Very Good
Cane Life (bourbon Barrel Aged Version)Cane Life (bourbon Barrel Aged Version)
Notes: Collaboration with J. Wakefield Brewing. Cane Life is an imperial stout brewed with cane juice that Wakefield sourced fresh and had it shipped to us straight from Miami. We then bourbon barrel aged the beer for 8 months.

super excited about this guy. never had a wakefield stout, heard good things.

looks alright in the glass, no head. appears a bit watery. average

the nose brings out booze upfront with some bourbon and sugar. ok not amazing but not bad

woa, ok boozy vodka upfront than sugar. than a bit more sugar. stout base comes thru than it ends with a vodka aftertaste. not real bourbon here, strange vodka like alch through out, the cheap kind and lots of sugar. not all that bad in part but they don't blend well at all. real messy

mouthfeel might be a culprit. watery, and oily, like italian dressing. heavy booze

overall if this is what wakefield is making i don't mind missing out. out half is letting em down too. what a bummer. i like the packaging and idea, but at 12% i see no reason fighting through more of a glass of this stuff

Had a bunch of buds over the other night and we ripped through a dozen other half stouts side-by-side for science.

The list included:
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged W/ Coconut, Vanilla & Cardamom)
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon Barrel Aged With Vanilla)
In Absentia Luci (2016 Bourbon-Barrel With Coffee Hazelnut And Cocoa Nibs)
In Absentia Luci - Red Wine Barrel
In Absentia Luci - Rum Barrel Aged
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Apple Brandy Barrel Aged)
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Bourbon Barrel Aged)
We've Been Out There In Orbit (Rum Barrel Aged)
Cane Life (bourbon Barrel Aged Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Cocoa, Cinnamon And Ancho Peppers Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Coconut And Coffee Version)
Cane Life (conditioned On Tahitian Vanilla Version)

The Cane life set in general was a BIG let down. The cinnamon version was the only really good one and like the others...this one was super mediocre. Just heavy and sludgy...in fact the caps had a bunch of residue on them that we noticed after opening. meh.

a pricy and tasty little series of beers, purchase from j wakefield in miami. neat idea for a stout to incorporate cane juice, and the beers are all very distinct. this one though, was without a doubt, our least favorite of the three we grabbed. its totally flat from the bottle, and the mouthfeel is dead, really makes this sweeter and boozier than it needs to be, i was a little disappointed with this aspect. tons of bourbon here, the char and the wood as pungent as the whiskey, and just so much milk chocolate sweetness here too. i expected the cane juice aspect to be somewhat more original and pronounced, different from residual grain sugar, but in this one anyway, it doesnt really come through that way. no denying this is great barrel aged stout, but its unique ingredients are not so well on display here. i actually appreciated this far more after i had the other two, and in the end this may work better as a platform for the additives than it does on its own, which i guess we dont see too often. i found it really sweet, overly boozy, and rather heavy, especially as it warms up. there is a real neat dark grain flavor here, some specialty barley or something, dry and interesting, and thats a neat element to focus on as the rest of the beer wants to run away. solid but overpriced. the vanilla and the mexican cocoa editions were far superior, and i imagine the coconut and coffee would be as well!

Pours black with very little head. Nice lacing. Aroma awesome bourbon notes. Taste deep milk chocolate and bourbonn. No complexity at all. Very simple for a bourbon stout. Mouth feel is very thin. Almost porter. Very nice but too thin to be amazing. Big fan of other half.

Had this side by side with the other two and they are all really thin with a week barrel presence. Not sure how these are rated so high. The vanilla was a little better than the regular and the pepper was a bit better than the vanilla. Very let down with these beers.

Look-Very dark brown, slightest bit of light breaks through when held to the light, zero head even on a rough pour.

Smell-Heavy molasses, some booze, hint of vanilla.

taste-Molasses character flows over into soy sauce levels (a massive turn off for me), The booze is there, along with the faintest touch of vanilla.

Feel- Heavy and oily, no carbonation at all.

Overall-I respect that OH tries to mix it up, and has modestly succeeded on a couple of occasions, but i think its time they realize their strength and stick to it-IPA's, because they make some of the best ones out there and you can't be perfect at everything.

So far the weakest link of the Wakefield-Other Half imperial stout collaborations. Not enough bourbon presence, and a thin mouthfeel to boot. Still drinkable for a 12 percent barrel-aged beer, but far from exciting.
