Reviewed and poured from a corked 750oz bottle.

Appearance: Pours a dark and muddy brown bordering but not quite black. Massive, fluffy, tan head that stacks 3 to 4 fingers high. The head has hung around for about 5 minutes before slowly dying down leaving a rich tapestry of lace in it's wake.

Aroma: First impression is of tart berries and ripe dark fruits. The malt comes through but not in a big way. I think the fruit character is from something in the barrel. Further inspection yields vanilla and maybe some rose water however, the prominent feature is more wine barrel than bourbon barrel.

Taste: I was expecting more sweetness but my fears were confirmed. This beer has not had a beneficial stay in it's wooden time chamber. Lots of wood bitterness coupled with roasted malt does not make for the most enjoyable experience. That said it does have a few things going it. I like the fact the it has a slight bourbon flavor meshed with this somewhat weird white wine oakyness. Red apples with a blend of green apple as well, infused with raisin, plum, .....did I mention oak? ALCOHOL is very present but yet disguised, oxy moron right?

Mouthfeel: Slick oily character but with a dry finish. Bottle conditioning helps keep it lighter than its abv would suggest.

Overall: This beer does have positive qualities but falls short of what I believe to be the brewers intention. Barrels don't always turn out and I think this one was bottled in spite of that fact. Glad that I was able to try it but would not buy again.

Poured from a 750ml bottle (batch 2 - 16Jun15) into a pint glass.
LOOK: Pours with 3 finger's worth of brown foam. By minute two, the foam is two finger's worth high and has changed it's color to khaki. After 3 and a half minutes, the head finally settles at a half finger's worth. The dissipation of the foam has left thick lacing on the sides of the glass. Black in color with a ruby tint that is difficult to make out due to the darkness of the brew. Rising bubbles are very small in size and subtle in quantity. Lacing is thick and extremely high.
SMELL: Mild aromas of sour yeast are noticeable at first for me, given that I haven't had a yeasty porter before. Mild aromas of oak, subtle aromas of chocolate, and hints of vanilla and coffee can also be detected. There is no bourbon from the barrel aging process from what I can tell. This smells mediocre at best.
TASTE: Initial taste consists of mild sour yeast and oak flavors. Mild flavors of vanilla and sweet coffee enter right after and are the followed by mild bitter roasted malt flavors. Subtle bourbon (there it is!) and sweet chocolate flavors finish off the taste as sour yeast, bitter roasted malt, and oak flavors persist, but vanilla and sweet coffee flavors (the best part of the beer) fade to subtle.
FEEL: Light-bodied and moderately carbonated. Goes down smooth and finishes with a high amount of dryness.
NOTE: I paid $14 for this bottle. I am highly dissatisfied. I have tried one other beer from Adelbert's and I loved it. That being said, it just adds on to the disappointment that is this beer. The bottle says it's an "Imperial Vanilla Porter," but the vanilla just wasn't strong enough.

Black pour with a brown one-finger head. Big boozy aroma with some charred malt. Taste has a big bourbon presence upfront along with some dark roasted malt flavors. Can also taste a hint of vanilla in the back end.

I have loved the other beers I have had from them, but I was a little disappointed in this one.

Pours like a porter. Dark brown nice head. Smells cherry sweet like bourbon with faint alcohol. Tastes like dark chocolate, bourbon barrel is not too over powering and lends nicely to the beer. I did n pick up on the vanilla, which was a disappointment. Mouth feel is typical of the style. What is the biggest turn off is that I taste too much alcohol.

Watery bland and my first drain pour. 2nd try with a new bottle, wanted to like it but just rank all around.
