Poured on tap into a shaker pint at the brewpub.

Deep walnut brown body, opaque nothing getting through with a creamy bit of one finger mocha tan head. Whispy top with a creamy collar which is quite thick actually.

The bouquet just rips of deliciousness. Husky grain, excellent density and chewy thick chocolate notes. Hints of milk and mild vanilla, a touch of coffee like ripped bean just wants to poke out. Fantastic stuff.

Palate comes with a strange thud though. Mouthfeel has some body but comes out with a bit of flatness to it. Good notes of classic char, and milky chocolate in the mid palate, with a matching creamy finish. A big hint of husky grain but also with not enough body to really push the flavors to linger and last.

It's a real solid porter with minor flaws. A hint more depth and this thing would soar.

8 oz. pour out of a growler filled on 05/01/2014, unknown brewing/release date, drank over 30 minutes

A: 3/3 - pitch black coloration - no light shall pass!; initial tannish rocky head settles into a 1/2 finger head that persists throughout the drinking, moderate alcohol legs

S: 9/12 - mostly roasted specialty malts - coffee, chocolate, tobacco - with some background pils breadiness; mild grassy/earthy hop aroma likely instilled from British hops

T: 15/20 - on first taste, there is a moderate roasted malt and hop bitterness that opens the taste buds; this develops into more intense British malt flavors - caramel, toffee and roasted coffee - with some earthy characters; finishes quick and dry with essentially no aftertaste

M: 4/5 - light-to-moderate body; moderate-to-high carbonation - appropriate to style

O: 8/10 - definitely one of the better American stouts/porters to come out of D.C.; I'd put it right next to DC Brau's Penn Quarter Porter for the style; beyond the district though, this is a nice British-style robust porter that is easy to drink and very sessionable with the low ABV with a nice price point/pint or growler fill; definitely recommended at the pub or growler trade

Another win for Right Proper, this is a creamy, medium-thick porter that hits all the right notes a porter should - a bit of chocolate, some earthy, toasted malt flavors, and a smooth, malty, semi-sweet aftertaste. One reviewer said it was an oatmeal stout, and that makes sense - it has that rich, savory, meal-like flavor to it. Recommended!

Dark brown/black with a frothy head. Smells nuttier than the average porter, in addition to typical smells of roasted malts and coffee. The taste was different than I expected as well: it tastes incredibly oaty, in a good way. More oat flavor and creamy oat feel than even many oatmeal stouts as far as I can tell. There's also a good presence of bitter chocolate. Very tasty. The feel is creamy and chewy and pretty thick. A great beer for when you walk into Right Proper on a cold evening.
