NJ has always had a rich brewing heritage-20 years before the state was named by the English in 1664, there was a Dutch brewery in what is now Hoboken. We've chosen to celebrate this 350th anniversary with a historic style: English Stock Ale.
English pale malts and flaked barley meld with blackstrap molasses for a hearty and complex malt flavor. For hops, we used Cluster, the first hop cultivated in the US. The beer finishes with the more modern Simcoe and Centennial. The latter gives a deep piney flavor and aroma, a nod to a state treasure-the Pine Barrens.

A: The beer is clear yellowish amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a two finger high frothy off white head that has very good retention properties and hardly died down, leaving thick rings of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of molasses are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has some flavors of molasses, but there are also strong notes of citrusy and piney hops, which contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness and negate any sweetness from the malts and molasses. The hoppy flavors linger into the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a very nice balance between the malts and hops. No traces of alcohol are perceptible so it is also very drinkable.

I have been hanging onto this one and almost six years seems like plenty. Pours lively for its age, and the yeasty, bready nose is simililarly promising. Really complex and balanced in the flavor, with an intense smoothness and glaze of alcohol. There is the piney hops and stiffness matching up againsat the molasses and crystal malts. The yeast and funkiness comes out a bit as it warms. Unlikely to ever see another. Hats off to the Garden State, see you in another 350.

A dark amber color, light head and lacing.
Very little aroma other than the malt.
Taste follows the smell with lots of malt flavor.
Light, little carbonation and not much kick.
Average beer.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours red orange with a small white head. Smells of very sweet berries and grain, inviting. Tastes of great malt background, berries, and slight citrus. Beer is nicely carbonated, medium bodied, very smooth. Overall an above average beer.

Excellent orange and caramel color with little carbonation and a thick head that dissipates quickly. Very malty smell is good but the ABV is so high you get alcohol wiffs as well. Taste is brilliant. You will get a bit of alcohol taste as the ABV is super high - it tastes like a Belgian Triple only without the citrus.

From a bottle, pours a hazy orange gold color with a sticky off-white head.
The nose is honey, a little pine, some hop character, citrus and booze. This smells like an alochol bomb. The flavor follows suit to the smell, only sweeter. Lots of honey, some pine dryness, a little fruit, and tea leaves.
The alcohol really takes over here, but its tasty, just really strong and abrasive.

My buddies and I tried this at the brewery as part of a flight, and we all really enjoyed it.
A few weeks later they had it on clearance at the brewery for $20 for a case of 12 bombers. They normally go for $8.99 each in the beer store. Unbelievable bargain! Three of us each bought a case. Kenny gave a bunch of 'em away as Christmas presents, and then went back and bought a second case.
Well now it turns out that everybody hates this stuff, except me. I do find it challenging to get through. I guess English Stock Ale brewed with molasses is not "it".
It is obviously well crafted, and brewer worked this out for the NJ 350th anniversary. Oh Well.
The Review:
Looks great, coppery orange, with nice lacing.
Smell: Not strong or particularly distinct. Very "beer like".
Taste: Leaves some bitterness on the sides of my tongue, Although it's not a hoppy sort of bitter. I find it heavy and malty. Lots of flavor. If there is molasses sweetness, I can't find it. It goes down easily enough, but I'd rather be drinking the FU Sandy, or the Redfish, or the Abbe Dubbel, or a Schlitz.
