Wow, where to start.

the beer pours dark brown/black with a tan head. There are brown highlights when held up to a light source.

Aroma is spicy nutmeg, cinnamon and allspice. The spices you would expect from a pumpkin pie. Also get a little gingerbread.

Taste is very complex. I started the beer at about 50 degrees and the first two flavors were chocolate and alcohol. In addition to the chocolate flavor, you also get some bitter chocolate flavor. Very nice. As the beer warms, you start to get more spices. The flavor is not like any of the individual pumpkin pie spices (nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and allspice) but tastes like a combination of those spices. As the beer approaches room temperature, it starts to taste like gingerbread. There is also some roasted malt and you do get some alcohol warming.

The beer has a medium-full mouthfeel and little carbonation which goes awesome with this beer. This is a sipper, but it is extremely easy to drink. Even with some alcohol flavor, you cannot tell it is 11 percent. I have never had a beer quite like this. Great effort from Brock and the guys and gals at Saint Arnolds.

This is an outstanding beer. I have only had Divine Reserves 6-9, but this has been my favorite so far.

"I Barley Made It"

Poured into a New Belgium glass black with a one finger tan head that disappated quickly. No lacing. The smell has a strong scent of pumpkin. The taste is awesome. It's like a chocolate pumpkin pie. There is a strong alcohol presence, which is expected. But considering the time of year, it warms you up nicely. With the combination of pumpkin and alchol warmth, this is the perfect winter beer. Too bad it won't be back next year.

Poured into tulip glass black as oil, but carbonation almost gone. The scent is still strong of spices and pumpkin. The taste has mellowed quite a bit. The chocolate pumpkin pie I described before definatly is not the case anymore. The pumpkin is still there, and the spices are still there, but the malts that once gave this a chocolate flavor are definatly not as strong. The alcohol burn is also lower which makes the mouthfeel a little better, and the lower carbonation hasn't affected the mouthfeel at all.

Overall, she's aging well.

12oz. stubby brown bottle into a tulip.

A: Deep brown, nearly no light. Moderate head on the pour with little retention but some lacing.

S: Light pumpkin and moderate pumpkin spicing. Very pleasant. Some light alcohol that is in place.

T/M: Pumpkin is a bit bigger and the spices definitely are. Almost too much but somewhat balanced by the alcohol and malts. Body is medium full with moderate carbonation.

D: Pretty damn tasty. Wish I had more than 2 left.

I have high hopes for the latest installment of the divine series even though the 7 & 8 haven't been as good as the 5 & 6 but I'm hooked none the less. The beer pours smoothly into the glass with noticeable sediment on the bottom. It looks to be more then yeast as there are bigger chunks of gritty black... something in there. The brew is reddish black with garnet highlights only on the edges. The head is mocha looking in color and not very lasting.

The nose is sweet and spiced with cinnamon, eggnog-ish nutmeg and gingerbread. There is also a heavy dollop of pumpkin pie cut with chocolate and a little booziness. Very nice and unexpected from an Imperial Stout although great for a cold December day.

Ladies and gentlemen buckle your seat belts. This is a tremendous beer with pointy spears of flavor assaulting every bud on your tongue. Deep dark unsweet chocolate starts the attack followed very closely by a barrage of holiday spices. Everything present in the nose is also in the taste and then some. Think of a coco based pumpkin pie. There is even a little smoked character. Very tasty, complex and just short of overpowering.

The mouthfeel is solid. Thick full body with the right amount of carbonation to not distract from the hearty flavors. A light boozy warmth is the only hint of the ABV other then the touch of alcohol in the nose. Although this beer tastes nothing like an Imperial Stout it is very different and a kick ass variation of the style. Again well done St. Arnold's.

12oz bottle, as an extra in a trade a good bit ago...served in a DFH signature glass

A - poured with a quarter inch or so of loose bubbly khaki colored foam, falls to a thin layer and ring fairly quickly. the beer is near black with some dark ruby tones when held up to light.

S - hmmm...lots of spices, cinnamon, gingerbread, cloves, some licorice, pumpkin, some roasted malt...quite unique. have no idea what this one is going to taste like.

T - very interesting here as well. drinks like a weird hybrid of a Pumpkin/Xmas/RIS. starts off with some slightly bitter bold roasted pumpkins, turning into slightly sweet licorice and dark fruits, finishes with some ginger and christmas spices. other notes of dark chocolate, roasty coffee, and molasses.

M - a little thin in the body with some sharp small-bubbled carbonation. finishes with lingering spices and bitterness.

D - weird. cant say i hated it, but this is certainly a winter beer, and one 12oz should be shared (possibly three ways).

Divine Reserve #9 pours a chocolate fudge color. Looks onyx from where I'm sitting. No light's cutting through this one. A dark, mocha colored head tops it off nicely. It only stands about a finger and a half tall, and dissipates quickly. Lacing was on the light side.

The nose is pretty good. It's very spicy. Pumpkin, nutmeg, and ginger are very strong in the mix. In fact, they tend to mask some of the other scents I know should be here. There is a bit chocolate, and some secondary notes of molasses, pepper, and black licorice. But the spices seem to hog the spotlight a little too much. Alcohol is noted on the tail. At 11%, that's not exactly a shocker.

