I'm admittedly not a huge saison fan. This one was little too funky for me. The whole "barnyard" and/or "horse blanket" thing doesn't do it for me. This brought together those qualities I don't really care for, but with fruit and wine barrels too. It was drinkable, but I wouldn't get it again.

Pours a copper-amber color with a thin white head, leaving back a nice ring of lacing.

Smells of lemon zest, kumquat, more exotic fruits and a tart hay quality, with an artificially perfume appearance hovering above this foundation. Got a bright oak backbone, which does not prevent the fruits from unfolding in many facettes.

Got a lower carbonation among a medium bodied beer with lots of sour fruits, a sweet maltiness and oaken barrels which kind of distract from each others.

Tastes overly sweet, somehow fruity but aggresivly acidic and sour at the same time, with some oaken wine barrel adding to sweeter malts and a tropical juice fruitiness. All the different flavors completely collide on the palate with a pungent fruit defined dryness, together with prevailing white wine barrels.

This does not work for me. Its got too much of everything, creating an unpleasant chaos on the tongue which fails completely to convince. Medicinal, like a cheap Kräuterschnaps in which the complex mixture of adjuncts and barrel aging does not come together.

Look: I really enjoy this color. It's somewhat amber with a slight reddish hue, kinda interesting.
Smell: At first it didn't really smell like much, but after it warmed up a bit it smells like super juicy fruit which is amazing.
Taste: Ok, I was little let down here. It has a slight tartness, a slight funkyness, but this underlying butteryness like there's some DMS in there.
Feel: A little thick on the mouthfeel, for 8.8% I wasn't expecting something super carbed. For the style though, it's a bit more syrupy than it should be.
Overall: This is an interesting beer, glad I tried it, but definitely not something I'm going to seek out. If I could have the smell that this thing has in an air freshener I'd be so down.

Honestly have to agree with the more negative opinions on this beer. It looks a bit dark for style, presumably from some of the fruit. Smells like some weird herbal tea that some new age natural medicine believer would give you, and the taste isn't too far off from the smell. Really expected more from a barrel aged fruited saison, especially considering that Bottle Logic normally makes fantastic beers. Biggest beer letdown of 2016 for me so far.

500 mL bottle. Deep orange and clear body. Smells herbal, floral, and lightly acidic. Tastes all over the place. Passion fruit tartness. Rosemary. Herbal here as well. I thought I'd like the wine flavor more, but it's a little messy. Light and lightly tart. I don't really dislike it, but it's a mess of a beer.

Pours a clear ruby hue, almost like a dark rosé wine. Smell and taste are hugely complex, blending tropical fruits like passion fruit and dragon fruit with hints of watermelon, apricot, peach, cherry, raspberry, and hints of both wine barrels are present as well. Slightly tart with hints of French oak. Mouthfeel is decent, sticky and juicy. Like biting right into a foreign tropical fruit. Overall definitely a wild treat for the tastebuds. Fun to share with friends.

Beer review 2028, the 200th of 2015. Special note: Passionate Dragon named after the sex move, invented by me, in which a bleeding mouth sore provides additional lubrication during gentleman-to-lady oral intercourse.

Pours with that weird alcoholic sheen I have been noticing on high-ABV beers and have grown quite terrified of, sort of like the chemical haze that floats half-visible atop puddles in gas station parking lots. It's a nice color from far off, though. Very little by way of head.

Smells absolutely fine. Almost faint, actually. Delicate tropical fruit, mild yeast.

Tastes much more assertive and complex than the aroma had led me to anticipate, but without getting to the mouth puckering level found in some other beers. The passionfruit takes the lead up front, followed by yeast spiciness and straberry nodes. The only noticeable remnants of the kumquats are a fruity tartness that finishes the beer off along with some chewy, lightly spicy yeast and some faint and not very pleasant ethanol nodes. Overall tasty but a little off balance.

Everything about this beer was A-OK, except for most important parts... the taste and smell. The use of passionfruit in this beer did not work for me and everyone else at my bottle share. Universally not liked very much.

Huge blast of watermelon Jolly Ranchers as this pours from the bottle. That unexpected note evolves over time to offer up some sweet tropical fruit notes, a light vinuous character, and maybe some super light funk. Very still looking, no head at all, and a sort of pinkish-brownish tone. The flavor is very fruit forward with a touch of earth in the finish, perhaps from the bay leaf? It's lightly tart, barely funky, and in this way seems to lack some needed character, with little presence of the wine barrels to contribute that either. This is a weird beer that never really coalesced for me. Interesting notes here and there, but ultimately disjointed, and, most damningly, it definitely didn't improve over the course of the glass. Current rating is bizarro world.

