My good friend Jon Passow who lives in Willits, CA sent me a bottle of this about 7 months ago and I've had it witting in my fridge since then until tonight. Poured into my snifter glass, this beer pours a very dark brown, almost black color that's not interested in letting in any light whatsoever. with silky looking tan head that's about an inch thick when first poured. Head settles to big, thick, cluster swirls of surface foam that cover almost the entire surface of the beer, a thick ring lining the inside of the glass, and some nice lacing. Aromas of roasted malts and nuts, vanilla, oaked rum, and cacao sweetness are all nicely present. Fortunately, the flavor profile is very similar, with roasted malts and nuts, vanilla, oaked rum, and cacao. Sweet, nutty, and certainly boozy in a pleasant way. Very decadent. The flavor profile rounds out with a bit of spiciness. Has a slightly prickly, slightly oily, mainly smooth and creamy and frothy medium to full bodied mouthfeel with light to moderate carbonation. Has a slightly burning/spicy and fairly boozy finish and aftertaste. A very excellent beer all around, I just wish the boozyness factor was not as up front and center as it is.

Wasn't really my favorite - not a bad looking beer and definitely had a bit of a nutty smell to it, but I didn't really like the taste as much as other BL beers I've tried. I couldn't get much Vanilla and despite what others have said elsewhere, the rum barrel was strong and overpowered the bourbon, but I can't say it interplayed well with the flavor of the Porter. I could definitely taste the finishing cacao nibs along with the roasty malts, both of which were a little too strong for me; there were some pecans hiding in there somewhere maybe - were it not for the overabundancd of cacao and roastiness, the pecans might have had more of a chance to appear, and possibly the walnuts that were resident in the beer I believe. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this one, but still did enjoy trying it.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black with a thick mocha head that fades to leave thick legs and good wisps.

S - Big aromas of rum barrels, faint chocolate. Not much bourbon, subtle vanilla beans. Nose is really hot and boozy though.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with loads of nutty pecans and walnuts. Nice pleasant gentle bitterness and chocolate. The rum is much more balanced with very nice slightly hot finish.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, creamy, but boozy and hot.

O - Overall this was a very solid stout, excellent nutty notes but the rum is super hot. Still, this is quite good.

Nose big rum and almost calvados, tons of spiced and raw bit strap rum, very light pecan nut, light roasty and dark chocolate, touch of coffee, as it warms lots of nutty pecan, vanilla, cocoa,

Taste very rich, tons of dark chocolate cocoa, into some nutty pecans but not a ton, little roasty, some alcohol tingle and flavor, big vanilla, rich earthy vanilla, caramel, light barrel, some fruity notes on the background leading into big rum, spiced as fruity rum, some perfumey alcohol

Mouth is thicker bod, fudgey, hot tingly alcohol, medium light carb,

Overall pretty good, but hot boozy and missed some of the things it promised

 

 

 

 

 

 

We've joined up with Brandon Tolbert and the team of explorers at Safety Team Brewing in Virginia to navigate the mysteries of a rum barrel treatment on a rum cake-inspired Imperial Porter. An early foundation of pecans and walnuts coupled with finishing provisions of Fortunato cacao nibs and toasted pecans steer this expedition toward quick disappearance.

Imperial Porter brewed with pecans and walnuts, aged in (80%) rum and (20%) bourbon barrels with Madagascar vanilla beans, then finished with cacao nibs and toasted pecans.
