Pour: On draft at The Jeffery in NYC. Poured in to a tulip glass. Appearance: Black. Thin off color head which reduces quickly. Lacing present on the sides of the glass. Aroma: Resin-like and earthy notes. Very mellow and approachable. Taste: Roasted coffee notes. Subtle hops and earthy like flavors are present. Aftertaste: slightly burnt coffee on the back end. Overall: Easy drinking and pretty straight forward. Good. 3.31 out of 5.

Micro Review: I've only had a handful of CDAs / Black IPAs and this one struck me as a little more malty than some with a noticeable chocolate presence. Combined with the cirtusy hops it made me thing of a chocolate orange smashed into an IPA. Quite tasty and very drinkable. Was less than 2 months old, and it tasted like a hoppy stout to me. :)

Got in a trade with my friend Eric.
A- Pours black with a small tan head that settles to a nice cap.
S - Smells like an IPA, all piney and citrusy.
T - These black ales are always difficult for me to describe. This is a little smokey, a little sweet and a little hoppy. Well balanced combination of flavors.
M - Medium mouth feel, a little creamy, med-low carbonation.
O - This is quite good and very drinkable.

L - pours black with a mocha head. Course bubbles. Fluffy and quivers ever so slightly when jostled.

S - caramel malts. Smells black! Licorice. Minty.

T - smokey and metallic. Some light fruity blast with a lingering Mike n Ike aftertaste. Peasant sweetness with chocolately orange.

F - light-bodied. Dances quietly on the tongue. Drinkable.

O - solid black ale. Has a distinct twist that separates it from other like styles.

12oz. can into a Grrrz teku. Shared by schen9303.

Pours a .5 finger light coffee colored head with great retention. Beer is thin but pitch black. Lacing is stringy and spotty with excellent stick. A fantastic looking beer.

Nose is tropical fruit, chocolate, liquorice and roasted malt. Dark malt flavors linger in the background with a prominent, fruity hop bite in the front. Solid.

Opens chocolate, roasted malt, smoke and cocoa powder. A light, citrussy hop bitterness in the middle with more liquorice, roast and smoke on the finish and aftertaste. Pretty typical.

Light bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth in the mouth and goes down slick and a touch watery. Finishes slightly dry with a lingering, slightly grainy aftertaste. Decent.

Other Half has a great reputation with IPAs. However, this Black Ale just doesn't cut it for me. Decent for the style but it takes something outstanding for me to like a beer in this category.

The best Black IPA I've ever had. Space aroma is full of Bountiful American hops, citrusy, floral and resine. Taste follows up on the nose almost identically, citrus and resin. The faintest light roast character follows up, but its faint and provides more in the way of roast flavor then it does any bitterness, that's all hops. Would drink thing again in a heartbeat.

First, let me state my problem with this beer...it's only 12oz can and not 16oz.

Looks great, not pitch black. Aroma is of a great DIPA with earthy pine and citrus with slightest hint of roasted malt. Taste is similar but on the backend there is more roasted malt that goes so well with the hops and bitterness. Feel is not to thick or heavy with a crisp carbonation.

Most "black" IPA are just hoppy stouts to me. This is truely a good DIPA with just the right about of dark malts. One of, if the best, of this type that I've had

A - Pitch black pour with a nice thick toffee colored ring.

S - Balanced citrus overtones on top of dark chocolate roasted malt, somewhat balanced and a little muted after it starts to breathe.

T - Lots of resiny spicy citrus tropical fruit: orange, mandarin orange, sweet pink grapefruit, mango with very light malt base underneath.

M - Full medium body with light carbonation, slippery.

O - Not a fan of dark ales but this is one definitely worth seeking out.

12oz can into a red wine glass.

Appearance: Pours very dark chestnut, opaque but for the edges. Decent offwhite head and retention.

Smell: I bought this for the Summit, Simcoe, and Columbus hops, all known for earthy, dank, pungent flavor and aroma. The smell says I made a good choice. Dark malts very muted, really not much malt in the nose but there's sort of a... flatness, like a wall put up against deeper hop aroma by the malt. Or maybe the aroma just isn't that pronounced either way, but what's there is great.

