Notes:
An English style brown ale reminiscent of the North English style. Coffee and toffee notes dance between the nose and palate, with enough hop bitterness to be noticeable through an ample body.

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a crystal clear, dark brown coloring, with a surface coating of tan head. Nose of roast coffee and not much else. The flavors are bitter and roasted forward, with a tangy sweet candi sugar and toffee backbone. Off-balanced a bit. Smooth and light in mouth, with a tangy and sugary aftertaste. The finish is light and effervesced, and slightly cloying.

20 oz. draft served in a shaker glass. Paired (appropriately) with a Carolina eastern style BBQ. It pours a dark cola color with a thin, almost non-existent, ecru-colored head and lacing. Not much on the nose: roasted malt, nuts, and brown bread. The taste was much better. Particularly as the glass warmed, there was freshly-brewed coffee, toffee, and the faintest taste of molasses. This ale is medium-bodied with an almost creamy feel and virtually no carbonation. The 7.5% ABV is hardly noticeable and doesn't distract. Overall, when my glass was served, I was disappointed by the appearance and smell (or lack of either). However, the taste and feel are creditable and it was to right choice to balance the sour vinegar in the BBQ.
