Watzke am Goldenen Reiter is part of the Watzke chain that includes the main location, the Watzke Ball- und Brauhaus, as well as the Watzke am Goldenen Reiter and Watzke am Ring.

The "Golden Rider" refers to the statue at the Neustädter Markt just north of the Augustusbrücke leading out of the old town. It's on the main road, at Hauptstrasse 1, which is the start of a fairly fancy shopping strip that runs up to Albertstrasse. Of the three locations, this is probably the most commercial looking from the front, but don't be fooled as it's quite nice inside - and they have the bell!

From their website : "This bell bears the name of John the Baptist and should ring together with the bells Jeremiah , Joshua , David , Philip and Hanna in one of the towers of the Frauenkirche in Dresden. There's much more if you'd care to look it up.

If you are out shopping at the Neustädter Markt I'd certainly recommend it for a visit, but keep in mind that Watzke am Ring is just a little bit to the south if you're planning on touring the altstadt and/or the altmarkt -just an option.

Both locations are similar in appearance and feel, although the outside seating at Watzke am Ring is much nicer. The food and beer is the same as well, so I guess it's really just up to where you happen to be at the time.

Visited on a Tuesday early evening while I was in town the first week in November. Got there before 7 and the only inside spot available was at the bar. Limited but well done selection of beer, large food portions, also excellently prepared. Service was good. I was staying close to the Frauenkirche, so it was a short walk from my hotel. Worth a return visit.
