Poured moderately hard from a bottle into a snifter glass, forming just a finger of brown head. Very nice rum smell, not overpowering like some other rum aged stouts. Taste is similar, with the stout background to a primary rum taste with a bit of chocolate and coconut in the background. No sign of hazelnut, which is a little disappointing, but it's still very good if you like rum. Medium bodied with light to moderate carbonation. Probably the best rum aged stout I've had.

Bottle.
Tan head. Dark brown color.
Brown sugar, chocolate, coconut, and rum. Lots of sweetness, some cherries. This just doesn’t work. Too boozey. This is just a mess.

an extremely generous gift from a friend, i have loved as much of this series as i have been able to enjoy, but few and far between in recent years. this is a real special version, i love these reserve variants. this is aged in what must have been freshly emptied rum barrels, its got that raw sugar cane character coming through the deep roasty malt base, molasses and brown sugar too, but not absurdly sweet to drink, there is good depth and balance here, coffee notes and a hint of smoke too, great layers around the rum element, and tons of wood as well, very mature to me. i do smell a little oxidation in here, very faint, and it doesnt disrupt the flavor at all. the hazelnut is natural to me, well dosed too, just a highlight, a thread of earthy decadence through it, and boy oh boy is it sure compatible with the rum on this. the coconut is also kind of subtle, toasted to me, wrapped up in vanilla oak notes and dark chocolate character from the grain, all so cohesive and complimentary. its chocolate forward too, but nothing forced, and it accents the grain rather than runs it over. im shocked how this isnt all that sweet to drink even with so much rum to it, and also how the alcohol isnt all that hot for what it is, this is smooth and pretty mellow honestly, balanced and well refined, and not even all that viscous either, the carbonation helps with that. overall a wildly impressive beer, obviously this base lends itself well to all kinds of treatments, but this is among the best of them i have had the pleasure of drinking. huge thanks to my homie for hooking this up for me, definitely a special treat! also among the best hazelnut beers i can recall ever tasting. bravo!

12 oz. bottle poured into a wine glass. Bottle 01/20....I think, bit hard to read the dot dash. Pours pretty black with a cap of tan foam and offers decent retention.
Aroma originally offers a blast of rum spinning off from the bottle. Then settling in to some cocoa notes, some hazelnut as the foam settles and then some barrel notes emerge. Definite notes of ethanol emanate from the glass.
Taste is smoother than anticipated with spice and chocalate, bit of muddled rum and sugar on the finish. Body is light in a relative sense and not cloying at all. Still, the ABV is more cloaked on the taste than the nose so there must be some residuals lurking in the background.
Overall a fairly easy quaff for what it is. Not richly complex, light barrel notes, maybe a bit rum dosed.

Pours black with almost no head at all. Aroma is coconut with some roasted chocolate notes. Taste is dark chocolate and coconut and tasty, not much rum flavor here. Feel is a bit light for a big stout, but still good. Overall it's a decent stout and worth a sample.

L -- Pours a deep brown body with total clarity that actually allows some light through when held up. Scant finger of light tan head that immediately dissipates to nothing
S -- Rum, caramel, coconut, butterscotch, milk chocolate, hint of herbal vegetal hop. Quite a lot of wet rum character. Unfortunately the rum smells a bit cheap
T -- Oh geez, it's just all cheap tasting rum here. Can barely make out the chocolate let alone the hazelnut or coconut. This is actually really quite unpleasant (although I'll still drink the whole bottle, honestly quite surprised anyone would drain pour this)
F -- Big mouthfeel, medium carb. Pretty hot and lacking that velvety BA stout character, but nothing too offensive either
O -- Just about given up on DM reserve variants at this point. They're just so hit or miss, and aren't that cheap despite their availability
60/100

Four pack copped from Wine Rack in Millburn. Pours a jet-black ebony hue with a tantalizing amount of frothing and a full-bodied five-finger head. Assertive aroma loaded with notes of coconut and rum. Great stuff. Recommended.

L-Black with some ruby highlights and nice pillowy chocolate head.
S-A lot of rum on the aroma. A bit boozy as expected. A touch of nuts as well as chocolate.
T-Rich and decadent but not too over the top. Straddles that line with strong impressions of rich milk chocolate and rum. Not much in the way of hazelnut or coconut.
F-Really smooth and creamy...doesn't drink hot at all but certainly boozy.
O-This is good but was hoping for more on the hazelnut and coconut. Still a great drinking heavyweight offering.
