Notes: Vanilla-finished bourbon barrel-aged stout, sprinkled with a nostalgic blend of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and allspice on a bittersweet molasses base.

On tap at Provisions in Orange, CA.

Damn thing almost glowed a golden black (if that is possible) but maybe it’s just the hipster lighting. Smell is a bit odd. It’s super spicy with holiday essence like Santa is like when he’s trying to slay Mrs. Claus, but it’s also a bit weird. Like, something artificial or chemical that I cannot detect. But it’s slight. Taste is the same. Christmas in my mouth like the cookies my grandmama used to bake for me. Not bad. Feel isn’t the thickest, but it’s still pretty solid like a Jiffy Lube oil change.

Raul ain’t trippin’ here. It’s just aite.

500 mL bottle poured into a teku glass.

Black with a thick mocha brown head. Good head retention for the abv.

Nose: Very strong presence from the spices, vanilla, and bourbon barrel. Cinnamon and ginger dominate the spice profile giving it a definite gingerbread feel. Some alcohol is noticeable.

Taste: Fundamental Observation meets gingerbread cookies, albeit with a bit more booziness. Extremely well rounded between the vanilla, bourbon, and spices. Some alcohol heat on the finish along with lingering ginger and clove.

Feel: Full-bodied, smooth, low carbonation.

A moderately dense mocha foam over a black body settles to a short but persistent blanket curled at the edges.

This smells like Red Hots and molasses, but taste is pretty spot on gingerbread cookies dipped in bourbon.

I'm not a huge molasses or gingerbread fan, but this is pretty tasty in spite of myself. It's kind of astonishing how well this works, especially when compared to my past experiences with gingerbread inspired beers, most of which I've absolutely hated. There's even that toasted, almost charred flavor you often get from the cookies, which is emulating a dusty crunch in my mind. However the body has a smooth, round heft to it, with a soft, mild carbonation that comes to a semi-dry finish that has a sharp but quickly dissipating bite in the swallow.

Objectively speaking, this is truly a delicious brew while nailing the inspiration. And it's immensely drinkable, especially for it's ABV.

thank gawd for the chocolate cuz i F'ing ABHOR allspice.... ever since Stone's Seven Seven Seven.... i cant even hear the word! and it's present here but so far in not-so-gaggingly amounts? Regardless, screw christmas if i have to endure this crap every year... looks great on the pour! but this is gonna kill my evening.... fortunately (or gratuitously), that wont be the only thing. so, even though i cannot stand the allspice, it is presented so well in the aroma that i have to give it 4.25 in smell. i mean, this is PROFESSIONALLY DONE. Bottle Logic is getting SOOOooooo polished, even if their stouts are becoming sweeter by the year.... the balance of spices is so well done! a little bit of cut on the tongue due to the spice but relatively smoothly transitioned from the aroma. still a little over-bearing but i havent tossed it yet. i was expecting this one to be their worst (least appreciated?) of the year (and i think i'm right), but dang, it's almost drinkable by someone with more issues than Nurse Ratchett (like me) and im still filling high marks so props to BL!

Appearance: Arrives the color of espresso with a one finger beige cap; good retention and a few shards of lace

Smell: Chocolate and gingerbread tones with hints of roast and Bourbon

Taste: Chocolate and gingerbread forward, with each of the spices (cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and allspice) coming through on the palate; a hint of molasses to add richness, underneath; the Bourbon arrives, in the middle, to envelop the flavors and provide a complex finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and creamy with moderate carbonation

Overall: An impressive beer; it has been a while since I have tried Hardywood's version but I am sure this would compare favorably
