Style: English Strong Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
NJ has always had a rich brewing heritage-20 years before the state was named by the English in 1664, there was a Dutch brewery in what is now Hoboken. We've chosen to celebrate this 350th anniversary with a historic style: English Stock Ale.

English pale malts and flaked barley meld with blackstrap molasses for a hearty and complex malt flavor. For hops, we used Cluster, the first hop cultivated in the US. The beer finishes with the more modern Simcoe and Centennial. The latter gives a deep piney flavor and aroma, a nod to a state treasure-the Pine Barrens.

7/11 Pours medium amber, orange rust tinged, white foam climbs up the side. Malty resiny nose. Taste opens hoppy, becomes sour, then evolves into a pine/molasses blend. Natural tree flavor, with molasses backstop. Great flavor balance, loads of character.

A dark amber color, light head and lacing.

Very little aroma other than the malt.

Taste follows the smell with lots of malt flavor.

Light, little carbonation and not much kick.

Average beer.

- Old english stock ale brewed with molasses.

A: In a chalice a mushroomy large beige crown of 3 inches plus sits above a tarnished oxidized orange colored body of good clarity revealing mid-size carbonation bubbles in heavy concentration. Head retention is superb, very lengthy in its stay, slowly pitting on the surface caving to a mountainous structure. Thick spongy coating for lace. very good presentation.

S: On the nose was fresh wet sticky pine and sweet molasses. Soft caramel toasted bread fresh from the oven with some hints of fresh greenery (shrubery) in the middle. Fairly aggressive hopping aroma per style.

T: Flavor was sweet caramel-pine, citrusy hops and floral notes. Sweet molasses upfront with some sweet chocolate and alcohol notes. The beer progresses to a nice bittering effect, like an ESB, piney hop attributes, dry caramel-scotch, with a dried earthy bittering. Some fresh greenery, dried molasses, and dry toasted sweetness really stands out. Piney hops on the finish.

M: Full bodied, honey consistency, dry toasty mash, carbonation is light to medium in strength.

O: Overall a very good hoppy and piney character, drinks like an ESB and a worthy tribute to my home state. Well balanced, nice deep malty lush body, with good piney hops paying tribute to the pine barrens of NJ.

A: The beer is clear yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a two finger high frothy off white head that has very good retention properties and hardly died down, leaving thick rings of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of molasses are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has some flavors of molasses, but there are also strong notes of citrusy and piney hops, which contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness and negate any sweetness from the malts and molasses. The hoppy flavors linger into the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a very nice balance between the malts and hops. No traces of alcohol are perceptible so it is also very drinkable.
