When I tried a four-pack of this beer in 2016, I loved it. I gave it a weighted rating of 4.58, which was a top ten score for me. Last night, I had some of the 2018 batch on draft at the Knickerbocker. This time, it was harsh and the flavor seemed somewhat artificial. This is one of the biggest drops in the taste of a beer that I have ever experienced. Instead of replacing my old score with a low one, I'm averaging the two, in the hope that last night's batch was not what New Holland intended it to be.

The beer pours Black with a medium khaki head. It has medium low carbonation. The beer smells of coconut, raw cocoa, marzipans, vanilla, and rum. It tastes of coconut, cocoa powder, a little earthy, almonds, vanilla, and rum barrel. The feel is medium, a little thin. A very good ba stout from New Holland.

Pours a dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma was big on real sweet coconut, also having oak, vanilla and coffee in the background.

Tastes extremely of coconut with some rum barrel aspects and tannins sticking to the palate. The roasted malt base of Dragon's Milk can barely stand up to the coconut. The flavors are pretty nice but can get overwhelming. Full bodied, smooth ale with a nice mouthfeel but sweetness lingers on.

It's best in small doses for sure. Interesting due to how much fresh shaved coconut flavor is packed into this beer.

From bottle to glass, look is black with light tan head.
Smell is amazing, like an alcoholic mounds bar.
Taste is too much coconut for me. I couldn't really taste the coffee and chocolate like i could with bourbon aged stouts. If you really like coconut, this may be for you.
Feel is somewhat thin.
Overall ok for one. I bought a 4 pack, so I'll trade or gift 1. Worth a try, but dont buy a case without trying.

For what this is supposed to be it is exceptional. It will not be for everyone though. Someone mentioned it reminded of a coconut doughnut and I would agree with that. I will say the coconut seems pretty fresh and not artificial. Has a lot of Malibu Rum to the aroma (Disclaimer: Last time I had Malibu Rum was about 1990.)

Solid stout as the base but not an immense stout or overbearing stout.

The body is rich and creamy. Slighty boozy but in a good way. Would never guess 11% ABV...seems more like 8-9%.

I love coconut and love imperial stouts and like rum so this seemed like a natural for me and it hits the marks.

I'd spring for this again. Heck of a treat and unique.

Cola brown with a fizzy tan head that dies quickly, leaving a bubbling, soda-like surface.

This smells like sun tan lotion, no joke--it starts with shea butter and fresh coconut, developing into vanilla yogurt, a little sassafras and hints of spiced rum.

Taste is less ostentatious, with touches of root beer, toasted coconut, and a noticeable rum presence, much like a pina colada, dusted with baker's cocoa. It improves greatly as it warms, with a little nutty, dark chocolate.

Medium body, thickening as it warms, with a substantial thick fizz that gives it a little more body, finishing slightly chewy, semi-dry with a slight burn.

Nose and flavour are loaded with coconut. Curious to know what form of coconut was used as it is surprisingly strong but doesn't come across as synthetic. Flavour pairs insanely well with the base beer and the rum barrel aging adds a bit of sweetness, candied sugar undertones and some boozy heat. This could easily be turned into slushy form and enjoyed in a tropical location.

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 10/3/16, had 11/27/16.

Pours a dark brown, mostly opaque, with a half inch head and some foamy lacing. The smell is strong coconut, malt, vanilla, light chocolate, some cocoa, toffee, a general spicy aroma. Didn't notice any rum or oak. The taste also leads with the coconut- almost as strong as the nose, rum- more as it warms, malt, light milk chocolate, dates, caramel, light oak. A light bitterness throughout, light spices. Smooth, well carbonated, a decent body but a little thin for the style.

Great use of coconut (wondering what form of coconut), great aroma and good flavor. One of the best variants, but like all of them, the body is thinner than it should be. This is good and enjoyable, but a higher price point for a 4 pack and a lot of places were selling singles only.

The aroma is chocolate, coconut, rum, dark fruit.
Taste is big on coconut, chocolate, booze, rum, brown sugar and a bit of dark fruit.
Mouthfeel is medium and sticky.
Really good.

Brief Review*:

O: Out of all the bottled Dragon's Milk variants thus far, this is probably #2 for me, just after Vanilla Chai. Still lacking, as with all DM beers, is a good mouthfeel. This is just as thin and watery as I expected. But the flavors are nice. The coconut can be a bit strong and maybe slightly artificial at times, but for the most part it's very tasty. Another solid effort from NH, but just didn't blow me away.

Recommendation: One of the stronger variants in the DM lineup, I'd grab one if you see it.

*Trying something new. It's for when I want to get some quick thoughts down, but don't want to go into too much detail. Longer reviews will be saved for more notable releases.

No real head. But huge coconut smell and flavor. Reminds me of a coconut doughnut. It could be a little thicker imo. But overall a great beer. I think they nailed the flavor they were going for.

Poured 12oz bottle into chalice. Color is a dark coffee brown color with a 1.5 finger tan head, with some lacing on the glass. It has a big coconut aroma with some chocolate notes. Nice malt base make for a very good aroma and flavor that is very much an almod joy candy bar. It is sweet, but in a good way. It has a medium and creamy body with a bit of alcohol that fades when it warms. Let it warm to about 55 for maximum enjoyment. Overall this is super tasty and you should buy it if you enjoy coconut.