Looks as you would expect for a saison with fruit. Had a light pink hue.

Smelled of cough syrup.

Tasted like the saison and fruit had a fight and we all lost.

Feel was light on carbonation.

Overall, kind of a mess of a beer. I don't think it was a bad bottle, everyone around me seemed to enjoy it. But, I guess just not my cup of tea.

Small pour, thin head, but lots of carb for sure. Beautiful brownish gold color. Nose full of candied passion fruit and wine. OMG! The taste is incredible. Sooooo much going on in this beer. You get sweet passion fruit in one sip, wine in the next, sweet prune candy in another, slight cinnamon even though none was used, probably due to the wine barrels. This is a true definition of a "complex" beer. Need to get me more!

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Very dark red with some real nice brown and ruby hues, but also incredibly crystal clear. Almost looks like a sparkling rose, with lots of champagne like carbonation. Head manages tan with a hint of pink to it also.

Exquisite aroma. Wonderful fruit tropical notes that bounce around. Exceptional mild soft funk, taffy like small sweetness. Wonderfully balanced and incredibly varied and complex, unlike any beer I've ever smelled. So much going on and easy to get purposely lost.

Palate manages a bit more surprises. Uniform and blasting fruit flavors that all take turns. With exotic fruit and tropics there's even some cherry hiding around, and it's all over the place. Mouthfeel is just a touch thin and has more of a wine vinous character. Much of the barrel notes seem to not be that full in feel as well on the palate, but the flavors are exceptional.

Total style blur, and comes out somewhere between wine and beer. It's missing a lot of oak roundness feel and is a bit thin, but it's very memorable.

Had a pour at the tasting room release party. 6 oz pour from a chilled bottle into a BL tulip.

Awesome nose with cherries, papaya and a hint of that wine barrel bite in the air.

The T&M delivers the same with a great, dry white wine bite.

Seek this out. Might one of my favorite releases of the year for SoCal.

Had a chance to try out yet another one of these Gods nectar from Bottle Logic Brewing called the Passionate Dragon. Had this in the tasting room pours golden ruby color and the aromas of passion fruit, dragon fruit and kumquats is present throughout this beer. This is a sour beer which is not too sour and the wine character really stands out. I also had a second chance to sample a bottle of this as well and whoa what a treat...the mouth feel on the bottle was right on. I'm just in love with this amazing beer cant get enough of it.

- 6oz. poured into snifter off tap at tasting room (Anaheim, CA) on 2-Oct-15

Juicy apples and tart strawberries, hints of passion fruit and kumquat, and some floral notes. The taste was much better than the nose. Dry white wine in the second half. Very unique saison that might very well justify the hefty price tag. I'm impressed.

Had Passionate Dragon at the release yesterday at Bottle Logic. Poured from a 500mL bottle, PD boasts a beautiful golden Ruby color with nice legs on the glass. Vinous and passion fruit aromas are present throughout this beer. The flavor profile is so unique; notes of passion fruit, papaya, and huge red and white wine presence is rounded out by a nice oaky undertone. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and silky, which lends to a beautiful long finish. This beer has developed into something amazing since I last had it at the bruery cooperversary party. Glad I was able to procure bottles!!

Bottle Logic passionate Dragon what an Excellent sour, but still needs some time to be even more mind-blowing! The mouthfeel was so refreshing and not overly tart. Great amount of balance to the beer. So refreshing doesn't feel like a sour more like drinking wine but I really enjoyed it.

Poured from the bottle at Bottle Logic during its release. Appearance is a crystal clear pinkish red hue with a quickly dissipating white head that leaves a small ring of bubbles along the glass. smell is mild. Mostly floral w/ some bay and citrus. Taste is immediately passion and dragonfruit. Has a nice crisp mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Once it warmed up a bit i was able to pull much more of the barrel and wine character as well as the bay leaves and light spice notes from it. Truly a delicious beer. Very thankful I purchased as many bottles as i did!

As previous reviews stated, this beer changed dramatically between the first and second times that I had it. The color is a dark ruby, the smell is of funk. taste is tart but not overly tart, still can't taste the other flavors. Crazy amount of layers of flavor. if you have the opportunity to seek this out, i highly recommend it.

Way better the second time around. Needed a little more time in the barrels i think. So complex, yet smooth. A crazy amount of flavors that all work very well together. Another great from Bottle Logic

On tap at Bruery Copperversary. Pours a hazy copped meets ruby. Slightly floral with a fruity, think cherry meets jasmine flowers. Slight yeasty funk but a balance of the fruity flavors with some malt still present. Finishes slightly slick.
