Exit 16 Wild Rice Double IPAExit 16 Wild Rice Double IPA

Brewed by:
Flying Fish Brewing Company
New Jersey, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Although usually identified with landfills and pipelines, the Hackensack Meadowlands is an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we’ve brewed this beer with wild rice. We also added organic brown and white rice, as well as pils and pale malts.

Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more–generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine. This beer pairs extremely well with spicy foods and all kinds of seafood. And of course, it’s quite enjoyable all by itself.

12 oz bottle

Pours clear golden, coarse white suds for a head.

Smells of honey, biscuit, pine and herbal hops.

Flavor is of biscuit with some honey malt sweetness, maybe a hint of maple. Hops are mostly piney with a little citrus and herbal spiciness. Woody finish.

Medium to full body, stinging carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

Really solid DIPA, nothing at all wrong with it, but not particularly memorable compared to other very good DIPAs. I just think with IPAs and DIPAs, you really have to do something to stand apart these days to be excellent. It's such an overrepresented style. Still, you certainly won't regret getting a pack of these if you see them.

My first time trying a Flying Fish offering - not a bad way to get introduced to a new (to me) brewer...

The IPA pours out a thick white head with good lacing that follows all the way down the pint glass. The smell was the best part of this brew for me - a strong scent of oranges blending well with the advertised wild rice. The mouthfeel had a distinct astringent-ness to it, and it had a medium-bodied and slightly carbonated touch, even some smoothness to it as well. Though it had a strong taste of citrus, some spice, and of course the IPA bitterness one would expect, the bitterness wins out and the equal blending I look for just wasn't there. I have to say, I've had better double IPAs, but this one at 8% ABV is very drinkable - so much so you gotta be careful not to slam more than a few...

I try to review every good beer that comes out of NJ. Just returned from Carton, and now trying this great DIPA which is bold enough to proclaim the addition of wide rice. Great west-coast style DIPA.

A) Pours 1 finger of dense, off white head that fades to a ring and clings in sheets of lace. Over a blonde, totally clear body with scarce visible bubbles.

S) I find citrus, myriad tropical fruit, marmalade on a light malt backdrop.

T) Follows smell but much bigger. Abundant citrus, mangoes, tangerines, and passion fruit. Then shifting to pine and sweet blonde malt, coming into the finish with a small pucker of bitterness. Busy, complex, perhaps too busy.

F) Surprisingly creamy, smooth, drying, and bitter. Medium for the style with a low amount of carbonation, not syrupy, lighter than most DIPAs, and finishes dry and sticky.

O) A great beer from NJ. A bit cleaner, dryer than most DIPAs with no loss of flavor. A sipper.

Copper colored with an inch of densely packed beige head. Light lacing. The aroma is of grassy to earthy and faint pine with a grainy rice note. I'm tasting earthy to piney hops with grainy rice and light malt in the mix. The mouth is very dry and lightly sticky.

drink by 9/1/17 listed on the bottle so i'm assuming pretty fresh

pours a nice gold with a solid head, looks good

smell is certainly different for a dIPA. i get muted coffee with light and sweet hops.

the flavor is very smooth with nice hop clarity. easy to drink dIPA. not a ton of malt. not sure i "taste" the rice in this but it is a smooth dIPA. goes down easy but not a ton of flavor in any direction.

not bad at all. nothing special but an easy drinker for a 4pack. Flying Fish has some really good stuff and i've had some bad stuff but this is much closer to good

L. Clear super-light golden. Small fluffy head drops to a nice film and makes a healthy lacing.
S. Smells of honey, lemon, tart pear, more bright citrus.
T. Sweet and bitter lemon, pineapple, ruby red grapefruit, honey, bread, slight spice. Bitter melon aftertaste. Really tasty.
F. Nice medium body, dry and a bit of resin on the finish, just enough carbonation.
O. The "Exit Series" variety pack is definitely solid, in my opinion. I am really respecting Flying Fish Brewing Company lately, with a really nice double ipa here. Cheers!

DATA: January 22, 2017... OCCASION: finishing a weekend with another strong Flying Fish... GLASSWARE: Duvel tulip...pours a crystal clear golden body that sports a central, vicious swirl... a spongy, fuzzy half-finger head that smears to uneven swirls and billows... mango, tangerine, and pine are fresh and alluring... biscuit and cracker suggest balance... rather straightforward, and that is okay... purses the lips in bitterness, kicks the throat with some spiciness, and warms calmly... the flavor profile is tangerine, mango, pepper, pine and some phenol...light bread doesn't interfere with the sharp bitterness... a clean, smooth double IPA that finishes with pleasant effervescence and maintains its strength with the feel of a dry chardonnay...

12 oz bottle..."use by" 7-3-16...so,,,sadly this beer is out of date...OK, I'll review but go easy...give it the benefit of the doubt if necessary....

Pours lighter amber, off white mini cap, leaves some fine lacing

Resiny hop nose...on the pungent side...

More resin infused hops on the palate, crisp and tasty...

Solidly flavorful DIPA, pungent hops in full effect here ...worth a try

Bottle to "hard rock" glass.
LOOK: pilsener like look, big white head, lasts.
AROMA: pine, wood, leafy earthy notes.
TASTE: bitter pine resin, I don't really taste or smell any of the advertised fruity notes that would balance this a little.
FEEL: Medium body.

Not my thing. I can appreciate trying to make a beer with rice in the malt, but this misses for me.