12 oz. bottled 10/03/16

Pours black with a creamy dark tan foam head. Smells like huge tropical coconut, rum, oak barrel, marshmallow, sweet vanilla, chocolate, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like tropical coconut, rum, oak barrel, marshmallow, sweet vanilla, chocolate, caramel, molasses, brown sugar, with floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy with moderate carbonation. Overall a real nice coconut rum barrel aged imperial stout.

A unique take on Dragon's Milk. Big coconut and spiced rum on the nose. Flavor is almost offensively strong at first, reminiscent of bad college coconut rum drinks, but as it warms up, it mellows out fantastically. Smooth, soft and very tasty. My favorite Dragon's Milk variant to date.

Purchased a single 355ml bottle from Kelly's liquors.
A - Hard pour from the bottle into my Duvel tulip at refrigerator temperature, generated 2 fingers' width of tan head with tight bubbles. Spotty lacing noticed around the glass, and the head receded into a thin ring over a duration of 5 minutes. Swirling the liquid regenerated the head. While the pour looked dark brown coming out of the bottle, once it settled in the glass, it was opaque black.
S - Well, they weren't kidding when they said coconut rum barrel aged. This smells like pina colada beer. Coconut, vanilla, faint pineapple, and sweet rum are at the forefront. Some caramel, and milk chocolate noticed as well. Surprisingly no roasted malt comes through.
T - Sweet coconut and rum noticed right at the outset. Toasted malt and caramel are right behind. More in line with a brown ale sort of malt character as opposed to a stout. Very nice.
F - Medium and a bit thin for the style. Perhaps the only weak aspect of the beer.
O - Definitely a must-buy especially considering the price point of $4.99 for a single. I'm more comfortable classifying this a strong ale, or an imperial brown as opposed to a stout.

Aroma is a bit thin and weak; some oak, chocolate, and vanilla, along with toasted coconut.

The blend on the palate is excellent; I would not immediately guess rum barrels, as the flavor blends well with the coconut naturally.

Vanilla cream, chocolate, and oak round out the profile.

On the first sip and the last sip, you tast coconut. Don't tast any rum barrel. A lot of fancy reviews, however, it's coconut tast, from start to finish. Not a bad tast, just coconut. I tasted a 12 oz bottle.

A - Pours black with a thin tan head. Nice amount of soap lacing.

S - Aroma is coconut and rum.

T - The taste follows the aroma. Heavy coconut, vanilla, dark chocolate and rum.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Soft mouthfeel with smooth crisp finish.

O - Another nice addition to the Dragons Milk family. The coconut is the star of the show with the rum barrel adding a nice light spiciness.

Black with a little brown to it. Light tan head.

Aroma: strong rum and coconut aroma. Toffee.

Taste: rum is very noticeable and warming. One of the best if not best rum barrel aged beers I've had. Slight roasted and chocolate notes.

Feel: medium body, silky, fantastic.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip

L: Inky black pour. Thin brown head that falls quickly. Lacing is better than anticipated.

S: Coconut rum.. booze.. coconut rum. Did I mention coconut?

T/F: Rich and boozy. Coconut hits first and compliments the roasted stout character. Earthy and a bit spicy. The rum hits mid-swig and really ups the booze-factor. Body is medium.. a little creamy. Very warming and tingly on the tongue. Finish is bittersweet and it leaves a wisp of coconut.

O: Delicious and boozy... a bit straightforward, but it delivers on what the name promises. Coconut rum and a big stout... together as they were apparently meant to be.

Best Dragon's Milk variant I've had... the coconut shines on the nose, while the rum takes the lead on taste. Nothing harsh about it, its big but approachable. Feel is medium to full with some creaminess... overall, this one is a winner and I'd love to grab some more!

I was out of town when this dropped, thanks Andre for saving me one. Although you do owe me tons for sharing all those great beers with you over the years! 12 oz. bottle.

Pour: black, quiet. Smells like a pina colada mixed with a thin chocolate straw. Not bad.

Dragon’s Milk – Coconut Rum gets a pure “5” for descriptive name. EXTREME coconut is welded to a boozy, rum-soaked, sweet malty mess of a stout. Spicing comes on strong mid-palate along with… that’s it. Finish is so boozy it could be used for novocaine; I can barely feel the roof of my mouth. Thin for the series, but that increases the poundability.

Nothing subtle or complex or lightweight about this one. Coconut, rum, malt, done. It feels wrong giving such a simple creature such a high score, but it’s really tasty. Excellent beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Slight finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy patch.

Smell: A sweet and roasty dark malt driven aroma with a big scent of coconut, rum, and chocolate. Big upfront sweet scent of coconut. Barrel scent of rum with some vanilla and oak. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, biscuit, caramel, toffee, and nuts with yeast. Sweet scent of burnt molasses, milk, and syrup. Subtle hints of dark fruit. A very good rich aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a sweet and roasty dark malt driven taste with notes of coconut, rum, and chocolate. Big taste of coconut upfront. Good barrel presence with notes of rum, vanilla, and oak. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, biscuit, smoke, toast, caramel, toffee, and nuts along with some yeast. Sweet taste of burnt molasses along with some lactose milk and syrup. Light undertones of dark fruit. A really great taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, slick, and fairly syrupy. Fairly boozy as expected but its not overwhelming.

Overall: A really great Rum Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. Great mix of coconut, rum, and dark roast flavor. Best variant of Dragon's Milk yet.
