Belgian IPAs can be hit or miss. I've had many that are quite good and others that sorta miss the mark. Then, there's Zijden Kousen, which kind of falls somewhere in between. Sort of the Belgian IPA purgatory, if you will.

Poured into a snifter, It's a nice enough looking beer, golden amber in color with a decent two-finger head. The nose is strange, though, with a funky strawberry Now-n-Later sweet scent to it. Bizarre. The taste is okay, with decent hoppy bitterness blended with a muted, but not understated maltiness. Some vanilla here? Strange, but not displeasing.

I wanted to like this more, to be honest. But, over the course of the .750ml bottle, which I shared with my wife (she wasn't crazy), it just hasn't grown on me like I expected it to. I thought as it sat out and warmed to room temp it might produce some nuanced flavors that I failed to pick up on at first, but it doesn't do much to be honest. It's not boozy, and it finishes well, but it just sorta misses here. It's not bad, and I've had worse examples of the style, but it doesn't quite do much to woo me here. Maybe it's the yeast strain? Not sure. But a revisit of the recipe might not be a bad idea.

Not bad, brewed at Adelberts but once "Naughty brewing" actually starts brewing it's going to change so my rating might change

Pours a cloudy amber color with a finger width foamy head. Head retention is mild as is lacing. Has a bitter, grassy hop. Malty. Does have a big citrus aroma but was bottled Feb of 2014. Big bitter malty taste. Some Belgian yeast. Not much in the way of fruit. Some caramel. Not bad for the age. Medium bodied with some moderate carbonation.