Taste: If the aroma doesn't go far enough, the taste makes up for it. Waves of pungent Summit/Simcoe earthiness, with that big forceful Columbus punch. Also, you can taste that it's a black IPA; it's not a stout, but there's some husky, almost woody flavor coming from whatever dark or roasted malts they used. As the craft beer community discovered when "Black IPAs" exploded as a trend a few years ago, the combination of those flavors and big hops works.

This is an interesting beer; well thought out. The malt gives a nice edge to the booziness... it's like it absorbs it, or plays on a palate trained to expect a bit more alcohol when the roasted malt flavors show up. Meanwhile, the hops are seriously dialed up. I came in with high expectations because these 3 are more or less my favorite hops (love the fruity/flowery/citrusy profiles of some others, but I'll take this violent marijuana flavor any day), and I'm not disappointed. The hops are the star, and they carry every sip.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. A bit dull but for a nice dry finish. Good, but not outstanding like the flavor. I'm not really complaining.

Overall: Awesome Fall/Winter beer. It's like a chilly afternoon among pine trees and clouds of weedsmoke. Not something I'm particularly familiar with, but in the form of a beer I'm all for it.

Cans shared by Barry the other night.

It pours a dark but not deep black, with a half inch head and a good amount of sticky lacing.

Smells like hoppy citrus, dank earthiness, roasted malt, and coffee.

This is definitely one of the best, if not the best black IPA's that I've had. It's got a really nice citrusy hop flavor, some grapefruit and mango, with a nice intense burnt pine flavor, and a roasted malt character that's lighter than the typical black IPA.

This is medium bodied, with a fluffy creamy mouthfeel, and a moderate level of carbonation.

Simply put, one of the best black IPAs yet. More goodness from OH.

My first black ipa ever somehow. The nose is great, a nice blend of roast and some citrus hops. The taste is spot on the nose too. You get hit with a firm bit of roasty goodness, along with a nice hoppy bite and the finish is nice and bitter. Between heavy roast and what I presume to be the Colombia hops, the finish is definitely my favorite part. Nice bit of carbonation with a creamy mouth feel. Doug is a winner for sure.

From a can dated 9/15/15. Dark brown pour with a thin, quickly fading tan head. Nose is roasted malts and hops. Taste follows nose almost exactly, with just a hint of sweetness on the finish. Great mouthfeel. An excellent example of a style I don't really love.

growler filled a week ago at the can release kast weekend. another great beer...really tasteful blend of hops and roastiness. the feel is super soft and silky. pushes the boarders of black ipa and hoppy stout to me. not crazy for black up as but this one makes me second guess that sentiment.

A 32 oz growler from Dicicco's in Ardsley. A super winter ale this Black IPA is actually a very dark, clear brown with a light brown head. Slow fade, nice lace. Nose is a hop bomb that has pine, tropical fruit and a bit of very faint solvent alcohol sweetness. Roasted grain bill underneath. Taste is Hoppy up front with the pine and tropics flowing to a grapefruit bite in the finish. Charred grains give notes of coffee and molasses dipped dark bread. Booze is not anywhere it be found. Feel is pretty light and crisp for the style. Velvet carbonation. Drinks like a champ. No real sign of the abv so drink with caution. Me likey

1/2 growler filled at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY

Pours stout black under a long lasting med. khaki cap. Leaves some spotted high lacing.

Roasted malt as well as hopped up nose.

Full flavor Black IPA. Roasted malts and solid hop presence in full force.

Tasty and highly enjoyable. Well done and well worth a try

I had this on Tap at the 4th Ave Beer Bar in Brooklyn. Poured into a pint glass, dark and rich, with a full head. Malty aroma, with a hint of hops, which is expressed on the first sip. The roasted malt flavor is very tasty without being overwhelming. Excellent example of an American Black Ale!

The beer offers medium roasted malt, grapefruit along with a touch of rubbery hops. A very clean black IPA with great roast and hop balance.

Another wonderful hoppy beer brewed by Other Half.

One of the best, if not the best Black IPA. It hit all the right notes, had a really pleasant nose and not too much roast or bitterness. Color me impressed.

Wow, this is excellent! This is one of the best black IPAs I have ever had. Had this one last year, but this years version tastes better. Nice roasty taste, awesome finish.

One of the more underrated Other Half beers.
