Our Russian Imperial Stout is rich, complex and velvety smooth. Boozy without being overpowering, the chocolate and roasted malts take center stage and provide for a full bodies taste experience.

Deep deep brown not quite bordering on black but in that range. Nice pillowy light brown head. Good retention and lacing.

Nose is initially light cocoa/chocolate. As I sift through it there's a bit of a wooden character (there's no barrel involved. It's not that kind of wood). Maybe a bit of light sweet vanilla character. A touch of roast underneath.

Flavour isn't quite as light and sweet as that aroma suggests. Roast and a hint of dry char, but just a hint. The chocolate is almost like a light, dry fudge, but again just a suggestion. Maybe a pinch of toffee. Finishes dark chocolate bitter and gets a slight nudge of coffee, but more in the dark chocolate realm than the coffee. Maybe a touch of citrus from the hopping. It's enjoyable, and has kind of grown on me as I've worked through the glass.

As others have noted, it could stand to be a little thicker/oiler/chewier... something. It's not -thin- per se, there just isn't as much to it as I personally prefer. What is there is heavy carbonation.

I enjoy it. It's not one that's going to haunt my dreams or score a tonne of hype, but I'm enjoying this can and wouldn't turn it down in the future.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a tulip.

Appearance: rich black hue with a finger of frothy tan foam atop; it looks good, if unremarkable.

Smell: sweet malt with a mild roastiness and a hint of fruity complexity. It doesn't have a massive complexity, but it is quite good nonetheless.

Taste: sweetish up front, with some nice dark fruitiness, it finishes with an ashy roast that I like. Character has the style-requisite flavors of dates, figs and tobacco. There are some minor flavor imperfections, but otherwise I like what is going on here.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: this is a perfectly cromulent imperial stout, if not an outstanding one.

Pours a clear dark, amberish brown with minimal foam in the Orval chalice. Malty body, fairly substantial, but you wouldn't call it rich. A bit of a tickle on the tongue but seems barely carbonated. Not much aroma. Beery dark roasted grain flavor, slightly sweet.

Hints of vanilla along with the caramel taste. Very slight bitterness and a bit of herbal greens. Overall this seems a little faded and even slightly oxidized. I'd mix it with a spritzy dark brew to improve the drinkability. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham.

$ 10.67 (Including shipping)/capped bomber ($ 0.485/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA.
Bottle dated 11/10/17 in extremely small dark numbers on the shoulder, stored at 42 degrees and served at 60 degrees in a hand-washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, the only penetration is through the meniscus.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.3 cm, aggressive center pour), khaki, dense, short retention time, diminishing to a four mm ring and a complete layer.
Lacing – Fair. A wide ring of tiny bubbles remains connected to the ring as the volume drops, but this ring follows the dropping level and does not remain on the interior sides much above the level of the brew.
First pour – Dark brown, clear.
Aroma – 4 - Moderately strong roasted malt, coffee, and caramel.
Flavor – 3.5 - Flavors are less distinct than in the nose. Begins with barely noticeable roasted malt and coffee and ends slightly bitter with the coffee hanging on. A flash of alcohol occurs at the end as well. The aftertaste is slightly bitter and has an organic chemical acridity. No hops, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 - Medium, creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and summation – 4 – While the palate seemed a bit thin, overall this is not a bad RIS. It has the expected not-overwhelming bitterness and at 8.5% ABV the alcohol is barely noticeable. Unfortunately, the aromas found in the nose do not translate directly to the flavor but are muddled and barely individually distinguishable.

Fizzier head; still lasting but not as impressive as nine months ago. More subdued aroma; still wine-like but not much char. More pronounced alcohol flavor; very phenolic and medicinal; lost a lot of roasted and charred grain flavors and very little mocha or chocolate tones. Weak mouthfeel; very light and effervescent.

I'm torn between leaving my original ratings and this "aged" impression. I suppose in fairness I'll stick with the original ratings, but feel strongly that this is one beer that was never meant to age.

---------------------------------------------

Opaque black body topped with a dense, creamy, light tan head. Cocoa and charred grain aroma; some grape-like esters. Cocoa flavor; mocha; good hop bitterness balanced; some light alcohol taste. Heavy body yet seems light for the style; smooth and silky; mostly dry at the finish.

A pretty decent RIS. Everything hits the style points although the body seems rather weak for a big beer. Otherwise, Ваше здоровье!

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with a thin brown head that dissipates to a thick ring around the glass with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, whiskey, cocoa and oak. Flavor is charry dark toasted malt, fresh cut wood, bitter chocolate, coffee; finishes a little stark with grassy hops and wood char, lingering hop bitterness. Medium body with slight creaminess. A char forward stout with good woodiness from the barrel, but very little whiskey flavor. The initial flavor is good, with cocoa and well toasted malt, but the malt thins out into a finish that is mostly wood, hops and char. There is a pleasant cocoa flavor in the background of the finish that redeems it from deep woodiness. An interesting barrelled stout that could use a bit more malt depth to be a classic Russian imperial stout.
