Catching up on some notes from last fall... I treated myself to several chalices and pints (it was never served in consistant glassware) for just $3 a pop at Maduro but never quite grew to love this beer. I’m just not that into most barrel aged monsters.

Appearance: Ominous dark claret-brown body with a decent sized beige head. Lasting lace.

Aroma: Loads of vanilla, just heaps and heaps. Plenty of wood and booze too. Some dark red fruits are present but sweet, sugar, booze and vanilla rule the day.

Taste: Bourbon, vanilla, boozey dark fruit, oak. Pretty over powering.

MF: full bodied, chewy, pungent, warm, and intimidating

Drinkability: not that good for me. It gets difficult to finish when it warms and the booze is too much after a while.

on tap at Maduro, during happy hour

appearance: roughly 12oz pour in an oversized St Bernardus glass that I must somehow "borrow" next time I am there. Big dark garnet body, light beige head...lacing is adequate and can be easily revived by circulating the brew. nice and frothy. Nice

smell: Vanilla/oak comes through immediately in the aroma, rich bourbon-boozy aromas, sugary, sweet ripe red fruit...very different from the standard pilgrims dole

taste: I'm not one for fads but the whole oak aging scene is still working for me. This beer totally transforms from what I remember. Nice wheat wine base, totally overshadowed by the bourbon/vanilla/oak effects from the aging process. boozy dark red fruits, caramel, some barleywine characteristics

mouthfeel: medium-full body, boozy, rich, strong

drinkability: its good but its a tough finish

I got this at crunchies in east lansing, mi. i have not been there in years and man they have expanded there beer selection in a good direction. (see my crunchies beerfly)

was served a hazy deep copper over sized mug (think it was 24oz) with a off white head that lasted about an hour then it was a fine lace.

the aroma was just wounderful, very rich, burbon, oak, vanilla

the flavor is very rich, vanilla, carmelized malt, burbon, hopsack.

man this is an awesome beer.
