Exit 16 Wild Rice Double IPAExit 16 Wild Rice Double IPA
Notes: Although usually identified with landfills and pipelines, the Hackensack Meadowlands is an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we’ve brewed this beer with wild rice. We also added organic brown and white rice, as well as pils and pale malts.

Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more–generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine. This beer pairs extremely well with spicy foods and all kinds of seafood. And of course, it’s quite enjoyable all by itself.

750ml bottle received from beer4242 in trade. Thanks! Poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - Pours a hazy pale orangey gold color with a thin white head that leaves behind a bit of sticky lacing.

S - Intense...very intense grapefruit with some peaches in it for good measure. This really reminds me heavily of Sculpin.

T - Taste is much like the aroma - very heavy on grapefruit and peaches...malt is light and a bit bready. Excellent IPA overall - very hop forward.

M - A bit on the thin side of medium bodied...medium carbonation. A bit watery but with some sticky resiny hops hitting all areas of the mouth.

D - Lovin' this beer. Tons and tons of grapefruity. Excellent IPA - wish it was more available. Could definitely be drinking this one all night.

Poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy, lighter golden color with a thin white heading. Left good lacing throughout the tasting. Not quite as frothy and thick as most IIPA's.

Smell as soon as the cap was popped I could smell the sweetness. After my first whiff out of my tulip a mango, and papaya aroma filled the nostrils. Quickly followed up by a sweet and toasty maltiness where it just touches down and is taken over by a Heavy citrus hop aroma. A subtle smokiness I believe is in there as well.

Taste is quite surprising after the initial rush of lighter, sweeter tropical fruits, a kind of dry and toasted taste fills the tastebuds only to make wave for a stinging citrusy hoppiness.

Mouth is lighter bodied which absolutely amazing being that this is 8.2%. Not heavy and syrupy like alot of the IIPA's. Very crisp and dry hoppy feeling is left in the mouth for a little bit.

Well I've had alot of IIPA's so far but this one stands out as one of my favorites. This is exceptionally done and so enjoyable. I hope Flying Fish keeps this on there permanent list.

12 oz bottle, 'Use by" date of 5-11-14.

appears a crystal clear pale straw color, soapy bone-white head. looks like a light lager. fruity hop nose. citrus, grassy, orange. some corn too. minimal malt flavor in the taste, clean hop taste. crisp. earthy, not as much citrus flavor as in the aroma. thin body, high level of fizzy carbonation.

overall - it's okay, but not how I like by DIPA's.

Solid DIPA from Flying Fish, one to make you proud to live in NJ. I do favor their FU Sandy though ...

I had Exit 16 when it was first released a few years ago and it was excellent. I just picked up a six pack recently and decide to review it. So glad that they finally came out with sixers as promised.

A- poured into tall pislner glass with .(just wanted to build up a thicker headan aggresive pour at the end). Nice foamy head with a quarter inch retention leaving nice lacing on the glass. It is light yellow color with tiny carbonation bubbles.

S- very hoppy. Can detect lemon and pine immediately

T- taste lemon and grapefruit and a some bitterness at the end.

M-carbonation is light but not weak. Bitterness kicks in and then a dry finish. Makes my mouth water for more.

O- This is a wonderful brew. Its crisp and refreshing. Its abv is high but not noticeable in the taste. I hope to see more six-packs in the future.

You get a finger of bone white foam, the head has a fairly dense weave but has so-so retention, the lacing comes in broad sheets which slowly slide down the glass side. Clean, pure golden color, not especially vivid but bright and shiny, the bubbles are fat and dispersed, slowly rising to the surface. Powerful nose that explodes out of the glass with a sweet mélange of tangelo and pink grapefruit citrus, very floral, pine sap and honey, underneath is the stiffening presence of pretzel dough and salt, somewhat chocolaty, the nectarine, peach, pineapple, papaya fruit persists quite well, gregariously rich. Full-bodied, thick and close to fluffy, pushes across the palate like a rug unfolding. The carbonation has some punch yet no way can it clean up the underlying sweetness of all that grapefruit, tangerine, lime citrus as well as peach, apricot, mango, pineapple fruit. No noticeable herbaceous edge, perhaps a slight minerality and it may be that the rice contributes to a drier finish and overall smoothness. Alcohol managed well. Not particularly complex nor challenging, however, if you enjoy a sweeter and softer style of IPA then this is pretty much a slam dunk.

A: Pear skin yellow in color with haze, and a bright white head.

S: Oh man that's lovely. Fruity with tropical fruit, citrus, and pine. Perhaps the best word to describe the aroma is juicy.

T: Like drowning in citrus and tropical fruits.. Bright, juicy, and just enough bitterness to keep it from cloying. The rice is a little hard to pick out, but it is there in the finish. This is dangerous.

M: Medium bodied with high carbonation, and a somewhat dry finish.

O: Overall this is a damn fine beer.. Tasty as all hell, and dangerously drinkable.

12 o bottle into tulip. best by 09/06/13.

A: very pale body. paler than your typical DIPA. bright white head, frothy. good retention. thick spotted lacing.

S: a lot of melon and cantaloupe. a glimpse of sweet, unfermented sugar. a unique blend of hops.

T: similar to the nose, a bit of sweetness. citrus and melon. subtle and a little bit of pepper in there with the fruity hops.

M: carb is mellow, but not too much so. works well. medium body.

D: very drinkable for a double ipa. dangerous even. super smooth, lightly floral, decent citrus.
