Deep brown almost black pour. Tan head that settles but stays at about 1/4 inch. Good amounts of residual lace, leaving thick and foamy memoirs around the rim of the glass.

Nose starts with roasty coffee, chocolate, and even hints of some ancho Chiles for some reason. That quickly gets replaced with tons of roasty espresso, more of what I expected. Finishes sweet, almost with some pastry qualities, caramelized sugar and sweet bread.

The flavors are incredibly roasty, that Jamaican coffee packs a powerful punch. The follow up is all bittersweet dark chocolate and vanilla, with subtle hops waiting at the finish line. The balance is really fantastic, but the coffee is the clear leader of this Wolfpack.

The finish is sticky, with a medium body and low carb. No motor oil vibes, just a nice barrel aged stout that goes down smooth and with a nice boozy warmth.

Had this bottle in December. This is an exceptional beer. The coffee is balanced perfectly with the vanilla, but both are massive and bold on top of the chocolate. Just tremendous flavors coming through and one I will seek out again.

The first aroma you get is a chocolate/coffee heaven and is followed by an amazing taste of just pure goodness of the perfect mixture of chocolate, coffee, vanilla. Cellar this beer and you’ll be amazed. It’s got the rich feel and head looks great. Taste will blow you away. Nothing too mellow, and the smell is just so perfect as well. Definitely recommend it if you get your hands on one.

Black in color. Tan head.

The coffee on this beer is awesome. Not burnt or roasted. Great vanilla flavor that goes with the chocolate and bourbon. Thick. Tons of flavor here. Another winner from BL.

Poured into a snifter. Muddy brown color with a frothy tan head. Huge vanilla, graham cracker, and marshmallow on the nose. The taste was similar with huge vanilla and marshmallow flavor. A nice coffee and roasted malt balance. Full-bodied but neither cloying nor boozy. An outstanding beer.

Fundamental Summation is a coffee-forward version of Fundamental Observation. Depending your taste preferences, this either enhances or diminishes the quality of an already outstanding beer. Personally, I thought that Fundamental Observation was a better beer and found myself wondering what 3 Sons Brewing actually contributed to this beer beyond splitting a name.

Poured from the bottle into an FO 2016 glass. Nose is vanilla, chocolate fudge, toffee, marshmallow. Rich mouthfeel; viscous. Palate has lots of vanilla and chocolate, followed by marshmallow and some coffee. (I suspect the coffee is falling off, but I can't be sure as I didn’t get to have it fresh.) Terrific beer; my only complaint is that is has a bit of a syrupy/molasses-like element to it, which I recall Red Eye November having as well. Some might like this but it make it a little too rich for me.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Bottle Logic tulip glass. Acquired in a trade.

Pours a thick, inky black body with a one finger mocha colored head that reduces slowly to leave a ring of foam.

I allowed this to warm to room temperature before reviewing, as this is when the most flavors came out and it was at its best. I'd recommend doing the same!

On the nose is straight marshmallow vanilla bourbon, with chocolate and light coffee lingering in the background. So much marshmallow!!

On the tongue is sweet vanilla-chocolate upfront, followed by thick, rich marshmallow-cream, rocky road brownies. Finishes with more sweet vanilla, and a light amount of coffee and roast. Mouthfeel is thick and velvety with low carbonation.

Wow.. this a straight vanilla marshmallow bomb with perfect mouthfeel. My favorite BL to date.

A 2017 500ml bottle.

It pours fairly viscous, with a thick tan head.

It smells like vanilla, bourbon, and sweet, smooth, Jamaican style coffee on top of some malted chocolate candy.

The vanilla really takes over the flavor, but it is a genuine, old time vanilla ice cream in a waffle cone flavor. There is a little bit of coffee still that is very smooth and even keeled, but it takes a back seat. The bourbon is a little more noticeable in this one than Darkstar, but well balanced.

The body is full, soft and luxurious. A tad thinner then the other 2 I have had, but still among the best in the country in this area.

If you like a vanilla stout, you should seek this one out.

This beer was enjoyed with several other BIG DAWGS (MD, Assassin, OG BC Vanilla, OG BCBCS...) and this took the figurative cake. 5's down the board are not something I take lightly.

Perfect thickness, jet black and moderate carbonation. The nose was a complex mixture if vanilla, bourbon, fudge and coffee. And the taste followed (vanilla, coco, bourbon, and coffee) !!! Amazing meld of of flavors. Well crafted and blended. This is a perfect beer!

Batch 1?....
Reminds me a lot of the original Summation, in that I get a lot of vanilla--the perfect amount of vanilla wafer flavor (similar to ANTEAD vanilla) and it has a very nice balance of flavors without being too sweet or cloying. The coffee is more pronounced than the original summation, coming out even more as it warms, which adds a nice roasty bitterness at the end. Tasty!

