still not a ton of sour stout types out there in the world, its a weird subgenre, but this was a fun one to share with some new friends. its got cherries in it, which seem tart as well, and the beer overall isnt too sour to drink, so there is a neat dynamic complexion to it, an acidic double down that really works, and enough bitter and earthy dark roasted grain to keep this grounded and even somewhat balance. it smells sweeter than it is, like chocolate covered raisins and cherry cordial, some lemony character to the sourness as well, but its dried and more refined in the taste to me, the acidity is clean and doesnt really break down the body, the fruit is more natural not and nicely proportioned, and it doesnt linger too long after each sip. i was glad to be sharing it, even one bottle seems like a big dose of this, but its unique and it grows on me as i sip on it. clean pucker, bright cherry flavor coming through the dark grain, hints of tobacco and port wine, and some bitterness to finish. a little light on the carbonation but the beer isnt heavy, especially in the context of some of the massive stouts we drank in this session. a fun one to try, definitely something a little different, and a bit cleaner to me than some of the other new holland sours i can remember drinking over the years.

Near black with slightly pinkish tan head. Interesting and strong aroma of tart lemon cherry chocolate with some prune, which is better than I expected. Flavor more or less follows, with what I would describe more as a cherry sour with chocolate rather than a sour cherry stout. Tart to moderately sour. Pretty sweet with a moderately thick mouthfeel. Something different definitely worth trying.

And now for my second beer in my New Super Michigan Beer Bowl Sunday (Week 728)! Hang on, 'cause it's going to be a wild ride today.

From the Bottle: "Cherry*Roasty*Tart"; "Proudly Brewed in Holland[,] Michigan".

I was not totally enamored of the Apple Rhubarb (!) Gose, but as I explained, I am a self-described, self-avowed hophead & as such, I generally eschew both sweets and tarts/sours. That said, its base beer was of the usually tart Gose style anyway, so it all worked out. Here, I was faced with a Sour Stout, but I was mindful that it was NOT to be reviewed as a Stout throughout.

I began by Pop!ping the cap & performing a slow, gentle C-Line pour. It acted in a very Stout-like fashion, creating a pseudo-cascade that formed just over two fingers of fizzy, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with modest retention, quickly falling to wisps. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose smelled like Bell's Cherry Stout, a proven favorite of mine, which is brewed with sour Montmorency cherries from western Michigan. I first got turned onto Michigan cherries in the Navy when someone shared preserves from their hometown of Traverse City or thereabouts. It was a revelation & now, I cannot brook sweet cherries. I am sure that New Holland likewise used state-grown cherries for this one! Mmm. Mouthfeel was a little light, which might have been a problem if I were reviewing a Stout, but I can make allowances for an AWA. The taste was not as strong & pronounced as on the nose, but it was still definitely of sour cherries. Sofa. So fa, so good. The problem arose when it was neither overly puckering (tart) nor jaw-hinge tingling (sour). It was lacking the Ooomph! that would really mark it as an AWA. 8=( It was unquestionably a Stout brewed with sour cherries, but was it in the territory of the elite AWAs? I would have to say not. One thing that I have done in the past with Bell's Cherry Stout is to age it, although I am unsure that such is recommended. This really sharpens the tartness. allowing the cherry flavor to become quite assertive. I now wonder how this might fare with some age … Finish was dry, tart, slightly sour, but I just kept wishing for more. YMMV.

Look: Dark tank head, turned to thin film and lacing after a moment or two, pitch black/brown opaque body
Smell: Roasty, tart, and cherry notes first and foremost, otherwise a bit of sweetness
Taste: Shocking lactic tartness hits you upon initial sipping, then you get some cherry sweetness and chocolatey notes. Tartness follows through the entire sip but not nearly as shocking.
Feel: Low carbonation levels, pretty slick and heavy feeling, coats your mouth as it goes down. Refreshing sipper beer.
Overall: Interesting flavor combination. Let it warm up for sure.

I guess I didn't read this right I thought it was just a wild sour ale but it turned out to be a pretty decent sour Stout not as sour as the honey ginger but it still had a little bit of red wine and Cherry taste. Would not get it again but it was still interesting

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/25/2018. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big sour/tart/tangy red/black cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, currant, red/green apple, melon, red grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with light notes of pepper, smoke, char, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of cherries, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and moderate dark/roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sour/tart/tangy red/black cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, currant, red/green apple, melon, red grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, and toasted dark bread; with light notes of pepper, smoke, char, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang; light yeast spiciness, and roast bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy red/black cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, peach, plum, pear, currant, red/green apple, melon, red grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, light leather/funk/vinegar, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and moderate dark/roast/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/tartness and tangy fruit balance; with no puckering, astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering tart/sourness and tangy fruit. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy, acidic/tangy/tannic, and slightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol for 6.7%. Overall this is an excellent sour stout. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of cherries, fruity/funky/acidic yeast, and moderate dark/roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly acidic/tangy/tannic/drying finish, not overly lactic. Awesome balance of authentic juicy cherries and Brett/bacteria complexity; with a nice stout malt backbone, without being overly thick/roasty against the cherries and sour notes. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive style example as expected of the series so far.

This is my second to third sour stout and have to say this is okay but was hoping for more sourness as well as greater tones of roasted malts and chocolate. Instead it's slightly sour with a metallic flavoring and subtle notes of chocolate along with dark cherries which was the highlight but wasn't enough to win me over. Okay beer but not executed as well as I had hoped.