The flavor is alright. I'm wrestling with how much I like it at the moment. The spices are certainly the focal point. Pumpkin, nutmeg, and ginger flavors are all noted. They're strong throughout. There are some stout elements present. Most notable are chocolate and light coffee. The chocolate flavor is bittersweet and cocoa-ish. Black licorice, molasses, pepper, and anise round out the secondary level. Alcohol is noted, and is a little warm. It's not quite hot, but it's not far. It has spicy finish, leaving plenty of pumpkin and ginger clinging to the palate.

This Divine Reserve release has a medium body and light carbonation. It is smooth, but feels too thin for what it is. More body would help. Drinkability is rather average. The flavor's alright, but the spices grown somewhat tiresome. It's also warm and a little boozy.

I'm a big fan of Saint Arnold's Divine Reserve Series. While #9 is probably my least favorite to date, I'm sure they'll get things back on track. This one's alright, but loses its way. The spices overshadow the stout elements. It needs to be the other way around. The spices should complement rather than mask. More body would also be a good thing. Nonetheless, it's worth a try. However, if you don't care for pumpkin spice flavors in your beer, skip this one.

Poured out of a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Minimal tan head that dissipates quickly.

Smells like cinnamon and cloves, very pleasant, hints of brown sugar. Reminds me of gingerbread.

Very sweet, kind of like dried dates with nutmeg and cloves. I don't get much pumpkin, but I do get the pumpkin pie spices more. Spicy after taste, drinking this beer fresh the alcohol is noticeable.

Nicely carbonated, and does not have a syrupy constancy.

This is a big beer that could use some time aging, so that all these flavors can mellow out a bit. It's pretty spice heavy and the 11% shows. Fresh, it's not something I could drink that quickly. Very interesting brew, but I look forward to tasting it in a year or so.

Pours dark mahogany with a very nice tan head.

Smells like pumpkin and spices. It reminds me of my Grandma's pumpkin pie.

The taste follows the nose, but slightly sweeter.

The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, much like pie.

This was an interesting and surprising treat. Mabe I will serve some of these next Thanksgiving instead of real pie.

Many thanks to TexasStout for this one. It poured an inky black out of the bottle with a thin brown head that fizzled out quickly until it disappeared leaving no lace. Would have liked a head on this one but a good looking beer none the less. The smell wasn't what I was expecting, lots of clove, with ginger, allspice and what seems like spruce or pine. It reminds me a little of a cloved up Anchor Our Special Ale. The taste was more spice. Not a lot of pumpkin. Some hints of chocolate but mostly clove and other spices. Medium body, the carbonation is low but comes through in the finish with a slight alcohol burn. Still pretty drinkable considering the 11%ABV. Overall I would say I was disappointed, I had big expectations for this beer. It didn't distinguish itself as a stout and in the end the beer was lost among an overpowering amount of clove.

I bought two six packs of this, one to drink, one to age for a year. The aging process did wonders for this brew. One sip and I'm reminded of pumpkin muffins with the dryness of ginger snaps. The kick that was there in the first six pack is definitely much stronger after a year of aging in my closet. This is a beer to enjoy in front of a fire or with friends. One point, I can't taste the chocolate that I could detect at first. I know this beer is somewhat unconventional but I really enjoyed it. It is one of the best offerings yet from the divine reserve lineup. If you haven't had Saint Arnold yet, come down to Houston for some of Texas' finest beer.

Pours black with brown edges and a thin brown head that quickly fades.

Nose is huge cinnamon spice cookies; cinnamon brown bread/cinnamon rolls with spice.

Mouthfeel is medium creamy and rich and well balanced.

Flavors are all sweet cinnamon coffee with some winter spice; black coffee mid palate with cinnamon and spices that goes to a sweet bitter espresso/soy/burnt brown sugar finish. Hints of soy sauce and molasses. Flavors are actually very bright and appealing. Sweet cinnamon is dominant here but well done, unique and flavorful.

Flavor profile would lend it to more of a sipper than one with food but high acid could prove me wrong on this one.

Black, thin tan head, gone quick; narrow ring of paperthin bubbles which flatten to leave a nice even lacing.

Is 'molasses stout' a category? This is swimming in spice, raisin, and molasses. There is a good bit of booze as well as malt in the nose, but you've got to get back the sweetness.

Also 'spiced' right in the front. The fruit as also there, but this is a bit more watery than it initially appears. The mouthfeel is a bit of a letdown, with the 'cakey'/'christmas' aroma I was expecting a big chewy mouth, but that isn't there. This is most evident in the watery raisin flavor that sort of washes through behind all of the other flavors.

Nicely carbed, and not a dissapointing mouthfeel as it stands alone, but with the big aroma I was expecting a similar mouthfeel and this did not deliver that - style well within the style.

Certainly fine. I drank it soon after recieving it, though I have to say I'd like to get a couple bottles and celler than because the flavor is both a bit unique and full of unexpected characteristics that I'd like to taste is with a few years on it.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout (?) with a nice off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of cinnamon and light pumpkin with a rich malt base. Taste is quite sublime with great notes of cinnamon mix with light pumpkin pie and a rich lactose forward malt base. Body is quite full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed though maybe a tad too sweet. Definitely something I would like to have again.
