Style: Tripel

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This inspired Belgian-style Trippel has a hazy golden hue and the aroma of citrus with hints of banana and clove. Predominant Belgian malt flavors give way to a subdued bitterness in the finish.

Clear bronze. White head Layer of slight film stays throughout.
Smell is some hops. Tons of clove. Spicy grains. Taste is slight pine and citrus, TONS of clove. Feel is dry not too spicy.

Overall I like it. American pine and citrus hops in the Belgian tripel. It's a good beer. I didn't think Belgian ipa while drinking it. I didn't think of a specific style in general but it's a clove, citrus and pine spiced tripel. Not on an ipa pine level at all.

Main thing I would note is that this absolutely is not a tripel or even an 'American Tripel'. It's very reminiscent of Flying Dog's Raging bitch, which is listed as a "Belgian IPA", though I would say it's substantially better than that one (I really dislike Raging Bitch for a number of reasons).

Exit 4 is amber, whiffs more of resin/citrus/pine and the hops bite greatly overpowers any yeast notes or sweetness. I would be comfortable calling it an IPA that attempts to be milder and sneak in a bunch of undercover ABV, which it does reasonably well. However, like Raging Bitch, it does have a bit of a lingering after-taste which betrays that high ABV.

Overall it's OK and it has to be said that I'm not a huge fan of this style, but if you want something that's 'maybe' influenced by a Belgian but tastes more like an IPA, I would give this a proper recommendation for you.

For myself, not so much: an actual Tripel with a complexity built on yeast, please.

Pours a relatively clear gold color with a brown tint, almost amber but not quite, with a thin layer of head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is mostly composed of yeast, malt, some bready characteristics, and a faint hint of spices such as clove on the back end. Taste is a surprisingly huge burst of banana and clove right off the bat, with the alcohol being extremely well hidden. Combines with all the bready yeasty goodness for a near-perfect finish. Overall, it may not be the best looking or smelling Tripel, but when it comes to taste, which is what really matters, it's one of my favorites.

Bottle to "hard rock" glass.

LOOK: darker yellow, orange hue. Small white head. Suds stick around, clinging to glass.
AROMA: apricot, pineapple, bread, yeast. Very sweet and fruity.
TASTE: apricot, lemon, peach, light yeast, late warming alcohol burn.
FEEL: full bodied and a little sticky. Light carbonation.

My kind of belgian. Strong, fruitty, bready, with minimal Wang.

A-color is a clear golden yellow with a fingers worth of white head that leaves a light layer of lace

S-pale malt, light fruits and spices, some citrus and yeast

T-taste is similar to the smell with a pale malt backbone, citrus fruits, apples, spices, yeast, and a slightly bitter finish

M-medium body, crisp carbonation

Overall an above average American Tripel, maybe a tad too sweet but has enough bitterness to keep it from being cloying

Look (4.25): This "American Trippel" is a beautiful golden tangerine hue. A white foamy head that has very fine carbonation. Carbonation seems to disipate quickly. (It's bottle conditioned!)

Smell (4): Citrus and tropical fruits. More specifically, banana and lemon with vanilla floral notes. Honey and booze with some sweet caramel malt in the background.

Taste (4): Big fruit bananas and tropical citrus hit your palate upfront. Nice malty roundness to help carry you to a slightly bitter ending. Definitely some heavy booze, less spice then I expect.

Mouthfeel (4.5): Creamy and smooth. Medium plus bodied. Light acid flavors, but more then usual for a Trippel which I welcome. More on the dry side.

Overall (4.25): Plus a million points for being what I consider my hometown brew! The Exit 4 label is basically a map of how to get to my house!
