Very Good
Seltzer's Smokehaus 7Seltzer's Smokehaus 7
Notes: From the hardwood fired smokehouses of Seltzer’s Smoked Meats comes Seltzer’s Smokehaus 7. A unique combination of malt, hops, and smoke create a rauchbier with a flavor that harkens back to the “old-world” ways of a Lebanon County icon.

What a cool beer this was! The base beer was chocolate-y with a lightly grassy hop finish. The smokey element was very well incorporated; kinda meaty and not ashy the way some rauchbiers come across to me. Definitely a must try if you get the chance.

I tried this on tap at the Brewery in Lebanon, served chilled in a pint.
The color is an appropriate dark shade of brown with pale off white head. The smell is almost exactly like Lebanon bologna -sweet yet a hint of smoke. The feel is very good, not overly smoke laden with a nice amount of sweetness and subtle alcohol.

The taste is as the nose hints at - a Lebanon bologna flavor in beer form. The smoke is almost perfect with a sweet woody quality with malt not overly caramel with a nice supporting flavor in the malt with low bitterness and mostly dry finish. This is a very good smoked beer without any medicinal qualities or over the top briquette elements just a nice complimentary flavor like drinking Lebanon bologna which is much better than it sounds -very drinkable for the strength

Poured from the can into a nonic pint glass.

Mahogany red body, with a touch of amber brown color. Some slight clarity. Head creation is minimal making barely a finger of a fine tan color. Manages a simple collar while settling.

Aroma is fairly straightforward but good. Minimal touches of smoke, and quite a bit of spicy herbal qualities. Hints of clove and toasty spices but nothing excessive. Does flirt with a little bit of novocaine qualities.

Palate brings the goods but in a much different rauch delivery. Flirting wet palate makes the flavors less dominant, and not much for supportive malt depth. However, the basics are there and solid. Good touches of smoke and woody aromas on the mid palate, but some work on the finish is needed. Aftertaste has great smokey quality but does get it into slight tongue numbing feel and taste. There's also a bit of unneccesary bitterness on this but just a hair.

This is almost like a pale rauch or session like feeling one. However, the real solid basics are there it just really needs some touching up and this guy could easily stand up to the Schlenkerla standards.

Nose has a smoke element that bounces between hickory and fatty smoked meat. Taste begins with equal parts hop (perhaps Noble?) bitterness and a very ashy hickory. The smoke is undeniable, as it rides right along all the way through the finish and lingers in the aftertaste.

Pours a brownish copper color with ruby edges and a half finger of head. This offering smells like a campfire. The flavor starts off smokey but there is nothing overwhelming here. overwhelming. The body is a touchy thin.

-No baloney. can. from brewery.

A: Nice burgundy coloring sits a dark smoked cherry wood in the vessel. Beautiful firm and frothy tan head sits atop at one inch. Good signs of of carbonation along the vessel walls.

S: Fresh slim jim, smoked ham and pork roll. Spicy malt, smoked kielbasa sausage, toasted crystal with a really nice strength. Like an Amish meat market, pleasant and appetizing.

T: Really good smokey meat flavor, bacon, pork roll, with some smoked sausage-kielbasa. Smoked wood and amber malt. Spicy smoked pine and apple slices finishes out.

M: Silty feel on the mouthful, creamy feel soft.

O: Overall an old world feel. Not smokey as campfire ash, but more smoked meat, bold and spicy. An easy drinking and accessible example. I am a huge fan of smoked beers, this leans more on the meaty side then ash and campfire and liquid smoked. Honest, and a fine tribute to the areas heritage.
