Stop seven on our multi-year trip to explore the state of New Jersey through its beer and culture, is Exit 9, best known as the Rutgers University exit. The state’s university, Rutgers, began in 1771 with classes held at a local tavern though by 1810, students were banned from frequenting “beer and oyster houses.” Alumni include Nobel Laureates, astronauts, brewery founders, authors, actors and perhaps most notably, the cartoon character Mr. Magoo.

To celebrate Exit 9, we brewed a richly flavored red beer crafted with a variety of domestic and imported malts and a classic American yeast strain. Assertively hopped with Amarillo, Centennial, Chinook and Citra, the bouquet has complex notes of citrus and tropical fruits, with an appropriate bitterness in the finish. Serve it with spicy foods (try gumbo or curry), a rich blue or sharp cheddar cheese or enjoy it by itself.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tulip glass. Served at 45-50 degrees.
A: The beer is on the low end of the color spectrum for a red ale. More of a dark gold. Very thin heads that disappears fast and leaves decent lacing.
S: Malt foreword. With some hops on the backend.
T: Malt hits my tongue first followed by hops. Judging from the description on the bottle I was expecting some more hops. There are a few citrus hops listed but they dont really shine in this beer. They are present but not the main focus on this beer.
M: This beer has a med-high mouthfeel. Its rich and sticky.
D: Drinkability is good. Not exactly what I was hoping for but it is tasty. I would like to try again hopefully on tap.

Another example how recipes change, as everything on the pint can matches the initial description, but the ABV is listed as 7 %, not nine. Now poured into a clear glass Imperial pint mug, a brew of copper-amber color is observed. It's bright and more translucent than opaque. A very light biege head foams up on top, receding unevenly. It smells like a red ale, with plenty of malt and just a bit of hoppiness. The hops bring no where near the astringent quality found in IPAs and other heavily hopped beers. But, to the taste, there certainly are more hop characteristics than to the smell. Beginning sweetly, the hops take over and by the finish, make their statement. The bitterness is sharp, dry and a nice blend of citrus and pine. There's very little notice of alcohol, at least in this seven percent version. Although just about perfectly carbonated and with a head that mostly sustains, there's virtually no glass lacing. This is one of the better efforts from this brewery. Maybe there's been some tweaking of the recipe and that's been for the better. This is one that should get unretired on occasion.

Poured a crimson read, pretty appearance, 1/2" off white head on it with above average retention. Aroma yielded cascade, maybe nugget hop aroma, bitter grapefruit stylings. Bready.

Taste did some good things, good cascade like hop grapefruit bitterness, absorbed alcohol well, wasn't overly peaty or too red in its malt range.

A little expensive, no reason to drop $10 on a bottle ever again. Would rather get a 6 pack of nugget nectar.

Picked this up for 4 bucks and I suppose its worth it for the ABV.

A - Cloudy and hazy with tons of floaties another beer drank "too old" probably due to the price. Head is a nice 1/2 inch of head that pulls back to an exceptional lace ring.
S - Floral hops mostly citrus in nature but it's very faint.
T - Wow what a great red ale. Smooth hop presence mostly sweet and floral with a good malt balance sweet finish.
M - Hard to believe it's 9% I would assume around 7 like nugget nectar. Tasty.

Overall for sure will have to find this fresh seeing this old batch tastes so good.

Poured into a narrow pint glass: color is amber (scarlet) a little dense, nice looking head with mainly fine bubbles that is light tan; head laces the glass very well.

Smell is hop forward: nice citrusy hop aroma with caramel malt and toast, light toffee, also some sweet/fruity yeast byproducts. Great, enticing smell.

Taste is also hop forward, great citrus and earthy hop balance, touch of pine/resin like flavor, then transitions to the sweeter caramel/toast/toffee/plum like flavors. Hard to believe this clocks in at 9.0% abv with the great balance of flavors and low alcohol heat.

Mouthfeel is bitter, nice carbonated, balanced through out the mouth at first and then a very dry finish on the tongue.

Overall, this is an exceptional beer, nice hearty malt backbone with a lean towards some caramel and toffee like flavors; nice assertive fermentation leads to solid strength and pleasant fruity flavors.

Strong bitterness smacks of an IPA. Nice rich copper color with tan foamy head, plenty of sticky lacing. Bitterness sticks to the palate long after you’ve finished swallowing. Rewarding drink....
