Reddish dark brown yet see through with a decent tan colored head. Lots of bubbles seen rising through this beer keeping that head going a bit. Scent is caramel malt maybe even some unsweetened dark chocolate in there. Sort of mildly caramel malt, maybe a little dark fruit and sort of a quick finish. The flavor is ok just it doesn't have very much depth there and no tricks to the finish. Carbonation is medium with some creaminess to the mouthfeel. Not bad.

Drinking this in an effort to try more Belgian styles I have seemingly ignored, and I decided to start with Flying Fish like any good hometown boy (hometown being NJ... yeah, it's a stretch.)

A creamy, off-white head and a reddish-dark brown color when poured. Sitting around, it has good head retention and decent lacing. Quite impressive actually.

A nose with caramel, nuts, and Belgian yeasty character greets you when poured into a glass. Also has some notes of raisins, and a little toast as well. Usually I try to disregard what the bottle is telling you it will taste or smell like, but they are pretty accurate on the raisins and caramel qualities. Unless they mean how it tastes in which case I still need to see....

As soon as it hits the palate I feel it's really leanign on the Belgian yeast for a light, crisp raisin-y flavor. Slightly spicy, and the maltiness is playing along well, but it also feels a little lacking, like it's flavor is missing something. Nothing really pops but it's got a good profile of flavors to it.

The mouthfeel is very creamy and slightly spicy which is good enough for me for it to be great, but again, I sense a slight lack in the body to its detriment.

All in all, I actually enjoy this beer a lot. It could be more vibrant and flavorful, but it is certainly a good attempt that has more going for it then against it.

Good, complex malt character. A hint of alcohol up front with some caramel sweetness. Very well balanced and tasty. A good substitute if you cant find a true trappist dubbel brewed by or under monks. Overall a great belgian ale.

Flying Fish Dubbel - This beer is complex, yet straight forward.
Typically it is difficult to find a good Dubbel that is not an import, if you find that this is the case for you I would recommend this you look no further. This Belgian Style Beer is a beautiful caricature of its inspiration. with 9.1 IBU’s this Beer is SWEET, very chocolaty, and malty. Its Dark Amber in color with a 1 finger vanilla colored head. The nose of the beer is very nutty and smooth. The carbonation is somewhat light but it only ads to the charm. At 7.2& ABV I has enough kick to to keep you coming back.

Not sure what this is a "Dubbel" of.

The color is nice. Kind of an amber-red. No head to speak of. The smell does nothing for me. A bit bitter and medicinal.

It tastes watery, and the flavor is vaguely unpleasant. I don't get any "Belgian" qualities. The flavor doesn't invite additional drinking.

Maybe it's a palate thing. Maybe it's a bad batch. Maybe it would be okay with pizza or some other heavy food. But on its own, it's not working for me.

Fact is that of the 3 or 4 beers I've tried from this brewery, I haven't found any that I genuinely like. And this one... I may or may not be able to finish.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Thanks Joanne for buying a sixer for me.

Pours a clear amber body with a white one finger head that reduces quickly to leave no lacing and a layer of retention.

Aromas are fruity and estery, bananas and wheat, spices, sweet caramel. Taste is sweet dark fruits, banana, belgian yeast, candied sugar and toffee. Mouthfeel is lacking, this is undercarbonated.

Pretty good, lacking in the mouthfeel category but the taste is there and on par with other dubbels.

Pretty mediocre. Drinkable but has a weird soda flavor to it. Almost as if its a flat coke. Very thin, little carbonation when I poured it in the glass. It tastes like it was trying to be more complex but didn't quite get there.

Red/brown color, the aroma is real light and subtle .oddly it looks a bit like cola in color and at first it almost tastes the same. After a while the different tastes come out of spice and malt.if you hold to tried and true Belgians you may not care for this one. I really liked it and thought it was a nice attempt at the Belgian style but unique in its own way.sorry I only got one bottle

I'm actually getting this for $8 a 6-pack, so I really wasn't expecting much, but this is quite passable.

It's an easy-drinking mild and dry malty sort of number with a slight sweetness and - while by no means a great dubbel - it's less than half the price of many of the quality entries. There really isn't anything offensive about it, being well balanced if lacking in complexity.

I see some reviews saying that they're getting it for $10 a 6-pack, so I wouldn't recommend it there, but I'm struggling to come up with a large number of better options at $8. Many times I'll start with something cheaper like this and then cap it at the end of the evening with a higher quality beer - this will undoubtedly be called upon again for duty under those circumstances.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip

L: Semi-opaque mahogany pour. Thinner than expected off-white head. Only modest lacing.

S: Caramel and dark sugars... raisin bread and spice.

T/F: Toasted candy sugars and some dark fruits... off-sweet to start but not cloying. A little bit of spice. Slightly medicinal and yeasty. Well carbonated... zesty in mouthfeel. Leaves a bit of stickiness on the tongue.

O: A fair stab at the style and easily drinkable, but doesn't approach the complexity of a real Belgian Dubbel. I'd have it again but can't say that I would seek it out.
