Visiting on SAB on Beer safari in Houston. Had on cask at tasting room. Rich, dark fruit, some hints of cherry and fig, rich and so smooth from the cask. Special treat.

Appearance: Pours coffee colored with a vague tawny hue; the small tan head fades quickly but leaves stringy lacing

Smell: Caramel, fig and cherry tones; subtle red licorice and nutmeg aromatics, too

Taste: Burnt brown sugar, molasses and caramel lay down the base, with the fig, plum and cherry tones building; red licorice and nutmeg appear, after the swallow, with the sweetened dark fruit dominant in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; a bit flabby for the style

Overall: With the exception of the mouthfeel, this is a very nice domestic version of the style

Pours a dark amber-brown. Deep red highlights, almost purplish. Small light tan head is slow to form and quick to vanish. Moderate amount of lacing that also vanishes quickly.

Huge malt and dark fruit aroma. Caramel and molasses. Ripe plum, raisin, fig, prunes, and cherry. Toffee, anise, and vanilla. Dark bread. Reminiscent of cognac or brandy.

Big dark fruit on the tongue. Plum, prunes, and figs. Molasses, dark and syrupy. Brown sugar, caramel, and sweetened bread dough. Licorice, cloves, and nutmeg.

Thick, chewy mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Mildly boozy. Sweet and mildly syrupy. Lingering fruit and spice.

Big flavors and aromas in this malt bomb. Fruity, sweet, malty, boozy, rich, indulgent.

Spectacular deep dark amber-brown color with a garnet aura. Freely poured into a snifter-tulip at a little below room temp and the tan head builds nicely but not out of control. Pugnacious, sheet-like lacing as the foam loves to hang on to the inside of the glass when swirled lazily.

Smell of malt, but not much on the caramel side, more of a bread and dark pruned fruits, predominantly, but mildly raisin, and modest alcohol whiff. Whereas the aromas are understated, it is the taste that delivers them more strongly, but with the alcohol backing off, making a very nice fluid, progressive drinking experience from nose to tongue. On top of that, the "Belgian Extra Dark Candi Syrup" is clearly present, especially on the back end, making this possibly too sweet for some, but certainly not to the degree of Avery's Reverend, for example. The feel imparts a nice medium-heavy weight and creaminess that suits the other characteristics.

Overall, an admirable Belgian-style quad that's easily revisitable -- a shame it's a limited release.

Thanks to mrbubbler for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours a clear dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, dark fruit, fruit juice, caramel, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel, fruit juice, dark fruit, and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with nice dark fruit and caramel qualities all around.

Serving type: bottle.
