Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Although usually identified with landfills and pipelines, the Hackensack Meadowlands is an amazingly diverse ecosystem providing vital animal and plant habitat. In a nod to a once common food plant here, we’ve brewed this beer with wild rice. We also added organic brown and white rice, as well as pils and pale malts.

Rice helps the beer ferment dry to better showcase the five different hops we added. Lots and lots of them. We then dry-hopped this Double IPA with even more–generous additions of Chinook and Citra hops to create a nose that hints at tangerine, mango, papaya and pine. This beer pairs extremely well with spicy foods and all kinds of seafood. And of course, it’s quite enjoyable all by itself.

Bottle to "hard rock" glass.
LOOK: pilsener like look, big white head, lasts.
AROMA: pine, wood, leafy earthy notes.
TASTE: bitter pine resin, I don't really taste or smell any of the advertised fruity notes that would balance this a little.
FEEL: Medium body.

Not my thing. I can appreciate trying to make a beer with rice in the malt, but this misses for me.

Picked one up as a throw in on a trade and I think I know why. Jerseys beer scene is getting better all the time but this one was a bit of a let down. Nothing offensive here but nothing that would make me want to pick one up again. For a DIPA it was very bland tasting.

12 oz bottle, was excited to try this beer while visiting family in Cherry Hill, NJ. I love drinking local beers when I can when I travel. Found the DIPA to have pine flavors the most, and was hoping for a bit more tropical flavors, or citrus from the Citra hops, but overall, I'd get this beer again.

From a bottle, pours a relatively clear gold with a two finger bright white foamy head. Aromas of hops and citrus. Taste is more malty with definite grapefruit flavors with some pine. Well carbonated it has a medium body and a bitter finish.

The look is a regular lager color, aroma is a bit of mango-pine, a little hoppy malty. the taste is complex, just not as Double IPA as I like. Maybe it is the rice. I am going all 3.75's.

Had at the brewery on 7/9, pours a darker gold color but staying completely clear. Big fizzy head rises up and leaves behind a rocky formation.

Smell is a balanced mixture of malts and hops. Bitter, dank, pine, and grapefruit hops with a pretty noticeable malt bill. Flavorwise is pretty similar, it's definitely a balanced DIPA. Honey, lemon, and doughy sweetness from the malts, bitter pine and grapefruit from the hops.

It's a bigger beer than takes awhile to drink. Overall I thought this was a solid DIPA, but if you're hunting for hops the Daylight Savings IPA was better.

Interestingly, hadn't recalled drinking/reviewing this in the past:
I'm very glad I had forgotten however, as I found it to be a really
enjoyable beer: I in fact stated at the table that I could easily
swap this in for DFH 90, one of my favs.

(Old review below, which does suggest that my initial experience
may have been ruined by a bad food-pairing, which I've probably
been victim to in the past with others as well.)

Past review: (6/10/16) L:(4) S:(3.5) T:(3.25) F:(3) O:(3.5)
This started off promising, but may have been tainted by an overly sweet salad dressing
the beer was paired with; As such, the malt was a bit muted and overall the beer came
off a bit one dimensional. Very pretty glass presentation. Nose was largely citrus and pine.

poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass. best by 4/29/16, so 3 weeks past it's cut off date.

pours very nicely, solid golden body with large fluffy white head. carbonation is light, lacing is excellent. there are some minute floaties.

aroma is somewhat catty with a sweetish aroma.

As can be expected, the hops are muted, they do come through at times, but a washed away by a very pleasant malt sweetness.

finish still has some bite, medium mouth.

Overall, only just past it's prime, and still quite tasty, just not the hop assault it likely once was.
