New Holland Dragons Milk Reserve: Mexican Spice Cake Bourbon Barrel Stout, 11% ABV. Pours medium viscosity and black, with a one finger tan head. Nose is chocolate and peppers, taste follows, with a touch of vanilla, not much barrel, some pepper burn and very light bitterness. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Very much like Prairie Bomb, though more peppers. Doesn't really compare to BA Bomb since the barrel is not too notable here.

Brief Review:

O: I think these Reserve vintages are starting to get same-y. This one feels like an attempt to just take a well-liked style and mash it into the Dragon's Milk beer to get people to buy it. It's not well done, it's thin, it's forgettable. It is NOT Prop 2014. There's been some great ones in this series, but this is not one of them.

Recommendation: Worth trying if you love the series, but otherwise, there's way better BA stouts and spiced stouts out there.

Where the bourbon barrel taste of the original Dragon's Milk recipe allows the char of grains to soften and the beer takes a turn for the sweet, the decadent, the chocolate; New Holland's Mexican Spice Cake rendition applies a medley of peppery spice, capsaicin and exotic bite for a balance that's not just welcome as a variety, but somewhat necessary.

Jet black and layered with a dense coffee froth, the bourbon barrel stout shows a viscous impression before rising to greet the nose with coffee, chocolate, walnut and vanilla in a very brownie batter kind of way. A tinge of peppery spice allows those grand impressions of Mexican hot chocolate to register in scent. As the beer's rich malts slather the tongue, the senses are awash with all things chocolate, dessert and coffee.

As the flavors roll across the tongue, the toffee and caramel sweetness relaxes after saturating the tastebuds fully, and then allows the char of espresso, bittersweet chocolate, black walnut and burnt toast to rise. As the spices build on the middle palate, notions of cinnamon and cayenne outweigh the hops and allow for a spicy balance to take hold.

Full in body, the lavishly sweet and creamy ale glides across the tongue like velvet, leaving tracks of simmering spice on the throat. Lightly bittered, the long sweet and spicy aftertaste continues to reward the palate in a highly dessert-like fashion.

Appearance - dark mahogany body with tan head

Smell - chocolate, cinnamon, bourbon, vanilla

Taste - sweetness from the cinnamon and chocolate upfront, bourbon and chili heat on the back end, also hints of vanilla

Mouthfeel - medium bodied and medium carbonation, sweetness from the chocolate and cinnamon upfront, good burn from the chili heat on the back end, bourbon and vanilla also present

Overall - this is a great variant on the base beer for Dragons Milk, I like the integration of all the flavors of the cinnamon, chocolate and chiles. Definitely worth a try

Price point - $5.29/12 oz single

Dark, almost opaque, brown liquid with a reddish tinge creates a one finger, thin head when poured into the middle of the glass. The head leaves quickly with only a trace left behind on the glass. The aroma is filled with hints of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon with some smoky peppers. The taste is sweet with cinnamon and heat from the peppers. There is a good amount of bourbon, chocolate and vanilla present toward the end. It is a nicely carbonated beer that feels creamy as the bubble explode in your mouth. Really good beer with a good balance of sweet and heat.
