Had a bunch of buds over the other night and we ripped through a dozen other half stouts side-by-side for science.

The list included:
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged W/ Coconut, Vanilla & Cardamom)
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged With Vanilla)
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon-Barrel With Coffee Hazelnut And Cocoa Nibs)
In Absentia Luci - Red Wine Barrel
In Absentia Luci - Rum Barrel Aged
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Apple Brandy Barrel Aged)
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Rum Barrel Aged)
Cane Life (bourbon Barrel Aged Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Cocoa, Cinnamon And Ancho Peppers Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Coconut And Coffee Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Tahitian Vanilla Version)

The Absentias were hit and miss...this one was right in the middle. Not amazing, but not bad. The coffee and chocolate were most noticeable here and added nicely to the brews but didn't shake the earth.

Picked this up with the other In Abesentia Luci brews that were released recently by Other Half. All of them so far were thick, rich, heavy, and smooth sippers and this one fit that bill as well. If only it was a bit colder out to better fit the season for this type of beer!

Loved the pour to this as this beer was the color of dark chocolate with a wonderfully complementary head that was mousse-hued, thick, and full of bubbles of all sizes. Not a strong aroma to this but there was some booze, bitter chocolate, and brandy-barrel sweetness but none of them overpowering. All of those were in the taste along with the cocoa nibs, powder, and dark berry. The coffee was quite hard to find and was present more in the consistency and mouthfeel more than the taste. No doubt that this was a strong beer from start to finish as the alcohol meshed nicely with the flavors and the sticky bourbon that was present in the clean aftertaste, once everything darker faded away.

This was potent but with so much subtle goodness to be had, that was actually a plus when all was said and done. This beer warmed me up a ton but never felt contrived or sticky. It was a joy to savor as it warmed up and was quite possibly the best in the series so far. A must for any Bourbon or Stout enthusiast who would love a mesh between the two styles!

Poured at near room temperature into a 16 oz snifter not sure when it was bottled. Pours a very slick black with a 3 finger light brown head that leaves behind some patches of lace as it slowly settles into a thin layer of brown bubbles.

Smell is roasted expresso, oaky vanilla, char, dark chocolate, hazelnut, and a some bourbon.

Taste follows roastyness upfront coffee, deep dark chocolate, oak, pipe tobacco, char, hazelnut, and a little kiss of bourbon in finish.

Mouthfeel full, almost creamy, moderate carbonation as it should be for BA Stout at 11% ABV, and complex sipper that drinks way to easy.

Overall this thing belongs with all the other world class Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts, world class. Thanks @Rcruz9230 for unexpected treat.

It pours a thick jet black with a big firm tan head that leaves a thick sticky lacing. I don't get much at all on the nose. No bourbon at all. Just a touch of milk chocolate.

The taste is much more complex. Sharp barrel notes open up early on with a nice bit of heat but it's quickly overcome by rich notes of fudge, devil's food cake, snickers, and a bit of dark berry. It borders on being overly sweet, but doesn't quite get there. The finish brings very light oaky vanilla notes.

I honestly don't pick up much of a coffee presence, if any at all. The mouthfeel is nice. Thick and sticky like a big stout should be. Overall, I like it. I was definitely hoping for more of a barrel presence and more coffee notes on a bottle this fresh but it's still a pretty good BA stout.
