Bottle poured into a pint glass

A: brown... Obviously. Pours a nice tan head with lacing that slowly crawls down the side of the glass. Tough to make a better looking brown ale

S: dry roasted chocolate, smoke,

T: very pleasant smokiness lots of chocolate very slightly toasted bready and earthy

M: only nitpicking flaw it's a little thin. But nice but of spiciness on the finish

O: definitely my favorite winter seasonal so far. Fits perfectly with the season and as far as brown ales go - this can't be beat. Vastly underrated. Resembles a porter without as much roasted malts. New holland killed it with this one.

I've got to disagree with my friend from Georgia and the review from earlier today. This is absolutely one of my favorite browns, hands down. I've always thought of the brown ale style as a gateway beer to other craft beers. I started my own conversion from mass produced domestic swill, to browns, and then moved onto on to IPA's, Stouts, and various other craft brew styles. I still make my way back to browns once the calendar turns to November, the snow starts to fly, and the weather takes a turns for the worse. Crack a Cabin Fever and hunker down in front of the fire for a long, cold Winter.

Appearance: Dark caramel brown, poured from a bottle or on tap (stop by New Holland, great food and atmosphere) into a pint glass. Forms a nice brown head with slowly dissipates and leaves some generous lacing.

Smell: subtle chocolate aroma

Taste: Yes, this is what a brown should be, Very drinkable, not overpowering, with a beautiful malt finish.

Mouthfeel: Exactly like a brown should be. A subtle creamy feel that doesn't leave a strong aftertaste.

Overall: Great beer to drink on the river while Steelhead fishing in Northern Michigan. Also one of the best logos in the business. Make sure and get a sticker for your drift boat.

The head is frothy, foamy and thick on top a rich brown chocolatey coloring.

The scent has dry cocoa powder notes, caramel malts and nice roasted qualities.

The taste has a lot of character with dry chocolate and roasted or charred malts. There is some hop bitterness near the end and the roasted flavor stays on the palate. There's a wash of water about two thirds into the swallow that knocks the score down a bit.

Overall, I see a lot of good in this brown ale and enjoyed it quite a bit.
