I picked up a bottle of New Holland Brewing's Dragons Milk Reserve: Mexican Spice Cake Bourbon Barrel Stout for $4.00. I'm always down to try a new variation of Dragons Milk and I'm interested to see how this one turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2017 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks ok, it's very similar to the original label and it's not the most eye catching. It poured a dark black color that didn't let any light come through and it had a fingers worth of tan bubbly head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left some small spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with a nice spiced aroma being the first to show up and it imparts some cinnamon and general spice aroma that goes into some dark fruits which impart some raisin and plum like aroma. Up next comes the bourbon barrels which impart some light bourbon and woody aromas with a little bit of noticeable alcohol aroma showing up in the background. Up next comes the malts which impart some dark malt, roasted malt, light chocolate, and sweet malt aromas. This beer has a pretty nice aroma, all the aspects work well together.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but it's lighter and more unbalanced and it starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the fruity flavors being the first to show up and it still imparts some dark fruit aspects, but this time it has more of a brighter cherry aspect to it and it's followed by the spices which are much lighter than they were in the aroma and they only show up a little. Up next comes the bourbon barrels which is also on the lighter side and it's followed by a little bit of noticeable alcohol that's a little warming and it's followed by the malts which impart all the same aspects that they did in the aroma and they dhow up just as much. On the finish there's a lower amount of medium bitterness and it's slightly watery with some malty and light bourbon barrel flavors showing up in the aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but I was hoping the spices would show up more.

M- A little smooth, not too cloying, fairly crisp, on thicker side of being medium bodied with a higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is nice and it works well with this beer, but it could be a little thicker.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and it's a pretty solid example of the style, it's not bad, but I found almost all the aspects to be a little rough around the edges. This beer had ok drinkability, one is enough for me. What I like the most about this beer is the appearance and aroma, to me those are easily the highlights of this beer. What I like the least about this beer was the thinner body and the fact that the mexican spices didn't show up more. I don't think I would get this beer again, but I wouldn't turn one down and I would recommend it if you want a dragons milk with just a little bit of spice. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it and I think with a little more work on the taste, body and drinkability and this could be a pretty good beer. It's not a favorite beer from New Holland and it's just a little above average for the style. Nice job guys, but with a little more work this could be a pretty good beer.

Pours dark brown. Foamy, tan, short head fades fast to a ring.

Smells bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, light dark fruit, roasted malt and alcohol.

Tastes chocolate, cinnamon, roasted malt and bourbon hints. Followed by pepper, pepper heat and light vanilla. Finish is Semi sweet with chocolate and pepper heat linger. Medium body and fizzy medium carbonation.

From bottle to KBS glass. Typical DM look, dark and opaque with a thin collar of bubbles. Aromas of vanilla, oak, rich cocoa, some booze, and something roasty. Flavors are dark chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, oak char, cinnamon, and just the smallest amount of chilies. Not a lot of burn, which is nice. Decent variation, but not worth the price difference.
