Style: Braggot

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 15.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Exit 3 is the gateway to a lot of farmland, so we’re using one the state’s favorite crops– blueberries. Braggot is an ancient style– written about since the 12th century. This Braggot features local blueberries and honey, a very limited amount of hops and is fermented with Belgian-style yeast. The result is a straw colored beer with blueberry highlights. On the first sip you will note a light sweetness along with citrus notes followed by a well rounded malt character. The beer has a medium full body.

L- Poured gently into a brandy snifter. Almost no head, just a little around the edge of the glass. Description says it has a straw color but I would say more of a gold-amber color.

S- Smells like a belgian ale. There's a faint blueberry scent. Amazingly for a 15% ABV beer, there was very little booziness and only towards the tail end of a long sniff.

T- Interesting. I had to really try to discern the blueberry. Mostly it tasted like a mellow Belgian ale with a hint of booziness. It leaves a sweet aftertaste.

F- Thicker than I expected and maybe a little oily? Not unpleasant though. For such a high ABV, there was more carbonation than I expected which was a pleasant surprise.

O- My hat's off to Flying Fish. This is a dangerous beer. Eminently drinkable with less booziness than some 9%er's that I've had. Tread softly but enjoy.

NO. As in, there's NO way this is 15% ABV. Compare drinking this to 2 BCBS, there is no comparison. Doesn't drink as big as Lagunitas High Westified at 12.1% either.

Regardless, looks good and smells great. Taste is overwhelmed by the Belgian yeast, typical bubblegum. No blueberry taste at all. Not much else going on here. Barely strong enough for the $8 and next time ...

Pass.

Taste is deep honey, toffee, earthy hops, light sour fruit, and faint berries as it warms. This one did not feel like it was 15% ABV. The fruit was not as pronounced as I was hoping it would be. Above average, but not sure if I would get this again.

Copper colored with some moderate sedimentary haze. There's a fingernail of beige around the rim and just a trace of it elsewhere. Lots of vibrant carbonation bubbles. The aroma is of wildflowers honey and blueberries. I'm tasting honey throughout the palate with the blueberries offering a suggestion of tartness. There's a citrus note at mid palate that provides a gentle rush of bitterness. The mouth is highly carbonated, dense, lightly oily and dry.

Pours pale amber with moderate head and decent lacing as I drink out of flight glass. Smell is grain, sour, and berry. Taste is same, with much stronger blueberry. Feel is a touch dry, but nowhere near 15%. I kid you not, I just looked at th ABV on the menu after guessing this was maybe 6 or 7 something. Almost no alcohol taste...berry and bread notes shine through. Would I have again? You bet.

Thanks to my sister for this one.
This was poured into a chalice.
The appearance was a semi-cloudy golden color with a half finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off mildly.
The aroma centered around a blend of honey, sweet blueberry flesh, bready malt, light cream, and a touch of grass.
The flavor was fairly sweet throughout combining all of the previously mentioned aromas. Semi-sticky sweet honey and blueberry aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a noticeable stickiness to it. Light expected boozy heat penetrating my tongue. Mild honey and blueberry finish.
Overall, as a fan of blueberries, I'd say yes. As a braggot, well all I can tell anyone reading this is that a braggot is the beer version of a mead. Me, this is good enough to come back to.

One of my faves. The blueberry totally dissipates the feel of a 15% abv beer. I could almost drink this in the summer. Pretty sweet but not overbearing. Nice full body too. Poured a growler into a snifter and it was delicious. New Jersey!

Alcohol is very present. Almost like a liqueor. Sticky sweet. Very interesting. Not necessarily blueberry, but a strong fruit presence.

Excessively sweet and boozy. Notes of blueberries, but they’re artificial tasting. Structure is really odd. Possibly one of the worst beers I’ve ever had.

A - Slightly more than a fingers worth of audibly fizzy tightly packed off white colored head... Limited retention gives way to a thin but full veil of lacing and thin collar... As the session proceeds the lacing recedes further leaving only some splotchiness... Mostly still with just a slightly sluggish carbonation bubble here and there... The color is a sleek highly glossed light gold with a distinctive amber hue...

S - A fairly interesting nose from the get go... Belgian yeast... Honey... Some distinctive barnyard funk... Perhaps some light blueberry notes but not much more... Good complexity as each whiff yields a slightly new dimension...

T - Belgian yeast to start... The honey is next, most prominent and consistent throughout... Some light artificial blueberry sweetness... The funkiness lingers beneath the surface... There are also some faint seltzer / salty qualities... There is a faint herbal medicinal presence on the deep finish...

M - A rather interesting mouthfeel... Somewhere between medium and full bodied... Dense and sticky... Some spry carbonation at the outset... The finish is slightly chalky... Goes down easily enough but the finish is a bit rough around the edges...

D - An interest and enjoyable offering, but I'm not sure this is something I would revisit with any regularity... Pleasant enough, but the finish - in terms of both taste and mouthfeel - are a bit rough around the edges... Hides the lofty 15% ABV exceptionally well...
