Nice deep orange with a frothy white head on tap that quickly recedes to some thick lacing and a minuscule layer on top. Strong resin aroma with rind and caramel in the background. Flavor follows with aroma, adding pine and a stronger citrus component. Resin is very present on the tongue, medium feel. One of the few beers I've rated straight numbers across the board, but that's this beer to me - above average, but nothing that takes over the top. Seems to be a great lesson in Cascade hops, though.

Served 39F from the counter pressure growler into a 12 ounce tulip.

Decent color for a DIPA, but not typical for Other Half. No chill haze or cloudiness. Very clean and clear light bronze yellow. Looks like honey and victory malts behind the two row.

Nose is very typical for Other Half ales. Slightly subdued and conservative. Not a hop bomb at all. Some slight bitter melons, honeydew cantaloupe, citrus. I know how much Other Half loves to brew single hop beers, and I think that Cascade, one of my favorite hops, really needs some citra or amarillo in the boil and dry hop to make the cascade shine.

Taste is very smooth for 9.3%. No diacetyl, but I also don't get much maltiness or hop bite. This could be a burnt out palette, but this ale just isn't that exciting compared to my past experiences with Other Half. Taste profile is honeydew melon, nectarines and gumballs. I keep sipping this looking for more tasting notes, like maybe a dank resin or a bready malt, but it's just not there. This beer is dry for the most part with a little bit of sweetness up front that quickly fades.

The mouthfeel is slightly thin in my opinion. I don't like sticky syrupy double IPA's but some more texture would be nice, and Magic Green Nugget's obviously is on the thin side for a higher ABV% DIPA.

This is actually a good ale, and I might be nitpicking a bit because it's taste and texture are completely different from what I am used to from Other Half. Seemed like they skimped on the hops and grains, and maybe started using brite tanks to clarify their beer. It's certainly a step forward in terms of production logistics, but I wouldn't purchase it again unless they changed up the recipe a little by adding more hops and thickening up the body.

As far as what other commercially available beer this reminds me of? Sierra Nevada Hoptimum. Wasn't a huge fan of Hoptimum, and this is obviously much better and much more fresh.

I will update this review after I drink my second growler next week, and perhaps the flavors will meld better, which seems to be common for some Other Half ales.

poured from a can purchased yesterday into a tulip

L - a darker clearer orange than most OH IPAs, short head fades quickly

S - nice but subdued aroma, nothing really stands out, bready malts and nectarine-like hops, none of the dankness one expects from OH

T - again nothing really stands out, nice balance, clean taste, not too sweet or too bitter, standard grapefruit/pine kind of flavor

F - medium to low carbonation, medium thickness, a slightly unwelcome burn accompanies the finish

O - This is an old-school IPA along the lines of Finest Kind or Sierra Nevada's stuff, and within that category it really excels. If that's what you like this could be your favorite beer. But it's not the kind of hazed-up juice-bomb that gets the highest ratings from most people, including me.

From 03/11/16 notes. 14 oz. pour in a snifter at Gingerman in NYC.

Pours a somewhat clear deep orange-amber color with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident. Little bitter, very strong, with lots of resin, pine, citrus hops, and grapefruit. medium body and moderate carbonation.

Overall another good DIPA from OH. Strong but good with a lot of cascade hops to it. Worth checking out if you like their beers.

This might be my least favorite offering from OH. Perhaps I just dislike Segal Ranch High Oil Cascades. I don't know what it is about this beer, but it's too sweet and I get sweet melon (cantaloupe/honey dew not watermelon), cedar (woody note), and rotten lemon / pine sol flavor. As with all OH DIPA's it drinks like half its actual ABV, but overall I've really not enjoyed drinking this beer.

Medium-pale gold with a light haze, white foam head piled high on top; lots of lace draped behind... Aromas of orange, grapefruit, and citrus fruits covered in shellac... On the tongue, orangey citrus oils are immediate, bringing sticky pith and peel with an undercoat of resin... Medium-weight, bitterness and sweetness about on par, appropriately slightly chewy with a bit of dank stickiness on the finish... 5/19/17 canning

L - pours a spectral haunting orange. Opaque but also translucent. A bit of duality in the color here. Looks light like it has a lower density than water. Hard to explain.

S - sweet, sugary orange candy. White bready malts. A touch of grape, but a lot of it is nostalgic candy from my youth. Some cardboard thrown in for good measure.

T - tangerine candy... candy is all the rage with this beer. From lifesavers to those strange grape "champagne" gummies I found in Hong Kong, this beer is sweet and soft, delicate, but potent. Tortilla chips and resiny hops. Deceptively bitter as the face numbs and melts further with each sip.

F - drinkable and easy on the heft, but velvety like slipping on a fresh pair of silk boxers.

O - I want to say this is west coast style, but it's more like Brooklyn coast (does Brooklyn have a coast?). It's hoppy and sweet and malty, but exudes a bit of "magic" that makes it unmistakeably Other Half.