Pours pitch black with a nice foamy dark tan head. Aromas of hazelnut, vanilla, chocolate, roasted coffee, sweet bourbon, molasses, tobacco and oak all flow perfectly over into the flavor. The feel is dense, rich, smooth, creamy and overall just wonderful. Light carbonation and a bit of alcohol warmth finish it off especially as it comes to temperature. Overall, this is an amazingly delicious and near perfect bba/coffee/vanilla stout. Cheers!

Pitch black, small head and no lacing. Motor oil appearance. Some alcohol legs. Huge chocolate, vanilla and subtle coffee aromas. Silky smooth, coffee, huge vanilla and complex stout flavors. Full, smooth, and slick. Simply a stunning beer but I wanted more coffee.

Pours thick and viscous with almost no head to speak of especially considering the aggressive pour. Smell is coffee cupcake. Vanilla is by far most prevalent and is complemented nicely by the barrel undertones. Very reminiscent nose of fo but slightly less marshmellowy and more roasted undertone from the coffee. Taste is sweet up front followed by a roast middle and finished by a nice sweet cafe con leche aftertaste. The only knock on this beer is that the taste is not as harmonious as it could be. This may need a few months to meld seemlessly. Right now the flavors are still almost fighting. This beer is just the right level of thickness, silky, and just a tad sticky; superb. Overall another hit from bottle logic. They can almost do no wrong.

500ml bottle. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours a thick, oily dark black body, one finger mocha head, great retention, even a little bit of lacing. Smell is that distinct rich roasted JBM coffee, milk chocolate, moderate marshmallow, fair bit of roast, hefty bourbon presence, and dark chocolate fudge. It's a cornucopia of coffee, chocolate and bourbon. The vanilla doesn't come across here so much. It does bring a nice moderate marshmallow slickness on the backend of the palate, though. The coffee and bourbon are fairly strong up front, balanced out by a big mix of milk and dark chocolate; sweet and bitter adding more complexity. Mouthfeel is full bodied, lighter on the carbonation, light fluffy marshmallow on the finish. A damn tasty beer. For its taste, the trade value on this seems to be relatively low. I'd grab a couple now for the next year while you can. Not sure this will age well beyond that, though.

A: Lots of vanilla upfront, with coffee, chocolate, light sugars, ample booze, and a bourbon character finish.

A: Totally black color, opaque, with a thin tan head that quickly forms a ring around the glass.

T: Moderate vanilla, followed by rich chocolate like malts, lots of rich coffee, moderately light sweetness, light malt roast, bit of booze, with plenty of bourbon barrel character.

M: Full bodied with moderately light carbonation. The alcohol is less noticeable in the flavor and mouth-feel and drinks very smooth.

O: Delicious; the beer takes Fundamental Observation complexity and ramps it up with rich coffee character with lots of vanilla aromas. In particular, the beer drinks super smooth for being a really big beer.

Had multiple full pours at Week of Logic Preview.

Pours out inky black with an espresso-colored head that dissipates slowly. Aroma is all vanilla latte with a robust, yet floral and delicate coffee character. The decision to use Mostra-roasted Mavis Bank Estate Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee beans in this beer was a solid one.

Flavor is up front with the vanilla, bourbon, notes of cocoa, and lightly-toasted, faintly-boozy oak. The coffee character is what truly makes this. It sustains throughout the entire beer from end-to-end. It's the baseline, backbeat and hook, all rolled into one. If you put this one next to Fundamental Observation and told me to choose which I'd rather have, I'd definitely pick FS. What can I say, though... I'm a huge fan of coffee beers. And this one combines the sublime deliciousness of both FO & Summation with coffee and makes a whole new thoroughbred. American Pharaoh, meet foal.

Barely missed it kicking at The Bruery's 9th Anniversary party. Looking forward to having it on tap again at Bottle Logic at the end of May.

Had the the 3 sons tent at Huna day. First beer of the day and forgot to review it. It was awesome I know.
The thing that stuck out was how thick and smooth it was. It was fantastic. But I need more than 2 oz to review.

On tap at Hunahpu Day. Black body. Smells of bourbon, vanilla, coffee, and some residual sugars. Tastes of bourbon and coffee primarily. Sweet chocolate. Some vanilla, but not the character of regular Fundamental Observation. Good, but I guess it can't be both a vanilla and coffee bomb.

Black with a large, thick mocha foam that slowly settles to a thin blanket.

Smell is vanilla marshmallow, the enveloping aromas of a full on coffee house, wafer, and cocoa. Like whoa.

Taste is coffee, barrel, vanilla, a little hot chocolate, maple, and coconut. Seriously.

Unusually crisp for the style, yet full-bodied and sticky.

This was easily the top stout of Tampa Bay Beer Week, outdoing RareR Pooop and Manbearpuggle by a wide margin. I may just have to seek out some of that other Bottle Logic trade bait.
