component along with sweet malts that really get more sweet as I drink more.I bought this outta nostalgia, growing up in the middle of the mitten I wanted to try a MI hopped IPA.This is mainly just average really.

New Holland "Michigan Awesome Hatter"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating

Michigan Awesome Hatter pours a very hazy brass-copper body beneath a full head of creamy off-white foam. Both the head retention and the lacing are excellent. It looks like a proper pint of English ale, and it smells of it as well, but with the addition of some light citrus hops. It's nicely floral, and even a touch grassy and piney, and backed by caramelish malt. All of the aforementioned characteristics carry over into the flavor, and it's really nicely balanced and rounded with the bready, toasty, and caramelish malt dominating. It's anchored by what I would consider a moderate bitterness for an American-brewed IPA these days, and it leans towards sweetness but never really gets there - it's more of a grainy sweet note. Withe the exception of the lemony and subtly piney hops, I really see this as more of an English-style ale; and to be honest, although it fits as an IPA, it could also easily fit as a premium bitter. Regardless, it's a great looking, satisfying tipple - it just might not turn the heads of those looking for a bold IPA.

L - Pours a slightly hazy amber body with orange hues. Half-inch white head persists for about a minute.

S - Citrus and cut grass dominate initially, with some pine/resin present. Moderate biscuit and toasted malts. No alcohol or phenolics. A bit of graininess is present.

T - The balance in the flavor doesn't follow that in the aroma. The grainy and biscuit of the malts and the piney resin from the hops are well-balanced, but the citrus that I got in the nose is largely missing, and I get a more bitter finish than the aroma led me to expect. The finish is semi-dry, and the bitterness lingers, but isn't overwhelming.

F - Spot on for the style. Medium-light body and moderate carbonation. Low warmth and creaminess. A touch of hop-based astringency.

O - A solid, highly drinkable IPA for those who like the flavors tipped in favor of the bitter components, but don't want a palate scorcher. Personally I'd prefer a bit more of the citrus character that I got from the aroma to come through in the taste.

Pours a slightly murky semi-deep golden color. Nice finger or two of head and great irregular lacing. Aroma has lots of grapefruit and sweet malt. Taste is similar to smell, with a great, almost perfect carbonation level. Clean, crisp finish with very light aftertaste of citrus and citrus rind.

Enjoyed form the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This nice IPA pours a cloudy brownish orange with a nice head of off white foam that settles to a thick ring, firm pool, and nice lacing. Nose of bittering and herbal hop notes, a touch of sweet tea, and nice tropical fruit background. Flavors mimic the nose with fruity peach like tea flavors that fade from the front and sides to a lightly bracing piney and bittering hops note. Good carbonation keeps the mouth feel lively, while the malt keeps the hops in check. Finish is lightly sweet and lingering with bittering hops. A solid offering. More malt forward for those who are not total hop heads.

Pours a cloudy orange with 1/2 inch head and nice lacing. Smell is slightly sweet muted citrus. Taste is quite similar to the smell. All in all, not a bad beer. I liked the Regular Mad Hatter better.
