Brewed: April 26, 2006
Bottled: July 18, 2006
Cases Made: 787
Described as an "Abbey American quadruppel". Brewed with a combination of Maris Otter, Munich, Victory and Special B malts and hopped with Perle, Liberty and Saaz. The wort from the kettle was split into 2 fermenters, pitching one with an American Ale yeast and the other with a Belgian Trappist yeast. Near the end of fermentation, the tanks were combined to finish out and then conditioned for 12 weeks before bottling.

Murky reddish brown color with almost no head and judging from the lack of a pop little carbonation. Aroma is full of alcohol soaked dark fruits with bits of caramel, brown sugar, and chocolate around the edges. Sweet sugary fruity maltiness with just a hint of alcohol. Lingering caramel sugary finish with some obvious sherry like oxidation. Thick body almost no carbonation sweet syrupy mouthfeel. Smells wonderful, but the flavor is quickly heading downhill. Wish I had tried it fresher.

Thanks to a friend for sharing this bottle.
The beer pours a reddish-amber color with no real head. The aroma has quite a bit of dark fruit in it, as well as some big toffee notes. The flavor is similar. There is a ton of toffee and caramel malt, with some dark fruit (grapes and raisins) as well as some alcohol. As the beer warms, some dark cherry notes really start to come through strongly. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very glad I got to try this one.

Another gem procured by Jason - I think he is having his revenge for all the bad beers to which I've subjected him. Served in a Jester King tulip.
A - Pours pretty much still. A few bubbles adhere to the sides of the glass. Initial pour is transparent amber, but subsequent ones are quite murky and turbid.
S - Oxidation, brown sugar, milk chocolate. About what I'd expect from a five-year-old quad in a screw-top bottle.
T - Taste is worse. Mostly papery oxidation, with some caramel in the periphery. Bitter walnut and alcohol finish.
M - No carbonation, sticky full body, some alcohol warmth, and a lightly tannic finish.
D - Not holding up well at all - damn screw-top caps. A quad should be able to age gracefully for five years, so this is a pretty big failure. Use for cooking if you still have these.
